It is an end of an era for Hope-Zion as its ER shuts down, Maggie gets to emotionally involved with a patient that doesn’t end well, Charlie gets a new job and Alex gets a visitor from family.

Zach, Cassie and Dev

Joe Dinical as Thomas Lefering

Thomas is preparing to close the ER to turn into an urgent care facility at day’s end. Dev isn’t happy at the news and gets on Cassie’s case for getting cozy with Thomas.

One of the ER’s last patients is, a naked man, who calls himself Nude Dude. Nude Dude is a frequent customer with the police and he got beat up while he was being processed. Zach convinces him to put on a gown while he stitches him up. Zach notices a bite mark on Nude Dude’s knee and we find out he has lyme disease. Throughout, we see ER equipment being taken away with Dev trying to stop them. Zach seems resign to the ER becoming an urgent care facility but Nude Dude tries to get Zach to fight the closure. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work and the ER is shut down. Thomas tells Cassie that it is for the best because the hospital will save a lot of money which can then be used to save lives elsewhere.

One of Zach’s final acts as ER chief is to let Nude Dude go in all his naked glory with the meds he needs to treat his lyme disease. Zach also quits his job but we see in the previews for next week that he is still with Hope Zion.

Maggie

Rebecca Liddiard as Bree, Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin

Bree seems to be doing well and Maggie is with her ladies of their study finding out their progress. The ladies thank Maggie for being their champion. Alex arrives with test results of the ladies. For most ladies, the drugs are working but for Bree her spots have grown. Bree is upset at this news but then hunches over in pain. Bree has a bowel obstruction that Alex wants to remove surgically but Maggie wants to do a non-invasive procedure so Bree can still be on the clinical trial. The two are forced to go to Charlie who was voluntold by Thomas that he is the new Chief of Surgery. Charlie hears both arguments but sides with Maggie.

Alex asks if Charlie’s decision was personal but he says he made a medical decision and if she wants to do the surgery she should just do it.

It ends up that Bree does need the surgery or she would get sepsis. However, Maggie says gave Bree her next dose of blood thinners because she thought there was no surgery.

Later, Alex asks Maggie to make sure that Bree can handle the surgery despite being given blood thinners. Maggie assures Alex and also comforts Bree and says the two will go to that Kelly Clarkson concert. During the surgery, Bree starts to bleed out. The two stop the bleeding. During the surgery, Maggie blames herself for getting too involved and wishes she were like Alex during surgery, a doctor robot but she disagrees. Unfortunately, Bree ends up in a coma. We see Maggie sit by Bree’s bedside hoping for the best for the young lady.

Charlie

His patient is Peter Stone, a man that keeps everyone laughing as he tells bad jokes, Peter has a broken elbow that needs surgery. During the surgery, Peter’s spirit appears telling jokes. Charlie tries to ignore him but when he starts repeating jokes, he thinks he knows what the issue is.

Charlie learns from Mrs. Stone that Peter woke up one morning about three weeks ago cracking jokes. Before hand the two lost their son 8 years ago. Charlie calls in Shahir to let them to know Peter has an aneurysm that requires surgery or he will die. Peter doesn’t want to as he doesn’t want to lose his humor especially when his improv troupe has a show coming up. But his wife begs him to as she doesn’t want to lose him too.

Peter does have the surgery and his spirit tells Charlie about how it was all gloomy until the levity came. Peter feels the levity slipping but Charlie says he doesn’t have to let it happen. Charlie gets Peter to say a joke but as he starts to say one, his spirit disappears. We don’t know the fate of Peter and if his humour disappeared or not.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Later, we see Charlie moving into Dawn’s office and Thomas is pleased that he has accepted the Chief of Surgery position. Charlie said he had forgotten that he enjoyed seeing the bigger picture of medicine when he had the job and he also took the job to watch over Thomas.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Kristin Lehman

Charlie then goes to a bar to meet up with an old friend from college (Kristin Lehman). We don’t know her name but it is clear the two have history. The woman cracks a joke that gets Charlie to smile and we see the two later at her place making out and possibly leading to something more.

Alex

Jarod Joseph as Manny Palmer and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Alex is on a date with Manny and it looks like things might be progressing to an overnight stay when Alex gets alerted to her condo alarm going off. The two go to investigate and it is her mom Martha. Martha is there packing Charlie’s stuff so Alex can start over and is all innuendo around Manny. Their date is cut short but the two are all flirty the next morning at work. Smallville side note: How funny that Alex’s mother is called Martha when on Smallville, Lois’ mother figure/mother-in-law is also called Martha.

Next morning, Alex is reluctant to let her mom take Luke for the day. Martha assures her daughter that she has been clean and sober for two years. However, Martha ends up in the ER because she slipped and fell and dropped Luke. Shahis treats Luke and he is fine. Martha begs Shahir not to tell Alex or she would think that she was drunk when she dropped Luke. Shahir agrees as long as Martha brings Luke back if he starts to vomit.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid, Jennifer Dale and Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza

However, later Martha is seen wandering the halls of Hope-Zion speaking incoherently talking about her son Luke. Shahir sees her speaking nonsense but Alex sees her too and thinks she is drunk again. Shahir tries to tell Alex that he believes it is something else and Alex believes her when Martha collapses.

Shahir tells Alex that he needs to keep Martha overnight for testing to find out why she collapsed and why she has memory loss.

Jennifer Dale as Martha Reid and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Later that night, Alex sits by her mom’s bedside. Martha wants Alex to go home and rest. We then see the two look at Pinterest boards for decorating ideas.

Later on, Manny drops by with Thai food (a joke from their date the night before). Alex talks about her day and Manny is their as an ear. Their is clear chemistry between the two. Alex calls it a night, Manny kisses her on the forehead and leaves.

So we see that Charlie has hooked up with an old college girlfriend that we see is sticking around for the next episode as she is investigating Maggie and Alex for what happened to Bree.

CTV has released a synopsis and images for Saving Hope’s 7th episode entitled “Gutted”. Remember in the last episode that Alex and Maggie’s surgery resulted in Bree falling into a coma? Well in the next episode we learn there were consequences to it that involves Kristin Lehman’s character. We also saw Zach quit Hope-Zion but from the images and description, we see he is still in the ER turned urgent care facility and having to deal with a real emergency.

Here is the synopsis for “Gutted” that will air Sunday April 23, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT:

Following surgical complications with their cancer study patient, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) and Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) find themselves dealing with a tough, no-nonsense lawyer. Meanwhile, Dr. Zach Miller’s (Benjamin Ayres) emergency room has finally transitioned into an urgent care facility, with all serious trauma injuries being rerouted to other hospitals. But when a car crashes into the ambulance bay, Zach and his trauma team are ill-equipped to treat a man who’s been pinned between the car and a wall.

No ER means big problems at Hope Zion. Also in trouble is Maggie and Alex for performing surgery on Bree and bad news awaits Alex’s mom.

Zach, Dawn, Cassie and Thomas

Dana comes in for her shift wondering why did she bother re-certifying herself to be a trauma surgeon if there is no ER at Hope Zion.

It is Zach’s last day and he is just finishing up some paper work and then will pack up his things and leave.

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams

Hope Zion is now a urgent care facility and Thomas is showing it off to the board and introduces Cassie as the future Chief Surgical Resident. When a man comes in with chest pain, Thomas turns him away as Hope Zion isn’t an ER anymore. Of course this turns into bad news as the man later on runs his car in the ambulance bay pining Martin, an aspiring musician, who came to visit his drummer who had a drumstick impale his eye. Thomas calls an ambulance but things turn dire for Martin. Martin calls his mom to say how sorry he is of being a disappointment but then falls unconscious. Thomas promises his mom that they will save him. Cassie tells Thomas that he shouldn’t have done that. Martin is then rushed to the OR despite protests from Thomas.

In OR, Dawn blames Thomas through Cassie at why Martin is in dire condition and won’t let Cassie perform any surgeries on him. However, Dana convinces Dawn to let Cassie work on Martin. In the end, Martin ends up being okay and is paid a visit from his drummer.

Meanwhile, before the car rammed into the former ER, Zach was seeing Eli King, a First Nations man complaining of sweaty feet and light headedness. When Eli complains to Thomas how he is not feeling well, he assumes he is drunk and tells Eli to sleep it off. However, when Zach notices Eli’s shoes, he goes to his cubicle and seems him crumpled to the floor. Unfortunately, there is nothing Zach can do and Eli dies. Zach places the blame on Thomas for ignoring Eli because he put a stereotype on him. Eli was an insulin dependent diabetic and he was suffering from keto acidosis. Thomas blames himself too and knows that Eli’s death will be his legacy at Hope Zion. Thomas puts it on himself to tell Eli’s widow how breaks down in his arms.

As Dawn and Zach are packing away his stuff, Zach didn’t want to end his last day at Hope Zion with losing a patient. Dawn tells Zach that maybe it doesn’t have to be his last day that they should bring what happened in the former ER to the board. Zach can’t believe that Dawn would do that for him and tells her that he loves her. Dawn looks surprised to hear this but we don’t hear her say it back. This might be the first time I Love You’s were said between the two.

Charlie, Maggie, and Alex

Kristin Lehman

We learn that the woman that Charlie spent the night with is Rachel Carter, the lawyer who ended up taking the case representing Violet’s complaint against Alex and Maggie that could jeopardize their medical license. Violet blames Alex and Maggie for putting Bree in a coma.

Charlie is questioned first about approving the surgery and his personal relationship with Alex. Charlie thinks there is conflict of interest considering he and Rachel slept together but Rachel disagrees.

Bree’s spirit visits Charlie and she is pissed to see Violet putting everyone through this and tells him that Maggie has been the only one in her corner. Charlie tells Bree that this will all end if she just wakes up.

Later, Maggie is questioned and Rachel asks about her letting Bree stay overnight in the on-call room. Maggie says she only did that because Bree wasn’t feeling well after one of her chemo sessions and there were no beds available. This makes Maggie look bad and that she overstepped her bounds. Maggie admits to Charlie and the hospital lawyer that she may have but it was the right thing to do.

Maggie then tells Charlie that he didn’t get the full picture about Bree and that she did give her blood thinners.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Erica Durance as Charlie Harris

Alex is questioned next and Rachel wonders about her state of mind considering that day Luke and her mom were brought to the ER. Alex says that it had no impact on the surgery and that everything that occurred she would do again.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Rebecca Liddiard as Bree Hannigan

Bree is watching the proceedings and wants Charlie to stop all of the hard questioning. Charlie then follows Bree’s spirit to her body. Charlie learns that Bree is still in a coma because she fears being alone. Charlie tells Bree that she is a strong woman and she can handle being on her own. This gives Bree confidence to leave the spirit world and wakes up.

Maggie interrupts the questioning to tell Alex, Rachel and Violet the good news. Violet goes to see Bree in hopes of getting Bree back. However, Bree rejects Violet and then thanks Maggie for being there for her.

Alex and Martha

Sahir tells Alex the bad news. Martha has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This means in 4-5 months time, Martha will be on a respiratory. Shahir did tell Martha the news but when Alex tries to broach her diagnosis to her mom, she seems more interested in playing with Luke. Shahir and Alex thinks that the disease has progressed because they believe she forgot the news. However, Martha didn’t forget but rather not think about it. Martha mentions wanting to see her son Luke. But Alex has to remind Martha that LUke is her son and she named him after her brother. Martha understands that and says that when she dies, she will see Luke again. Later, Martha tries to leave Hope Zion and refuses to listen to Alex. However, after seeing Alex spring into action to save her hospital roommate, this seems to get Martha to stay.

After the events of Alex’s day are however, she tells Charlie about her mom’s diagnosis and is taking a few days off to spend with her. Charlie agrees to watch over Luke. Alex then pays her mom a visit and suggests the two take a trip together just the two of them. Meanwhile, Manny goes to Alex’s office for their mini-golf date but finds she isn’t there. Manny seems to understand and walks away.

Back at Alex’s apartment, Martha is packing for their trip that seems to involve being in the sun. Alex is in the washroom crying and we see why: she is pregnant! So they did decide to write in Erica Durance’s second pregnancy.

This time, I have to believe that this time it is Charlie’s because I don’t think she slept with Manny yet. We just have to wait and see if we get another who is the dad story line again.

There is nary a mention or photos of Erica Durance for this week’s Saving Hope but maybe because Alex is taking time off to be with her mom. So we can assume that Alex’s latest baby drama won’t get addressed for a couple of weeks. But that doesn’t mean the show is slowing down with the medical drama.

Here is CTV’s synopsis for “Knowing Me, Knowing You”:

Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) and Dr. Manny Palmer (Jarod Joseph, ONCE UPON A TIME) treat two love birds who have an annual weekend-long love fest, despite the fact the woman is married to someone else. Meanwhile, when Charlie assigns Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) to evaluate the interns, it brings out her nurturing side and leads Dr. Billy Scott (Greg Calderone, HEROES REBORN) to ask Maggie to be his mentor. Following Dr. Zach Miller’s (Benjamin Ayres) advice to use the “kill them with kindness” approach to negotiating, Dr. Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden) struggles to bring out her nurturing side when she tries to get her Chief of Surgery position back. Maggie and Dawn find themselves at odds when they work together to treat a single dad with a ninja star lodged in his neck.

“Knowing Me, Knowing You” Saving Hope’s eight episode of season 5 airs Sunday April 30, 2017 on CTV at 10pm ET/PT.

It is our first ever Alex-free episode of Saving Hope. Kind of reminds me of the days when Erica Durance was not in an episode of Smallville. However, with the way Alex has been behaving this season, can’t say I missed her at all whereas anytime Lois wasn’t in an episode of Smallville I missed her.

But this week we see fallout over last week’s episode and also Manny catching on of Charlie’s gift. First we get some comic relief with Shahir and his partner Jonathan (Christopher Jacot).

Shahir

Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza and Christopher Jacot

Luke is running a fever and is pulled from daycare. Shahir and his partner Jonathan are watching over him while Charlie is at work. It seems that Jonathan quit his finance job to follow his dream of selling homemade healthy cookies. Jonathan as a meeting with the Hope Zion’s head of food and beverage in hopes of the hospital buying some of his cookies. Dawn buys a dozen samples (at a cost of $96 total!!!!) and in exchange Shahir has to write a letter of recommendation for her when she applies for Chief of Surgery (more on that later).

However, we see Shahir switch Jonathan’s cookies for store bought. When Jonathan returns from his meeting, he said it went well. Later that night though, Jonathan knew that Shahir switched his cookies. This forces Shahir to admit that Jonathan’s cookies were awful. Jonathan appreciates Shahir lying to him to protect his feelings but they need to be honest with each other. Shahir then admits that he wants to be a father with Jonathan.

Hope Zion: Who Will Be the Next Chief Resident

With Maggie’s cancer study moved to Mississauga General, she is looking for something to do. Charlie suggests Maggie help Dawn evaluate potential candidates for Chief Resident. Charlie believes their different styles will help determine the right candidate.

Meanwhile, Dawn wants her Chief of Surgery job back. Dawn thinks she has her job back when she learns that Thomas has resigned as CEO of Hope Zion but did ask the board to give Dawn’s job back. Unfortunately, the board tells Dawn that Charlie will remain interim chief and the job will be psoted shortly and Dawn is welcome to apply. Zach encourages Dawn to be nice to her colleagues so they will give her letters of recommendation.

In the doctor’s lounge, Maggie lets Cassie, Dev and Billy know that the three of them are in the running for Chief Resident. Cassie is pissed because Thomas said the job is hers. Maggie says that is no longer the case now that Thomas is gone as the CEO.

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams and Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin

Their next case comes in and it is a father who has a ninja throwing star in his throat. The man’s son, Samuel, comes in and we learn that it is just the two of them as the mother recently died. It seems that Samuel’s dad was taking them on a lot of adventures that included throwing some ninja stars. Because of there the ninja star was in this throat it requires surgery. Dawn observes the surgery and sees Billy struggle to come up with any answers while Dev and Cassie knows what to do. During the surgery, things are stable until Billy removes the star thinking that Maggie give the okay. Luckily, Cassie, Dev and Maggie save Samuel’s dad.

Throughout the episode, Billy comes across as an arrogant asshole. However, Billy is really good with Samuel but the experience leaves him humble. Billy asks Maggie to be his mentor but asks in an arrogant way. When Billy gets honest and says he still has lots to learn and likes Maggie’s style that will help become as good as Dev and Cassie.

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Cassie is still fuming over having to compete for a job she thought was hers so she goes to Dawn to voice her displeasure. Dawn tells Cassie that she has to work as hard as Dev and Billy because she is a woman and has to prove herself. Dawn tells Cassie that it is an unfortunate fact of life but admits that she does deserve to be Chief Resident.

Later, Cassie wishes Thomas well and he hopes he didn’t make life difficult for her now that he he is going. The two share a kiss and this is probably the last time we will see Thomas since the actor, Joe Dinicol moved on to be on Arrow as Ragman.

Charlie

Charlie is called in to consult on Mario (not his real name) who fell and damaged his hand on a glass coffee table in a hotel. Dana was the initial plastics consult and she encounters Mario being amorous with a woman who he knows as Claudia. Dana assumes they are newlyweds the way they are all over each other but apparently they are not but a couple who meets only once a year.

Wendy Crewson as Dana Kinney

When Charlie examines Mario’s hand, we learn that he and Claudia met at a conference three years ago and immediately hit it off and started an affair that only happens at this conference. But Mario fell in love with Claudia. Claudia comes in overhearing the conversation and wonders why Mario never said anything. Charlie goes to leave the two alone but quickly realizes that he actually saw spirit Claudia when Mario thought Charlie was abandoning him.

Charlie goes to talk to Claudia and we see blood near her mouth. Charlie asks where Claudia came from and runs in that direction. Manny sees Charlie rush to the elevator where we see Claudia collapsed on the floor bleeding from her mouth.

Manny rushes her to the IR and the bleed is only stopped because of the scope down her neck. Manny, Dawn and Dana are trying to figure out where the bleeding is coming from and what caused it. Dana remembers that Claudia was choking in the hotel room that caused Mario to fall. Charlie learns from Claudia that they had eaten before hand and he realizes that she choked on a fish bone. Manny wonders how Charlie knows that and is he sure. Charlie assures that he is 100% sure. The team rushes to the OR before the fish bone can rupture her aorta. Charlie goes to get a full medical history on Claudia.

Mario is no help but Claudia’s husband Derek is. We learn that Claudia’s real name is Claudine and we see that Derek is a great guy. Charlie also learns that Claudine has asthma that helps Manny, Dana and Dawn during the surgery. While the three are performing on Claudine, she and Charlie talk about how being Claudia makes her feel freer. Also, being with Mario is different than Derek as he surprises her whereas her husband no longer. Charlie encourages Claudine talk to her husband to save their marriage. Manny observes Charlie talking to himself and calls him a nutjob in front of Dana and Dawn.

Claudine ends up being okay and has that talk with her husband. Mario gives Charlie his real name and number to give to Claudine in case she wants him in her life.

In the hospital chapel, Charlie and Manny have a talk. Manny asks Charlie how he knew what he knew about Claudine. Charlie answers he happened to be at the elevator when Claudine was found and he knows all about bones. Then Manny asks if Charlie heard from Alex as he has heard nothing. Charlie tells Manny that Alex is probably at her family’s farm wearing her dad’s old sweater. Manny assumes that Charlie heard from Alex but he says he hasn’t but just knows her.

When Charlie returns to Alex, he brings home some dinner as thanks for Shahir and Jonathan for taking care of Luke. Charlie goes to throw out a napkin when he sees the positive pregnancy test.

Next week, it looks like a full hour with Alex as she takes care of her mom and comes to grips with her illness. And at last, it looks like her mom might get Alex to smarten up and go back to Charlie. We will see if this comes true.

Familiar faces return to Saving Hope as we reach the halfway point of its final season. And it might be possible that we get the long awaited reunion of Alex and Charlie based on the images released by CTV (fingers crossed). Also, I feel like plenty tissues need to be on hand for this one. Here is the synopsis:

An unidentified man arrives at the hospital with critical injuries after being struck by a subway train, and the Hope Zion doctors rally together to try to save his life. Dr. Charlie Harris’ (Michael Shanks) personal medical struggle is overshadowed by a spiritual one when he discovers the John Doe is “The Great” Randal Crane (Peter Keleghan, MURDOCH MYSTERIES). In spirit form, Randal delivers a dire warning about Charlie’s gift and its heavy cost if he doesn’t rid himself of it. Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) attempts to leave her past behind her, but it proves impossible when Dr. Sydney Katz (Stacey Farber, DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION) comes back to town, urging Maggie to put her pregnant sister in the now-defunct cancer study. Away from the hospital in the wake of her mother Martha’s (Jennifer Dale, WHAT WOULD SAL DO?) diagnosis, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) takes Martha to visit their family farm.

“All Our Yesterdays” airs Sunday May 7, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT.

Saving Hope Season 5 “All Our Yesterdays” Recap

It was an emotional Saving Hope as we say goodbye to one character while a fan favourite returns.

But before we get to that, let’s see what’s up with Cassie. It seems from the last episode that Cassie has been named the interim Chief Resident. However, Cassie seems to having some self-doubt especially when friends now turned staff aren’t listening or respecting her, especially Dev. Charlie eventually gives Cassie the job on a more permanent basis which gives Cassie the confidence in doing the job.

Dev

Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller and Dejan Loyola as Dev Sekera

It seems that not only does Dev have an issue with taking orders from Cassie but he is now dating nurse Serena, the same nurse that Zach dated shortly after Joel’s death. Dev’s medical case is Wilfred who has drunken himself into an alcohol induced hearth condition.Wilfred’s drinking was brought on by the death of his wife. Wilfred’s case seems to have inspired Dev to talk sense to his patient and also learn to enjoy Serena’s partying lifestyle.

Maggie

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Stacey Farber, as Syndey Katz

Maggie is surprised to learn that the sister of her patient is Sydney Katz. Sydney insisted her sister Becca see Maggie because of her cancer study. Becca is 14 weeks pregnant but also has ovarian cancer. Despite helping her sister get treatment, it still looks like Sydney’s parents have not accepted her after coming out. Even though the cancer study has moved to another hospital, Maggie still agrees to work on treating Becca. During the surgery, Maggie sees that lesions are everywhere making it difficult to remove the tumor and try and save mother and child. However, Maggie pushes through and works on removing the tumour. Maggie removes the ovaries and it looks like Becca is in the clear and will put her back on chemo that won’t harm the baby and wait till the baby is viable. Later, Maggie asks Sydney out for dinner to catch up. Before Sydney accepts, she tells Maggie that while she was in Israel, she thought about her everyday and kisses her. Sydney hopes that she and Maggie can be something more to each other and hopes she feels the same way.

Manny

It looks like Jared Joseph’s time on Saving Hope has come to an end. Dana spies Manny looking at his phone and he confesses he got a job offer from his old hospital in Detroit. Manny is hesitant to accept as he really wants to make a go of a potential relationship with Alex. However, Manny realizes the failure of them not able to connect while Alex is away is a sign that they weren’t meant to be. So it seems like Manny has taken the job in Detroit and is off the show.

Charlie

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Peter Keleghan as the Great Randal

A John Doe has arrived and is in really bad condition after being hit by a subway train. The man had a journal on him and it is filled with drawings and names written all over it. One of those names is Charlie Harris and his name appears multiple times. Another name that appears that is Randall as in the Great Randall from season 1. Charlie knows for a fact the John Doe is Randall after his spirit appears before him. Randall tells Charlie that he got overwhelmed with seeing spirits again that it go too much for him and that he put himself in front of a train. Randall tells Charlie that this will happen to him eventually. In fact there is one spirit, Blake, that won’t leave Charlie alone. Randall tells Charlie that one way to make his gift manageable is something tethering him to life or the world of the living. I think Randall is suggesting that Charlie have someone to share his gift with. Eventually, Randall’s injuries prove too much and he dies and his spirit disappears.

Alex

Jennifer Dale as Martha Reid and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Alex and Martha are at their family farm. Martha is busy cleaning it and isn’t interested in reading the palliative care facilities. Martha drops two bombs on her daughter: 1) she is selling the family farm and a realtor is coming over soon to look at the property and 2) Martha wants her daughter to help her die.

Before Alex has a chance to talk about bomb number two, the realtor comes over and he ends up being a high school classmate of Alex’s. After touring the property, Martha asks Nick to be their realtor and toast to the agreement. Martha then starts to have problems with her balance and memory. Nick leaves and Alex brings Martha inside. Mother and daughter have their talk. Martha asks why Alex named her son Luke and she said it was to remember him. Then over a puzzle Alex doesn’t want to be the one the end her mom’s life. Alex says that she may be a doctor but she is also Martha’s daughter. Alex asks her mom to think about Doug and Jasper, her other sons. Martha is not concerned considering they haven’t visited her for 10 years and leaves to go to her room. We see Martha take out a pill bottle and it looks like she is about the down the pills when Alex goes to her door to confess she is pregnant.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Outside, looking over their horses, Alex admits the baby is Charlie’s and admits they can’t be together. Martha admits she always thought the bad luck that befell their family was because of her and hope it ended with Alex. Alex tells her mom that no such luck that it has continued on with her and Charlie. Martha thinks that is nonsense and Alex should return to Charlie. Later on, Alex agrees to help end her mom’s life but when she enters her mom’s room, she finds that she overdosed on the pills. Despite trying to save her life, Martha has passed away.

The police gives Alex an envelope and she sees it is family photos and behind one is a message from her mom.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Alex returns home to her condo and finds Charlie there. Alex simply asks if “she” is there. Charlie nods yes and Alex asks Charlie to tell her that she loves her. Charlie tells Alex that she knows and we pull back to see Martha’s spirit behind him. Tears fall on Alex and Charlie and the audience as the two hug.

It looks like Alex and Charlie are maybe back together from the previews for the next episode. And the next episode won’t be until June 8 on a new night and time.

Saving Hope Season 5 “Change of Heart” Recap

$

0

We have only 8 episode’s left of Saving Hope’s final season and it looks like the show is setting things up to give our characters a happy ending. While we see happiness on the horizon for our characters, “Change of Heart” was an episode that got the tear-ducts flowing with Alex’s medical case and planning her mother’s memorial.

Cassie

To balance the emotional stories in the episode, we get a bit of comic relief in Cassie. In fact, I think Cassie is the comic relief character this season. In this episode, Cassie seems very pleased with herself with the schedule she has devised for her residents. However, all that planning goes down the windows as the surgeons decide to switch residents with each other throwing Cassie’s careful planning out the window.

Alex and Charlie

Alex is planning her mom’s funeral but things hit a snag when her mom’s urn doesn’t arrive in time to place her ashes. Alex is then called in for an emergency and tasks Maggie to hold on to her mom’s ashes while she is away (more on that adventure in “Maggie and Sydney”).

Meanwhile, Alex has tasked Charlie to go and bring her older brother Dougie (Ben Bass) to the memorial. Charlie brings Shahir on this road trip for help as Alex believes Dougie would refuse to come to the memorial. While on the road, Shahir wonders Charlie performing this favour means that he and Alex are back together. Charlie lets Shahir down that he and Alex aren’t back together and he was only asked to bring Dougie in is because he knows how he can be.

Alex and Shahir find Dougie passed out drunk on a couch in front of his home but do manage to get him to go to the memorial. When Dougie and Alex meet, they get into a fight with Dougie blaming Alex for letting their mom die.

In terms of the medical case of the week it is the Avery family. 13-year old Erin has been brought into the ER after collapsing. Erin has a kidney disease and requires a transplant. Erin’s younger sister, Vicky is a match. Alex realizes that Vicky is a saviour sibling meaning she was conceived to save Erin’s life. Alex is placed in an ethical dilemma and refuses to do the surgery until Vicky speaks to the ethical professional. After speaking to this person, Alex determines that Vicky does want to save her sister and starts to prep for the surgery. However, all is not well with Vicky as we saw earlier she has a runny nose. When Alex goes to find Vicky, she finds her collapsed in the washroom burning up and vomiting.

The doctors of Hope Zion discovers that Vicky has caught a virus that has led to heart disease. Dawn tells the family that they can place an LVAD around Vicky’s heart but it is only a temporary measure and eventually she will need a heart transplant.

During Vicky’s surgery, Charlie sees her spirit in the halls of Hope-Zion looking for Erin. Unfortunately, Erin is being wheeled into surgery herself because she has suffered a stroke.

Charlie lets Alex know that he is talking to Vicky’s spirit and she knows that is not good news. Alex needs Charlie to convince Vicky to go back to her body.

Bad news though is Erin’s spirit arrives and the two sisters are so happy to be reunited and feeling great for the first time in a long time. The two girls are having fun in an elevator while Charlie is trying to convince the two girls to fight for their lives.

Unfortunately, Shahir was unable to fix Erin and she becomes brain dead. Charlie manages to get Erin to convince Vicky to fight so she can do the things they were supposed to do together. It was an emotional scene and I am not doing it justice but I was bawling my eyes out.

Over at Vicky’s surgery, her LVAD is not working and Dawn is at a loss as to why. Alex sees Charlie talking to Vicky and goes to find out what is going on. Charlie lets Alex know that Erin didn’t make it and says that the two sisters don’t want to be apart. Both realize the way the sisters can be together is if Vicky receives Erin’s heart. The heart transplant occurs and we see Mr. and Mrs. Avery say good bye to Erin and then by Vicky’s side as Erin’s heart beats strongly in her chest. More tears flowing here.

Maggie and Sydney

So Maggie was tasked to babysit Martha’s ashes which are in a child’s shoebox. This being Maggie, she loses the ashes and she is forced to ask Sydney for help.

You see Maggie has been avoiding Sydney since her confession of love. Sydney is back at Hope-Zion and wants to know why Maggie has been avoiding her. Which brings us back to the ashes, Sydney does help with the hunt while Maggie is off at a consult.

Maggie’s patient is Olivia who is complaining that it burns when she pees. Maggie discovers that Olivia has chlamydia and suggests that her fiancee, Jesse, get tested too. Olivia tells Maggie that Jesse doesn’t have to be tested as they have not slept together yet. Olivia and Jesse met online and became friends then realized they were in love. But Jesse has been in jail for illegal reptile. smuggling and only recently go out. Before Jesse got out of prison, Olivia had a one night stand.

Meanwhile, Sydney is having no luck with finding the ashes but gets involved in Maggie’s case as she is concerned the chlamydia might make her infertile. The two examine Olivia and sees that there is something wrong but a minor procedure will fix that. Olivia then comes clean to Jesse about the one night stand and he leaves but he does come back and the two reconcile.

Maggie finally tells the truth to Sydney and how she needs to time to process her confession of love.

Remembering Martha

After all of the emotions of the day, Alex gets more bad news in the venue for her mom’s memorial has been double booked. Dougie comes back and tells Alex that he isn’t mad at her but mad at himself for not reconciling with their mom thinking he had more time to do so. Dougie then tells Alex to let him find another venue for their mom’s memorial.

Dougie does pull through and it is a camp-out memorial that Alex thinks is perfect for their mom.

Luckily, Sydney does find the ashes and Maggie gets the urn so Alex can lay her mom to rest.

Before the memorial service, Maggie pulls Sydney aside and tells her that she is afraid that a relationship won’t live up to the hype she built in her head. However, Maggie is ready to have a relationship with Sydney. The two ladies finally get together and seal their love with a kiss.

Also, Shahir lets Jonathan know about his fears over adopting a child but it looks like the two are still going ahead with their plan.

As the memorial continues on, Alex wants Dougie to be back in her life and to meet Luke. Alex wants Dougie to be around and be the uncle her kids can turn to. Dougie notices the plurals and Alex admits to her brother and everyone that she and Charlie are having another child. To me this news seems to have taken Charlie by surprise but to Alex it seems like she already told him.

To lay their mom to rest, Alex and Dougie set their mom’s urn on a raft and sets it on fire as it drifts away on a lake. Fireworks are then set off and Alex reaches for Charlie’s hand and the two hold hands seemingly getting back together.

Are you happy that Charlie and Alex are back together? Happy that Maggie and Sydney are back together too?

Do you think we are going to get happy endings for all of our characters?

CTV released a slew of photos for the 11th episode of Saving Hope but no synopsis. From the promos though it looks like Charlie’s gift is reaching a boiling point that concerns Alex. And from the images it looks like the others at Hope Zion is dealing with a violent patient. We will update this post once we get an episode description but in the meantime, enjoy the plethora of photos.

[UPDATE]: Thanks to TV, eh? (and Moon for letting me know) for providing us with the following synopsis that apparently is from CTV:

Following a car accident involving three brothers, in which only one survives, Dr. Charlie Harris is faced with two spirits who beg him to do everything he can save to their brother’s life. As Charlie and the team operate, he’s haunted by a mischievous ghost (Steve Arbuckle), who is determined to move on from the spirit world. Meanwhile, Dr. Sydney Katz and Dr. Shahir Hamza treat Trudy Stein (Teresa Pavlinek), a 40-year-old free spirit who impregnated herself and arrives at Hope Zion after suffering a fall. Meanwhile, Dr. Zach Miller and Dr. Maggie Lin deal with a mysterious man who comes into the E.R. covered in blood that is not his, and he doesn’t know how it got there.

Saving Hope Season 5 “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” Recap

This particular episode of Saving Hope was a bit more supernatural that it has ever been before with the spirit of the week. Before we get to the rest of that, let’s find out what happened elsewhere with our doctors at Hope Zion

Shahir

Shahir is feeling overwhelmed at filling out the numerous forms required for adoption that he yells at Jonathan for disclosing a high school arrest. Jonathan can’t handle Shahir when he gets that way and calls him weird. This does not go well with Shahir and he shuts down. Later after his experience with Sydney’s patient, he opens up to Jonathan about how he wonders if is parents would have chosen him if they knew about his Asperger’s. Jonathan counters that all babies are special and deserve to brought up in a loving home. This brings back Shahir’s resolve to adopt a child.

The Hope Zion ER

Zach gets Dev and Billy to deal with a small framed man, named Bart, who has come into the ER with blood all over him. Billy realizes that the blood isn’t Bart’s. Dev, Zach and Billy are trying to figure what happened to Bart and whose blood is on him. Maggie has that answer and it is Bart’s roomate, a beefy body builder by the name of Niles. It seems that when Niles came home for lunch, he woke up Bart and ended up breaking his nose. Zach calls in the police to deal with the domestic dispute

Later on, Bart is asleep in one of the ER beds when Billy wakes him up but when he does, Bart puts him in a choke hold. However, Bart is still asleep and Maggie and Zach figure out that he has a REM sleep disorder. To get Bart to wake up peacefully, Zach orders Dev to tranquilize him before security arrives. Luckily for Dev, Jackson comes along with a taser gun to put down Bart.

Maggie and Zach let Bart know about his sleep disorder and ask if there is anyone that can help out. Bart says there isn’t anyone but Niles comes in to say he can help citing how hard it is to find an apartment in Toronto as a reason to stay.

Maggie and Sydney

Just when it looks like these two might be in it for a long haul, it is thrown in doubt with Sydney receives a job offer from Torben Hospital in London, a job she applied for a year ago. However, Sydney doesn’t disclose this to Maggie just yet.

Speaking of Maggie, Zach notices how sleepy she is which she attributes to the small bed she has been sharing with Sydney. Zach makes fun of Maggie on how she is living with Sydney, which she denies.

While all the fun that Maggie is having in the ER, Sydney is helping her patient Trudy, a middle-aged pregnant woman who fell during the Zombie Walk. In terms of the pregnancy, everything checks out but when Trudy goes to sign her discharge papers, she can’t. Shahir determines that she hit her head when she fell and now has a hematoma and the pressure needs to be relieved.

During the surgery, there is an issue with the bone bank meaning that the bone flap that Shahir has removed needs to be placed in Trudy’s abdomen to ensure it remains viable to be put back in place at a later date. Trudy gets contractions while trying to put in the bone flap in her abdomen but luckily Sydney asks for a certain drug to be administered that gets the contractions to stop.

Seeing Shahir’s procedure has made Sydney realize that she wants to learn from the best and tells Maggie about the job offer. Maggie knew that Sydney was going to do this to her again and worries about their relationship. Sydney then asks Maggie to come with her, which she happily agrees. Maggie then suggests the two need a bigger bed.

Alex and Charlie

We open up the episode with Alex having a nightmare about a spirit taking her and Charlie’s second child, a daughter. When she wakes up, we see her and Charlie asleep on the couch after having a conversation presumably about their future. It seems that nothing was resolved from this talk.

Once at the hospital, Charlie is still being haunted by Blake, the spirit from episode 1. Blake wants Charlie to help him move on but does it in such an aggressive way that doesn’t make him willing to help. Charlie and Alex get called into the ER to deal with a car accident.

The first two brought in from accident are declared DOA but the third is clinging to life. The spirit of the two, who learn are named Kieran and Isaac, tell Charlie to save their little brother Ezra. Charlie tells Alex that the three men are brothers.

Ezra has tons of internal injuries because of the seat belt and his tibia is broken in half. In the OR, Cassie and Alex are working on repairing the internal injuries. Before Charlie goes into the OR, Blake insists on Charlie helping him. Charlie ignores him and is surprised that Blake is able to grab his arm. Once in the OR, Blake is wreaking havoc first by shoving Charlie, turning over the surgical cart and then sitting on Ezra’s chest. The last one causes Ezra to go into distress but luckily Alex and Cassie manage to save him. Charlie also manages to save Ezra’s leg despite Blake’s interference.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Sean Arbuckle as Blake

In the morgue, Blake is causing all kinds of trouble by tossing stuff at Charlie and opening and closing morgue drawers. Alex sees all of this and asks Charlie who is Blake. Charlie doesn’t know but tells Alex everything will be fine.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Meanwhile, the boys father, Mr. Towne, arrives in a drunken state. Alex learns that Kieran and Isaac left home because they couldn’t deal with a drunk father and came to get Ezra who also couldn’t deal with their dad. Mr. Towne is quite reasonable with Alex demanding to see his sons but she manages to convince him to get in a state that he will remember seeing his sons instead of waking up the next day with the realization.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams

Alex and Cassie go and clean up Kieran and Isaac but Alex gets emotional during it. These deaths and her mom’s death has overwhelmed Alex. With Kieran and Isaac all cleaned up, Mr. Towne goes to see Kieran and Isaac. At first he belittles them for their state but this was just a coping mechanism as Mr. Towne breaks down for all he has done wrong for these two.

Later, Ezra wakes up with his dad by his side. Mr. Towne vows to his son that he will do better by him.

Meanwhile, Charlie has gotten Blake’s medical file and confronts him with his findings. We learn that Blake has been to Hope Zion numerous times as a child with a lot of injuries. Of course all of these injuries were inflicted on young Blake by his parents but blamed on other things like falling down the stairs. Charlie learns that Blake isn’t willing to blame his parents for what happened to him as a child. We see Blake turn into that child. Charlie talks to young Blake and tells him nothing that happened to him was his fault. Charlie’s words get Blake to move on.

Later on, Charlie drops off dim sum to Alex and tells her about Blake. Alex worries that Blake was the most difficult spirit that Charlie had to deal with. Charlie admits that Blake could move things and touch him that had him spooked but says that everything is fine now. Alex tells Charlie about her nightmare. Charlie promises that nothing will happen to her or the kids and he has the spirit thing handled. Alex seems to accept that.

So are Alex and Charlie officially back together? And are you happy about Maggie going off to be with Sydney?

Next week’s promo has me worried about Maggie. It looks like their might be an accident and Maggie will die. I hope not as Maggie has become one of my favourite characters on this show.

From the images released by CTV for Saving Hope’s 12th episode, it doesn’t look so rosy for Maggie and Sydney. Is it possible that Maggie will stay at Hope Zion based on the episode synopsis versus going with her lady love to London?

We also get some behind the scenes shots of Jason Priestley directing and rocking a Hudson Bay Lacoste golf shirt.

Here is CTV’s synopsis for “Leap of Faith”

Dr. Alex Reid and Dr. Maggie Lin work together to deliver the baby of plastic surgeon Dr. Arnie Storms (Ari Cohen, SHOOT THE MESSENGER) and his wife. Charlie treats magician “Abbadon” (Joe Cobden, THIS LIFE), who shattered both his legs during an illusion gone wrong, and Dr. Shahir Hamza treats his idol – a virtuosic concert pianist – who has been inadvertently poisoning herself, while trying to curb symptoms of early onset Parkinson’s. Meanwhile, when Maggie is offered an obstetrician position at Hope Zion, it causes her to rethink her role at the hospital.

Saving Hope Season 5 “Leap of Faith” Recap

As we near the end of Saving Hope, we say goodbye to a fan-favourite character, I think, and there might be trouble in paradise for my favourite couple on the show, which I sincerely hope not.

Shahir

Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza

To prepare him and Jonathan for fatherhood, Shahir has downloaded a baby-caring app that replaces the old school of caring for a sack of flour or an egg. This app has been keeping Shahir up at night and questions his suitability of being a father especially with Jonathan starting a new job back on Bay Street. If you aren’t from Toronto, Bay Street is the Canadian equivalent to the US’ Wall Street.

Shahir doubts get heightened with his patient, Nellie, a famous classical pianist, whom he is a fan of.

Cassie brings Nellie to Shahir’s attention because of her complaints of headaches, lack of appetite and nausea. Nellie has come in with her daughter Poppy who is concerned for her mother.

We learn that one of the homeopathic remedies that Nellie has been taking is slowly poisoning her but she has been taking that remedy to treat the tremors associated with Parkinson’s Disease. Nellie has tried everything to lessen the symptoms and rather continue to poison herself to she can finish her opus. Shahir suggests deep brain stimulation that will help with her symptoms but there are some cognitive side effects. Nellie turns down the surgery as she needs to finish her opus. Poppy is offended that she is putting music once again ahead of her health and her, as she always has been and leaves. Nellie asks Shahir how long will she have if she goes through the surgery and Cassie answers that she will have years. Nellie thinks that would be enough time to finish her opus but Cassie counters that it gives her more time with her daughter.

Later, Nellie decides to go through the surgery and wants to know what are some of the cognitive side effect. Shahir tells Nellie that one of them is she might forget how to play the piano but it could be only temporary. Poppy thinks that is a deal breaker but Nellie says that music comes from the heart and asks her daughter to teach her how to play music again if she does forget. We later see mother and daughter duet on “Fur Elise” on the hospital’s chapel’s piano.

After the events with Nellie, Shahir doesn’t think he can be a father and tells Jonathan so who is not pleased with his change of heart and leaves in a huff. We then see Shahir listen to Nellie and Poppy play when he as to deal with his digital baby. When the baby settles, it does look like Shahir might be changing his mind about fatherhood.

Zach and Dawn

Michelle Nolden and Dawn Bell

Dawn has gotten two tickets for her and Zach to attend a Steve Martin concert. Unfortunately, it is on Zach’s bowling league night and can’t go. A frequent flyer patient at Hope Zion opens Dawn’s eyes that Zach is lying. When confronted, Zach admits that he is actually spending time with his sons. Dawn understands and wishes Zach would have been honest with her and would love to join them on their activities. However, Zach has to tell Dawn that his sons don’t like her because she isn’t their mother. This upsets Dawn and Zach tries to make her feel better but we don’t know the status of their relationship.

Charlie

Charlie day starts off with a heavy-set ghost needing his help but Charlie can’t help him because he is off to the ER for a case of a magician Abadon, getting seriously injured when performing his latest allusion.

Abadon has two broken legs but even worse is blood clots have developed where Charlie can’t do what needs to be done on his legs. Abadon’s spirit appears to him and needs Charlie to fix his legs so he can continue on to do his tricks. The heavy-set ghost is also still hanging around and Charlie gets Abadon to entertain him while he fixes him.

Afterwards, outside Charlie’s office Abadon confronts him about how things are going. Charlie tells Abadon that his legs are okay but Dawn is still working on his blood clots. All of a sudden Abadon’s speech starts to slur and Charlie tells him he is stroking out. Charlie goes back to the OR to tell Dawn that Abadon is on the cusp of having a stroke and needs to have a procedure done to stop it. Charlie asks Dawn to trust him and she says she hopes he is right. Charlie seconds that Abadon thirds it while the OR anesthesiologist fourths it to the surprise of Charlie and Abadon.

While Dawn is working on Abadon, he begs Charlie to teach how to see spirits as he really wants to see his husband again who died early on in their marriage of a brain aneurysm. Charlie wishes he could but even he doesn’t know how he got the ability.

Later on, everything is okay and Charlie visits Abadon who believes they’ve met before. After performing a card trick, Charlie tells him he is going to be fine. We later see Abadon tearfully look at a picture of him and his husband before making it magically disappear.

Maggie and Sydney with special appearance by Alex

Alex frets over losing Maggie to London when Charlie mentions an obstetrics staff position that has opened up and wonders if they should mention it to her.

Alex then attends an ultrasound of her baby where Sydney once again lets slip the gender of her baby. As in Alex’s dream, it is indeed going to be a girl.

Sydney then talks about how Maggie will be starting over again in London as she needs to re-certify. After Sydney leaves, Alex then lets Maggie know about the staff position at Hope Zion. Maggie says she will stick to her original decision to leave for London. Maggie also notices how Alex seems to be troubled too. Alex admits that she is having weird dreams and isn’t connecting with the pregnancy.

Before Maggie can process, she and Sydney have to help deliver the baby of Kim Storms, a nurse at Hope Zion and also the wife of Dr. Arnie Storms, plastic surgeon at Hope Zion, whom Dana and the rest of the staff don’t seem to like. The baby is quickly delivered, a girl who they name Alice, and everything seems okay. However, Kim has pain all over and difficulty breathing. Kim also has blood clots that Sydney and Maggie treat. Arnie is upset that no one called him and starts yelling and blaming Maggie and says he won’t give a good word about the staff position. Sydney hears this and confronts Maggie. Maggie tells Sydney she found out that day but she won’t take it. Sydney doesn’t want to be the one to prevent Maggie from landing her dream job and tells her not to come to London with her.

So Maggie goes to see Charlie and tells him she would like the position. Charlie then gives Maggie the keys to her new office.

When Alex goes to see Kim and Alice, Kim starts to experience more pain. There is more complications that can get worse because of the medication that Sydney and Maggie gave her to treat the clots. Sydney has one last hurrah at Hope Zion watching Maggie and Alex perform a procedure that saves Kim’s life and we later see her and Arnie share a moment with their newborn.

Sydney leaves Kim’s surgery early to head off to the airport. Later, we see Maggie at her new office and she tells Alex that Sydney left her a note in Hebrew. Alex clearly can see that Maggie is not happy and tells her that she has never seen her happier then when she was with Sydney. So making like Phoebe and Ross, Maggie and Alex commandeer Zach’s car to rush to the airport before Sydney leaves. Before though, the Bro TP that is Zach and Maggie have a nice good bye.

Alex races Maggie to the airport and two discuss how much they will miss their friendship. And we has viewers will too as I’ve always enjoyed their sisterhood.

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Stacey Farber as Sydney Katz

At the airport, while not quite “she got off the plane” moment, Maggie discovers that Sydney didn’t get on the plane. Sydney reads Maggie the letter which is pretty much that the person is the home. The two declare their love and Maggie promises to buy their airplane tickets.

So this seems to be the end of Julia Taylor Ross’ time on the show and I am going to miss her. Ross brought such comedy to the role and Maggie was such a hot mess at times but so glad she found true love in the end.

Outside the departures area, Alex notices Maggie’s Hope Zion staff badge on the passenger seat. Alex puts it on and speaks to her baby. Alex then asks Charlie to care for Luke so she can have a girls night out with her daughter.

It is episode 13 and that means after this episode, we have 5 episodes left and then that’s it no more Saving Hope. It looks like Canadian actor-director Don McKellar is guest starring as a psychiatrist helping Charlie and his gift.

Here is the synopsis for “Problem Child”:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) struggles to find out what’s causing the erratic behaviour of a former model student when he comes into the E.R. after hurting himself breaking into his neighbour’s house. As Alex works to determine the problem, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) speaks with the spirit version of the child to try to find out what has been causing his behavioural changes. When one of Dr. Dev Sekara’s (Dejan Loyola) childhood friends is brought into the hospital after being beaten by the police, questions arise as to who’s at fault, and if the beating was racially motivated. Meanwhile, Dr. Dawn Bell’s (Michelle Nolden) favourite heart patient becomes discouraged by the amount of time’s spent waiting for his transplant. A lottery winner, he’s given almost all of his prize money away, and with the remainder would like to open an animal sanctuary, so Dawn comes up with an idea that will allow the him to leave the hospital and do his good Samaritan work.

Saving Hope Season 5 “Problem Child” Recap

There were a lot of parallels between the medical cases and the personal lives of our doctors of Hope Zion.

Dev and Shahir

Shahir is sporting what he calls his dad look that includes a short sleeved shirt with golf shorts that show off his legs. This look was to hopefully impress the adoption agency. However, Shahir believes he blew the interview when he went into neurosurgeon mode and quoted a study on how adopted children would experience behavioural problems in their teens.

Shahir is then called into consult on a case involving a high school friend of Dev’s. Justin was brought in by Officer Bauer claiming that gang members were beating him up. Justin has a hematoma pressing against his brain. Sahir and Dev work on relieving the pressure and during the surgery we learn that Justin is a satellite kid meaning that his parents are overseas and was sent to live with a cousin who started charging rent. In order to make ends meet, Justin started selling drugs and fell into a gang.

When Justin wakes up, he and Dev catch-up and we learn that it was actually the police who beat up Justin. Justin explains he was racially profiled and that the police wouldn’t let him go so he shoved one out of the way which resulted him getting beat up. This explains to Dev why Officer Bauer is sticking around to ensure that Justin doesn’t say anything against the police.

Dev and Shahir confront Bauer who tries to explain his side of things. Shahir brings Bauer to see Justin but he takes a turn for the worse as his hematoma is bleeding out and he dies.

Dev is mad but Shahir stops him from making the situation worse. Dev wonders what would Shahir do if his son was racially profiled. Shahir then talks to Bauer to ensure that he tells the truth in what happened. We later see Bauer call into his sergeant to report what happened but we don’t know what will be in his report.

Later on we see Dev all his mother, whom he has been avoiding, to re-establish a relationship with her.

Zach and Dawn

It is funny when this show started the couple that we wanted to ship was Alex and Charlie but as soon as the show introduced Zach and Dawn as a couple, these two have totally become my favourite ship on the show.

Last episode, Zach told how his kids do not like Dawn. Zach tries to explain to Dawn that it was him that screwed up saying that he just thrusted Dawn on his kids with little preparation. Zach wants to make it up to Dawn with a romantic dinner. All seems forgiven as Dawn thinks it is sweet and gives him a kiss. But things turn south when Zach’s thoughtful gift of diamond earrings turn into a discussion of marriage when Dawn thinks the box was a ring. Zach notes the look of horror on Dawn’s face when she thought he was proposing. Zach wonders if marrying him is so bad and she tries to say that their previous marriages weren’t successful. Zach says his divorce was not his fault and she thinks he thinks her divorces was her fault. Before Zach can say anything, Dawn takes off.

Luckily Dawn is distracted by Elias, a patient waiting for a heart transplant. Elias takes a turn fo the worse when his heart stops beating for him and Dawn and Cassie put him on a machine that helps it beat for him. Elias is concerned that he won’t live long enough to realize his dream of opening an animal sanctuary. It seems that Elias is a lottery winner that wants to use his money for good while family members wants his money to fund their own projects.

When Cassie thinks she is found a donor heart for Elias, Dawn tells her that it isn’t viable because Elias will probably reject it because of some antibodies he built up. Until they can find a suitable heart, Dawn decides to put in an artificial heart in Elias where he would carry around the mechanics for it in a backpack. This would allow Elias to live a life for 18 months and hopefully within that time a heart will be found.

Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell and Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams

During the surgery, Cassie tries to bring up Zach’s gift but Dawn shoots it down as his poor attempt to get back into her good graces.

The surgery is a success and Elias is grateful to Dawn for allowing him to realize his dream.

Later, Dawn and Zach have a talk. Dawn tells Zach that he makes her happy. Dawn explains how when she and Charlie got married, they lost the fun they had together and didn’t want that to happen to them.

Dawn then gives Zach a ring (really a fancy donut) and asks him to still be her boyfriend. All seems forgiven and I have a feeling that the series will end with them being engaged or them getting married.

Alex and Charlie

Alex is facing behavoural issues with Luke in daycare and is at wits end at what to do.

It so happens that Alex’s patient, Hunter, a teenager who was brought into the ER by his parents because of his behavoural issues. Greg and Lindsey Rush tell Alex that Hunter of late has become extremely hungry all the time and has anger-management issues. Greg and Lindsey brought in Hunter to the ER because he hurt his arm breaking into the neighbours to steal food.

Before Charlie is brought in to consult on the arm, he meets the new staff psychiatrist, Dr. Amos Carver (Don McKellar) who introduces himself after watching Charlie sleep.

Meanwhile, the Rush’s think that Hunter is on drugs as that can be the only explanation for his sudden change of behaviour. However, Greg is a little proud at his son for standing up to himself as that was something he couldn’t do when he was younger. Greg seems to be happy that his son won’t turn out like him but still is worried over his health. Alex isn’t so sure it is drugs that is the issue and a psych consult is called in.

Charlie examines Hunter and sees Dr. Carver lurking in the background. Carver had a bad experience with a violent patient in the past and is a bit skittish so observes from afar. Charlie starts asking questions but gets no where as Hunter is quite surly.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

When the blood results come back negative for drugs, everyone is at a loss for what is wrong. Hunter then collapses and his spirit appears to Charlie.

At his office, Hunter explains what he experiences before he gets angry: headaches, blurred vision and extreme hunger. Before Charlie can ask more, Hunter’s spirit disappears.

Don McKellar

Carver drops by Charlie’s office and thought he was in a meeting. Charlie explains he was on the phone. Carver informs Charlie that he was looking over Dr. Murphy’s old files (I miss Gavin) and learns that Charlie was a patient. Carver wants them to continue the work Gavin was doing with Charlie but he seems non-committal.

Charlie then lets Alex know what spirit Hunter told him about his symptoms. Alex and Charlie figure out it is a tumour on his pancreas. In surgery, Alex removes the tumour successfully when she is informed of Luke acting out in daycare. Before Hunter wakes up, his spirit lets Charlie know that he doesn’t want to go back to being the docile self he was and liked the fact that his father respected him more for standing up for himself. At the same time, Hunter felt his dad was pushing him to being something he wasn’t by getting him a football instead of comic books he wants.

When Hunter is okay, we see Greg realize that he rather have the old Hunter back instead of projecting his fears on him. As Hunter recovers, we see his dad give him his comic books that he had wanted.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Back at Charlie’s office, he opens his door and is greeted with his spirit form but before he can make heads or tails of it, Carver returns to take about the day and wants to discuss continuing on his treatment. Charlie differs and says he is off to see Luke.

At Alex’s, we see that Luke is crying his head off and she is trying to be patient with her son. Alex then breaks her resolve and goes to Luke. Luke seems calmer as Alex plays with him.

So what does it mean that Charlie is seeing his spirit? Can Carver help Charlie? And will Zach and Dawn get married by series end? We have 5 more episodes to find out.

From the looks of the images and the description for “We Need to Talk About Charlie Harris” it looks like Charlie’s gift is going to end up causing more trouble than good.

Here is the synopsis CTV release for Saving Hope’s 14th episode:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) is challenged about the value of holistic medicine versus western medicine by Layla Rowland (Missy Peregrym, ROOKIE BLUE), a self-help guru with a hernia. When Alex tells her that surgery is necessary, Layla admits that she does not want to be put under anesthetic, so Alex must come up with a compromise in order to save her life. Dr. Charlie Harris’ (Michael Shanks) grip on reality and control over his abilities is called into question after he encounters a car accident and doesn’t notice an injured person because he’s been talking to a ghost instead. When two filmmakers come to Hope Zion Hospital, Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) enlists their help to get Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) to make a film of his own.

CTV has released the synopsis and images for episode 15 one full week before the episode will air. If you haven’t seen episode 14 yet then I suggest you avoid the synopsis for “Fix You” as it is a bit spoilery in terms of what happened in the previous episode.

Here is the synopsis:

The whole staff of Hope Zion Hospital is called in for questioning by the hospital board regarding Dr. Charlie Harris’ (Michael Shanks) bizarre and erratic behaviour. Although Charlie is not privy to what is being said about him, a spirit (Don McKellar, SENSITIVE SKIN) is listening in and reporting back to Charlie. Meanwhile, as Dr. Alex Reid monitors Layla (Missy Peregrym, ROOKIE BLUE), a self-help guru, post her awake surgery, Layla convinces Alex to allow her to perform some of her new age techniques on her. Though he is reluctant to do so, Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) agrees to do in-utero spina bifida surgery on the fetus of a university student, who is putting the baby up for adoption.

Fun fact! Missy Peregrym appeared in Smallville  in season 3’s “Delete” as Molly Griggs. While Missy and Erica never shared scenes as that couldn’t have been possible as Erica joined the show in season 4; what makes this a fun fact is that this episode is the first time ever that the name Lois Lane is mentioned and of course Erica would go on to play that role.

Now back to our recap…. It looks like Charlie’s gift comes to a head while Alex helps a self-help guru get over a trauma from her past to help her through a surgery and Dana helps Shahir make movie to help him with his adoption process. That’s a lot helping going on.

Cassie

Dev gets punched in the face when trying to help a wrestler who he thought was on steroids. Cassie manages to calm down Jake to take out pieces of glass out of his shoulder. Jake sort of flirts with Cassie by saying her name is short of Cassandra of Greek mythology. While examining Jake, Cassie observes his angry outbursts and calms him down.

Meanwhile, Billy is patching up Dev and wonders if he is okay if he asks out Cassie as he believes she likes him too. Cassie interrupts and wonders what could be wrong with Jake. Billy mentions how Jake hits his head with fluorescent lightbulbs as part of his act. Cassie determines that because of this, Jake has been slowly poisoning himself with mercury. Cassie lets Jake know that it will flush out of his system and she wants him to come back in a week so she can see how he is doing. Jake seems to interrupt this as Cassie wanting to see him but she quickly says that any doctor can see him.

Later in the on-call room, Cassie has changed from scrubs to her street clothes when she finds a book of Greek mythology that is booked marked to the chapter on Cassandra. Cassie is puzzled but I am worried that she has a stalker and something bad is going to happen to her. I really hope that the show doesn’t take Cassie into this dark territory as we near the end.

Dana and Shahir

Dana is dealing with twin filmmakers Dom and Iris Salt. They were brought into the ER because they fell out of their treehouse while filming their horror movie. Iris and Dom’s dad is a TV producer and are afraid to have him called in.

Dom and Iris are using the halls of Hope Zion to finish their horror movie when Dana has to tell Dom that he has a lesion on his liver and he needs to rest so it heals. To get the twins to stay put, Dana gets them to turn their film into a documentary to help Shahir make a video help with his adoption case.

While filming the video, Iris collapses and this is the time Mr. Salt arrives. Mr. Salt is quite the silver fox and during his interactions with Dana, I sense some chemistry. Iris collapsed because some fluid has leaked from her brain that Shahir needs to drain. Shahir manages to distract Iris enough to perform the procedure.

Afterwards, Dana, Shahir and the Salts sit down to watch the video that Dom and Iris made. Dana narrates the video to say any child would be lucky to get Shahir as a father. Dana ducks out of the film before it is over and Mr. Salt follows to congratulate her on the film. Dana tells Salt that she thought turning her specialty to trauma would fill the void she thought she was missing but it didn’t. Mr. Salt suggests that Dana become the host of this women medical show he wants to pitch. Dana thinks he is joking but Mr. Salt is serious and asks her out to dinner to discuss the details. Mr. Salt assures Dana that the dinner doesn’t have to end with them sleeping together in order for her to get the job. Dana jokingly says that is too bad.

Alex

Erica Durance as Alex Reid, Missy Peregrym as Layla and Wendy Crewson as Dana Kinney

Alex and Dana are attending Layla Rowland’s meditation class. The two ladies aren’t doing a good job at following the instructions as Dana just wants to ask about Alex and Charlie. But their talk is interrupted when Layla collapses in pain. Dana and Alex rush to her and determines she needs to go to Hope Zion and ends the class.

At Hope Zion, Layla has a hernia that has gone untreated for a while. Alex tells Layla that she needs surgery to fix it. Layla says she can have the surgery but refuses to go under and needs to be awake for the whole thing. Alex doesn’t think it is a great idea as it poses a lot of risks with her being awake such as moving around too much that could be fatal.

Layla fires Alex and discharges herself. Alex finds her and tries to talk her into having the surgery. Layla explains her fear of being unconscious resulted in the fact the last time she was, she awoke to a member of the football team on top of her, raping her. It took Layla a long while to regain her strength and power and control over that moment. Alex and Layla come to a compromise with the anesthesiologist on how to perform an awake surgery. This involves a local and a muscle relaxant with Layla controlling her breathing.

During the surgery, Alex opens Layla up and all seems good with the controlled breathing. However, as Alex needs to push through some scar tissue, things start getting painful for Layla that she asks Alex to distract her and tell her why she came to her class. Alex sort of discusses why she came that involves Charlie but she runs into a complication when Layla’s bowel’s are necrotic. Alex has to tell Layla that they need to put her under to fix the problem or she will die. Layla panics and starts to squirm creating more problems. Layla doesn’t want to go under as she fears what will happen. But Alex tells Layla they will work together to overcome her trauma. Layla agrees to go under and the surgery is successful.

During recovery, Layla wants to help Alex with her issue as she helped with hers. At episode end we see Alex come to a moment of realization that hopefully gets her back to Charlie and helping him deal with his gift.

Charlie

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Don McKellar as Amos Carver

It is Charlie’s gift that seems to be getting worse and instead of helping people is causing problems. We see Charlie walk out of a surgery for Noel who is starting to crash. Dawn wanted to Charlie to help save him and Noel’s spirit is asking the same but he just walks out as he remembers encountering Noel on a road side.

Dawn is angry at Charlie for walking out and says the board has observed his issues along with colleagues.

Amos tries to get Charlie to talk to him and continue what Gavin was trying to do.

Charlie does open up a bit to talk about Noel and how he saw him collapse on the road and pulled over to help.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

However, Charlie was talking to a spirit and comes across Noel’s car with him inside and that he was drunk. The reason why Charlie walked out of the surgery was that Noel lied to him about the nature of the accident.

One thing that Charlie is puzzled is that Noel keeps on talking about a cat. Charlie sees a cat outside of his office and goes to follow it. Amos is concerned and follows Charlie too. Their journey leads them to the morgue where Charlie pulls a sheet off a dead boy. This boy was riding his bike when a drunk Noel hit him and his stuffed cat fell out of his bike. We flashback to Charlie finding the boy and realizing that talking to spirit Noel prevented him from finding the boy and potentially saving him.

Don McKellar as Amos Carver and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Amos starts to yell at Charlie that he is letting the spirits take over and potentially endangering Luke. Charlie yells back at Amos. Dawn walks in and sees Charlie talking to himself and we see Amos starting to bleed from his head and we realize he is a spirit. Charlie breaks down and says spirits are everywhere. Dawn goes over the comforts a grieving Charlie.

Back at Charlie’s office, he is guilt-ridden over what happened to the boy and wants to tell the family. Dawn tells Charlie to go home and rest and she will talk to the family. We see Dawn go and tell the family with the mom crying over her son’s stuffed cat.

Later, Dawn sees the surgical board is filled with a lot Charlie’s surgeries that he asked to be moved up. Dawn tells the nurse to hold off on telling the patients and she goes to call the board concerned for Charlie. We see Charlie in his office not looking like himself and we all grow concerned for him.

Saving Hope Season 5 “Fix You” Recap

As we are nearing the series finale of Saving Hope, we are getting some happy endings to some story lines while I am growing concerned for what the show has in store for Cassie.

Cassie and her very bad day in the ER

Like the good Chief Resident that she is, Cassie has put herself on ER duty to allow some of her residents to take on surgeries. However, Cassie is dealing with cases that involves q-tips stuck in people’s ears and other things stuck in places where the sun don’t shine.

Throughout the episode, Cassie has been receiving gifts from a secret admirer that she thought was Billy, who says it wasn’t him. One of those gifts was a whole bunch of balloons where we discover Cassie has a fear of them. Another gift turns out to be a chameleon with a note saying something about how he is thinking of her and how a person can change for someone.

Dejan Loyola as Dev Sekera

While it is a mystery to Cassie, Dev and Billy who her secret admirer, we, the audience, suspect it is Jake the wrestler from the last episode. How do we know it is Jake? Remember last week how Cassie found a book on Greek myths bookmarked to page on Cassandra? Well, we suspect it was left there by Jake.

I am hoping that perhaps this story line will end up being happy. This season, Cassie has been the comic relief of the show and I would hate for the series to end on such a dark note for her character.

Shahir

Shahir is preparing to meet a pair of foster siblings that he and Jonathan could potential adopt at some sort of potluck. Beforehand, Shahir is coerced into a pre-natal surgery by a friend and mabe ex-girlfriend before he came out. Angeli has a young mother, Falik, who is 26-weeks pregnant with a child with spina-bifoda. Angeli wants Shahir to operate on the baby to put the nerves back in.

At first Shahir turns down the surgery but meets Falik. Falik tells Shahir that she is planning on giving up her son for adoption and fears no-one will not want to take care of a child with special needs if the surgery isn’t performed. Shahir tells Falik that even if the baby has the surgery, he might still need crutches. Falik still wants the surgery to be performed.

Shahir eventually agrees and when Falik starts to freak out, he calms her down. Falik notes that he must be a father in the way he was able to calm her. Shahir notes he is not but he and his partner are planning to adopt a baby.

During the surgery, Shahir has to operate directly on the fetus and because of that Angeli has to deliver the baby. The surgery was a success and the baby seems to be doing okay in the NICU. Falik is there and asks if Shahir and Jonathan are solid. After assuring Falik that he is. she asks if Shahir would adopt her son. We later see Shahir give Jonathan a call to see what he thinks.

Alex and Charlie

Charlie is fighting for his job and has come into Hope Zion to prepare his case. Several of the other doctors like Cassie, Dev, Zach and Shahir are all brought in front of the board to give statements about Charlie and answer questions about the board. We see Zach and Shahir defend Charlie while we see Amos listening in.

We learned last week that Amos is a spirit and Charlie isn’t happy with him at being deceived. It seems that Amos is stuck in limbo and didn’t tell the truth as he knew he needed to help Charlie in order for him to move on. Amos was afraid that Charlie would get him to move on in a different way if he knew the truth.

Missy Peregrym as Layla

Meanwhile, Alex has also been asked by the board to give a statement about Charlie. Because of this, Alex is a little distracted. Layla still wants to help Alex but she is still reluctant. Layla also wants to leave but can’t until she is able to breathe steadily post-op. Since Layla is stuck at Hope Zion, she really wants to help Alex especially after hearing that Charlie can speak to ghosts.

Alex refuses to open up about her truths and thinks it is funny that Layla encourages others to open up about their pasts and truths but won’t open up about her past at being sexually assaulted. Layla is hurt at Alex’s comments and leaves.

Don McKellar as Amos Carver and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Alex finds Layla at the chapel and admits that Charlie can see ghosts and she broke up with him because she thinks she is cursed. Layla thinks that Alex can understand Charlie better if she see things from his perspective. Alex allows Layla to let her see what Charlie sees. We see flashes of Alex and Charlier from earlier seasons of the show and we see her enter the spirit world. There Alex sees Amos looking for Charlie. Amos and Alex speak about Charlie and how he wants to help him. Alex may not totally understand what is going on but tells Amos that she will find Charlie.

When Alex wakes up, she finally understands but gets a bit overwhelmed and passes out. Layla brings Alex to the ER but she insists she is fine.

Later, we see Charlie interrupt Dev’s statement to tell the board that he has quit. When Charlie returns to his office, Amos is there. We finally get to the truth to the matter. All of this stuff of late stems from Charlie unable to save the young boy from getting killed by the drunk driver. It seems that this incident triggered Charlie guilt over his parents’ death. All of his life, Charlie blamed himself that his parents died in the car accident that he survived. But in fact, Charlie’s dad went to fast and another car hit them. Amos tells Charlie that he needs to let go of that guilt and blame. Charlie doesn’t want to as he feels he will lose his parents. But someone how that realization causes Amos’ spirit to disappear.

Alex comes into his office wondering where the board went as she was ready to give her statement. Charlie let her know that he resigned. Alex doesn’t think that is a good idea and tells Charlie she finally understands what he has been going through and is sorry she wasn’t there to help him and be there for him. Alex wanted to tell the board all about Charlie’s miracle saves and they were lucky to have a doctor like him at Hope Zion.

Charlie wonders where Alex was 20 minutes early. We finally get the moment we’ve been waiting for since the season premiere and that is Charlie and Alex back together, curse or no curse.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

And in a sweet family scene, we see Alex, Charlie and Luke return home.

So do we think this show will end with a happy ending?

Saving Hope Spoilers: Images and Description for “La Famiglia”

I was 100% correct to be concerned about Cassie and her admirer Jake as seen from the photos released by CTV. But the photos are also a little spoilery about what happens between the two (hint: it isn’t good for one person). Also, we see Shahir hold the premie baby he potentially could adopt but the photos look like Falik might have changed her mind and is taking off with the baby. As well, we see Zach try and get his children use to Dawn being part of their lives so hopefully that goes well. And we welcome back a familiar face from season 4.

Here is the synopsis for “La Famiglia”:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) has to put her concern for the newly-unemployed Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) aside when the chance to perform a revolutionary cancer surgery arises. Alex, along with Dr. Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden), Dr. Cassie Williams (Kim Shaw), and Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) band together for the surgery, and are surprised to be led by Dr. Jeremy Bishop (Peter Mooney, ROOKIE BLUE), who returns to Hope Zion Hospital. While they are performing the radical and controversial surgery, Charlie tries to help the distressed spirit of the patient. Cassie is unexpectedly called away from the surgery by her former patient Jake Bugle (James Preston Rogers, REIGN), who seems to have a very different idea of the nature of their relationship.

Episode 16 of Saving Hope airs Thursday July 20, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT.

Saving Hope Season 5 “La Famiglia” Recap

Happy endings seem to be fleeting on Saving Hope as we seem to have Shahir’s pulled from him and Cassie’s is a bit bittersweet. It appears that Zach and Dawn are going to live happily ever after. And we seem to get a happy ending for Charlie and Alex but as we inch closer to the series finale, even that is up in the air. So far, the only character to get a happy ending is Maggie.

Shahir

Jonathan and Shahir has given Falak a baby memory book and as she flips through it, we get our first indication that she is going to change her mind about the adoption. However, that doesn’t stop Falak from signing the adoption papers. Before Jonathan and Shahir get the baby formally. Falak asks to hold her son for the first and last time.

Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza

Shahir encourages Falak to hold her child as skin to skin contact helps with the bonding process. However, that proves to be a big mistake as Falak disappears with her son. An all-out search is on for the duo as the baby needs to go back into the NICU incubator. Shahir and Jonathan learn from Falak’s mom that she told her that she wished she gave her away as a way to encourage her to see through the adoption. Unfortunately, this caused the opposite to happen. Shahir finds Falak who tells him that she wants the chance to be her son’s mom. Shahir promises to drop the adoption and brings the baby back to the NICU. Later, Shahir visits Falak who apologizes for changing her mind about the adoption and tells him that she named the baby Hamza, which means steadfast.

Shahir then meets up with Jonathan and tells him that he promised Falak that they are going to drop the adoption. Shahir apologizes that he knew that Jonathan wanted to be a dad but finds the whole process very hard on his heart. Jonathan doesn’t want to hear what Shahir has to say and leaves. I have a feeling that this is the final nail in the coffin of their relationship.

Cassie

Cassie’s patient, Jake Bugle has returned to Hope Zion asking to see her. Jake claims he still has some issues based on his last visit. When Cassie goes to examine him, she not only sees he has cleaned up and is in a suit but he is now a used car salesman. Cassie also realizes that Jake is the one sending her all of the gifts and the book on Cassandra when he caresses her arm.

Cassie tries to let Jake down easy but he doesn’t take the hint. Even when Zach goes to speak to Jake to say that Cassie isn’t interested, he still doesn’t take the hint and waits for Cassie’s shift to be over.

James Preston Rogers as Jake Bugle and Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams

When it is, Cassie is called into the on-call room by Billy but it really was Jake who initiated the call. Jake has scissors in his hand and begs Cassie to return his affections by citing the story of Apollo and Cassandra. Cassie again tries to let him down gently but Jake refuses to listen.

Jake then thinks Billy is responsible for coming between him and Cassie. Just when it looks like Jake is about to attack him, Billy tackles him to ground but unfortunately, Jake gets stabbed in the abdomen with the scissors.

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams and James Preston Rogers as Jake Bugle

Cassie rushes Jake into the OR where she and Dana save him.

Part of Cassie’s storyline also involved her excitement in working with her professional hero Dr. Flora Johnson on this revolutionary procedure that the Hope Zion women surgeons are going to perform (more on that later).

Cassie was hoping to impress Dr. Johnson enough to be offered a job as her resident in New York. However, Dr. Johnson gets held up and sends Dr. Jeremy Bishop instead. If you recall, last season Cassie and Jeremy had a brief affair where he left her to try and patch things up with his wife back in LA. The marriage didn’t work out so Jeremy moved to New York to work with Dr. Johnson.

Cassie performed well in the surgery that Jeremy recommended her highly to Dr. Johnson. This was enough for Dr. Johnson and Cassie is moving to New York. While Cassie wasn’t pleased at seeing Jeremy because he broke her heart, she is appreciative of his good word.

Dana throws her a impromptu farewell party where Cassie encourage Billy to assert himself more and tells Dev how much she will miss him.

The Sugarbaker Procedure

This is a revolutionary cancer surgery that takes 14-hours. The patient is Santina Vanelli, an Italian immigrant, who worked very hard to bring her family over from Italy. Santina is 65-years old, raising her granddaughter after the death of her daughter. Santina has inoperable stomach cancer and was given two-weeks to live. The Sugarbaker procedure, if successfull, will give her 10 years.

Leading the charge at Hope Zion is Dawn, Dana, Alex and Cassie while Dev assists and Billy keeps the family updated.

As mentioned, Jeremy arrives to head up the operation on behalf of Dr. Johnson who originated the procedure.

Before the surgery happens, Santina gets a panic attack upon seeing her son-in-law Paulo, return. Relationships are strained between Paulo and the rest of the Vanelli family. This panic attack gives Jeremy some concern over proceeding with the operation but Cassie convinces they should proceed.

Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Just before entering the OR, Dawn learns from Shahir that she wasn’t the first nor second choice to be the new Chief of Surgery after Charlie’s departure. This greatly upsets Dawn that Dana and Alex have to calm her for the good of Santina.

More bad news comes in the form of Santina’s CT scan that shows expanded lymph nodes that could mean the cancer has spread. The ladies wonder if they should tell Jeremy but worried if they do, he will kibosh the surgery. The ladies decide not to tell Jeremy as the CT scan could be wrong.

Peter Mooney as Jeremy Bishop

During the surgery, the ladies are taking out the numerous tumors, when Bishop asks about the lymph nodes, Cassie says they look fine. Jeremy immediately is suspect since Cassie doesn’t have a good angle to know. When Jeremy goes in, he sees the ladies did not disclose the expanded lymph nodes and hopes that the cancer didn’t spread or this surgery is over and pretty much have killed their patient. The lymph nodes are removed and determined that the cancer didn’t spread.

Wendy Crewson as Dana Kinney, Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Meanwhile, Charlie may be out of work but that doesn’t stop him from helping the spirit of Santina. Santina feels incredible guilt for not welcoming back Paulo after her daughter’s death. It seems that Paulo briefly left the family and his daughter Bianca over his grief of losing his wife. When Paulo returned, Santina was not forgiving and took him to court to get custody of Bianca. Santina wants to reconcile their families and asks for Charlie’s help and appeals to his love of Alex to do so. Charlie sits next to Paulo as they await news on Santina and is very subtle on getting Paulo to talk about his in-law troubles. When Santina gets Charlie to say an Italian phrase about love, family and home, Paulo translates it. Lucia, Santina’s sister recognizes it as Angie’s favourite saying and this seems to reconcile the families.

Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell and Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller

After the surgery, Dawn is still fuming over being third choice after all of the sacrifices she has made to Hope Zion. When Zach arrives, Dawn asks him to take her home. Instead, Zach takes Dawn to her office where his sons are making them dinner (i.e. orange juice and Nutella sandwiches) to celebrate her surgery. Before sitting down, Dawn calls the head of the board to re-negotiate her deal that involves a 5-year contract, an increased budget, a pay raise and 6-weeks vacation so she can spend time with her family.

Later that night, Alex returns home to find Charlie cooking a delicious Italian meal (a recipe he got presumably from Santina’s spirit). Alex tells Charlie that she is ready for them to be a family again and proposes to him. Charlie says yes and is happy that Alex is going to make an honest man of him. Charlie slips on the engagement ring and seals their engagement with a kiss.

Next week is the penultimate episode and from the promo’s we are going to get the long-awaited wedding. But will it happen?
