There is no episode description, so far, but from the images it seems that Shahir is a patient but we also see Alex take a turn on the hospital bed too. And Charlie and Dawn looking quite happy, possibly talking to Alex. Also, it looks like Alex has turned to Dana for help with her hand.

From an earlier press release announcing the show’s renewal for a 4th season, the episode is described as:

Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) and Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) try to save the memory of a young woman suffering from Alzheimer’s with a radical surgery, but it’s another one of Hope Zion Hospital’s doctors whose life is threatened, requiring immediate medical attention. Huse Madhavji (Shahir Hamza)

Huse Madhavji (Shahir Hamza)

After almost a month off, Saving Hope is back for a stretch of episodes before its fall finale on December 17. So let’s dive right into the action of Hope-Zion. Tonight we get two characters that we don’t see too much of have significant story lines tonight: Shahir and Reycraft.

We open with Alex and Shahir doing some pre-surgery fencing. Alex has to stop because her hand starts to cramp plus Shahir was getting a bit aggressive. Alex finds out the reason why is Shahir is in love with a married straight man and wants to know what to do.

Maggie finds Alex practicing suturing and wants in on Shahir’s but no luck as it is Reycraft that is the lucky one to assist. Maggie then teases Alex about sexy Skyping with Joel who is in New Zealand but in reality Daniel Gillies is off filming The Originals.

Later, Maggie talks to Dr. Day about wanting to wish ill-will on Alex so she can be in on the surgery. Dr. Day thinks that Maggie might be hitting on him and says he is celibate. In a later conversation, Day tells Maggie that he is celibate to see if not having sex won’t get in the way of things.

Shahir’s patient has early onset alzheimer, Maria is 42-years old and has a devoted husband in Malcolm. We soon realize that it is Malcolm whom Shahir has a crush on. Shahir talks over the surgery with the two and both really hope that the surgery will bring her back.

With Dawn and Charlie, they are making out in her office when she starts to pressure him about having a baby together. Dawn even schedule an appointment with both of them with Dr. Katz to make sure both are good to go to start making babies.

Charlie is called away to the ER to treat man that stepped in front of a street car and lost a leg. Unfortunately, the man, Oliver, dies in the OR and his spirit appears to Charlie when he tries to give a sample to Katz. Olive wants Charlie to get his personal effects for him as something is in there that could be embarrassing. Zach refuses to do so unless Charlie gives him a player in their fantasy baseball league. This is truly a Canadian show now as they were talking about Toronto Blue Jays players.

Katz comes to take Dawn’s blood work and she is confident that there will be no problem with her. When Charlie and Dawn meet up in the elevator, he tells Dawn that he is ready to move forward and have a baby with Dawn as he likes to think about the future for a change.

However, when Katz brings the results back to Dawn, it is bad news. Dawn can’t have kids.

Back to Charlie and his spirit, what was in his personal effects was a key to a lockbox that contains $20,000 Oliver wants Charlie to take $20,000 in order to complete a deal that would make it $60,000 that will help clear his debts. Charlie at first refuses to do so but later agrees to consult Oliver’s kids. When Oliver’s son and daughter comes in, Charlie shows a treasure map of sorts. The daughter doesn’t want to chase after a treasure as she has bad childhood memories but the son wants to take a look. When the pair return with the lockbox, the daughter believes there is nothing in it as she has little faith in her dad. But when the son opens the lockbox, there is indeed $20,000 in it and two siblings start to cry. Just before Oliver’s spirit disappears, he tells Charlie that it could have been $60,000.

Reycraft’s storyline is about him operating on his mentor, Sam Campbell (Robert Joy) on an appendectomy. While sharing stories about Campbell with Rian during the surgery, Rian accidentally cuts Reycraft and some of his blood gets into Sam and vice versa. The two go and tell Campbell the situation and he reassures Reycraft that he has no blood-borne diseases. But Zach points out when looking at Campbell’s chart that he is Hep C positive. When Reycraft tells his mentor this news, he wants Raycraft to cover it up as it is a career ender. So Reycraft gets Rian to tell the lab he mixed up the patients in order to get Campbell’s blood work re-labeled. The cover up is on and Reycraft goes to tell Campbell that he has nothing to worry about. When Reycraft’s goes to get tested himself for Hep C, Campbell promises to have his back as he is used to this. Hearing that Reycraft realizes that Campbell has known all along that he had Hep C so Reycraft decides to go back to the lab to say he made the mistake and gets Campbell’s blood to be re-label correctly. When Reycraft tells this to his mentor, Campbell flips out and starts to demean Reycraft but he stands his ground to his mentor to make things rights. To apologize to Rian, Reycraft gives him Miguel Cabrera for his fantasy baseball league. Reycraft tells Rian he will take interferon and take some time off.

It is because of this situation that Alex steps into the surgery of Maria for Reycraft. Alex goes over the surgery with Maria and Malcolm. It is all about taking a certain fatty tissue from the abdomen into brain as it has neurotransmitters that should help Maria’s brain to start firing again. During the conversation, Alex’s starts to cramp and Malcolm thinks that she has focal distonia as he has seen it as a former musician.

Wendy Crewson (Dana Kinney) and Erica Durance (Alex Reid)

Wendy Crewson (Dana Kinney) and Erica Durance (Alex Reid)

So Alex sees Dana about her hand and she suggests getting an injection of botox in her hand so she can do the surgery. Alex agrees to it.

Maggie does manage to get into the surgery and during it, the two ladies tease Shahir on his crush on Malcolm. The surgery seems to be going okay but Maggie and Alex notice Shahir sweating profusely. The surgery continues on and when Maria’s brain is exposed, Shahir then tells Alex he thinks he is having a heart attack. Shahir is stubborn though and continues on to complete the surgery. All the while, Maggie and Alex start to treat Shahir, taking his pants down to get an EKG on him. When Shahir completes as much as he can, Dawn gets him to finally get treatment while Alex finishes. Later, Dawn wonders if he noticed any symptoms, Shahir says no. Charlie pays him a visit and Shahir gives high praise to Alex, the two share a tentative glance that Dawn notices.

Michael Shanks (Charlie Harris) and Michelle Nolden (Dawn Bell)

Later at Dawn’s office, to cover up the disappointment that she can’t have kids, Dawn breaks up with Charlie stating that he is still hung up on Alex. To further he point, Dawn says that the two of them wouldn’t make good parents together as they would always argue. Charlie agrees and the two part ways on good terms this time. Later when Dawn is alone in the elevator, she stops and grieves over the fact that she will not be a mother.

Maria wakes up from her surgery and immediately calls for Malcolm. Malcolm is pleased at that as before Maria didn’t know who Malcolm was. When Malcolm sees Shahir, he thanks him for risking his own life to save his wife.

Erica Durance (Alex Reid) and Huse Madhavji (Shahir Hamza)

Erica Durance (Alex Reid) and Huse Madhavji (Shahir Hamza)

When Shahir returns to his room, Alex is in his bead and the two have a talk about the heart and the head that while he has spent his life learning about the brain, he knows nothing about the heart. Alex is there to comfort him.

I have to say it was nice to see KC Collins and Huse Madhavji have some significant screen time tonight, especially Collins as we get learn more about Reycraft.

Next week it looks like we get Joel back and also Lexa Doig too!

Next week’s Saving Hope features the return of Daniel Gillies, who took the last episode off to presumably film an episode of his other show The Originals. From the episode’s description, it seems that Joel and Alex are having a bit of a hard time finding the time to spend together. We also get the return of Lexa Doig.

Here is what’s in store for episode 8 “The Heartbreak Kid” as summarized by CTV:

Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) and Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) try to make dinner plans – but not before Joel gets wrangled into working a day at the street clinic. It proves to be more than he bargained for when a chatty, recovering addict, Teddy (Damien Atkins), graces him with her presence – and an ever changing medical story. Joel has to use his street smarts to try and rescue Teddy before time runs out. Alex and Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) try to find a new groove as coworkers when an injured 13-year-old girl arrives after falling off a roof, and things would move a lot faster if her love-addled spirit kept quiet and let Charlie focus on his job. Dr. Sydney Katz’s (Stacey Farber) practice exam on Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) has Maggie facing hospital wide embarrassment – which she must put aside when David Zarb (Joris Jarsky) returns to Hope Zion Hospital for one special hello and an emotional goodbye. The episode also guest stars Michael Shanks’ wife and actress Lexa Doig as Selena Quintos.

“The Heartbreak Kid” will air Wednesday December 3, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.

Check out the images from the episode that has a major lack of Daniel Gillies but enjoy them anyways.

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid with the patient of the week

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid with the patient of the week

Joel has returned from New Zealand and his first stop is Hope-Zion to see Alex, who was supposed to meet him at the airport but forgot. Alex asks if his trip was ok then asks about the wedding. Joel answers the questions and presents Alex with a gift. It is expensive looking earrings that Joel thinks might be too much judging by Alex’s reaction but she says they are lovely. Charlie is off to side and witnesses this who exchange. Joel gets paged away and wonders why considering he is not working. So Joel and Alex makes plans for later to make up for not picking him up at the airport.

I think the show is starting to hide Erica Durance’s real life pregnancy as she was seen carrying like a billion binders and charts.

Joel
Joel goes to ER and learns from Zach that Selina asked for him. Selina fell off her bike, scraped arm and bumped her head. She wants to leave to open clinic and is rushing Zach to treat her. But Joel says Selina needs a CT and offers to open the clinic for her. Selina agrees.
At the clinic some not happy Selina not there. One patient, a transgender woman named Teddy tried to get methadone off Joel but no dice. Before Teddy leaves, she complains of headaches but still walks away. While Joel’s day at clinic continues, he finds Teddy convulsing in the waiting area.  Teddy is ok but Joel believes that she is in withdrawal so Joel gives her something to help before she gets on a flight for Fredricton for her grandfather’s funeral. As Teddy goes to leave again she starts to feel numbness on her right side and collapses. As Joel examines her Teddy starts to speak with a slur so he calls Shahir who eventually says that Teddy probably has a blled in the brain and needs to be operated immediately or she will die. Before the ambulance arrives, Teddy takes off. Joel thinks she has taken off to catch her flight but her friend says that she missed her grandpa funeral and points Joel to Teddy’s home under the train bridge. Joel finds her there and brings her to Hope Zion where she undergoes her surgery. Selina is grateful to Joel for his help and all he has done for Teddy. Selina gives him a kiss that Joel pulls away from and is about to tell her that he isn’t single but Selina says it was for Teddy.

Alex and Charlie
Alex and Charlie work on a young girl, Tatum who was brought in by her brother Milo after she jumped off the roof of their parents garage and missed the swimming pool. Tatum’s legs, ankles and feet are in bad shape but Jackson assures Milo that her sister is in good hands and calls Drs. Reid and Harris the dream team. When it comes to the surgery, it is Rian that is in the OR and not Alex. Charlie jokingly is worried about his safety with Rian being in the OR.

Michael Shanks as Dr. Charlie Harris

Michael Shanks as Dr. Charlie Harris

The surgery seem to go well but Tatum’s spirit appears. When they are alone, Charlie asks some medical questions but the teen gets distracted when her crush, Grady, arrives to sit with brother. When Tatum doesn’t seem to be waking up, more truths come out. We learn from Grady that he gave Tatum alcohol to get her to stop following him and encouraged her to jump off the garage roof like the other girls. but she ended up hitting the diving board. Milo tells Grady if Tatum dies he will never forgive him. Tatum realizes that Grady is gay and has the hots for her brother.

Learning that Tatum hit the diving board, he consults with Alex and finds out that her pancreas is bleeding. So back into surgery Tatum goes. In surgery, Rian and Lana see that Tatum’s abdomen is so swollen that it is not advisable to close her up. But Alex believes that Tatum needs to be closed up. The debate goes back and forth until Charlie backs her up and Alex closes up Tatum.

Tatum is going be okay and Charlie tells a lovelorn Tatum that she will find love again. Spirit Tatum then decides to get Charlie to orchestrate a reunion between Grady and Milo by leaving a note in Grady’s hoodie where “Milo” proclaims his love for Grady. When Tatum wakes up and she sees Milo and Grady two kissing and calls them a cute couple.

Katz and Maggie

Stacey Farber as Dr. Sydney Katz

Stacey Farber as Dr. Sydney Katz

As Katz and Maggie go see their patients, the Zarbs, she quizzes Maggie on some OB questions that could be on her board exams. Maggie only gives a two word answer then makes a joke.

Remember the Zarbs, David and Lara? They were in the second episode of season 3 “Kiss Me Goodbye”  In that episode, Lara fell into a coma and was kept alive to safely deliver the baby she was carrying, At first David wanted to pull the plug on Lara effectively killing their child, but David had a change of heart. It seems that David and Maggie have developed and friendship as the two talk about the pros and cons of milk banks and wall colours for the baby’s room. However, Katz notices that Lara has some brain hemorrhage and baby needs to be delivered now. Maggie comforts David and asks if he has any names picked out. David says it is between Dylan and Ezra. David then tells Maggie that he wasn’t ready for this and doesn’t know if he can say goodbye. Maggie tells David that he can take his time to say goodbye to Lara. Maggie goes to Dr. Day for advice about how to be there for David but he thinks she came to him for something else and tells her that she needs to apologize. Maggie is confused so Day tells her to check her email. Apparently, Katz sent an email to all the staff surgeons saying that Maggie isn’t ready to take the boards because the was flippant in answering her question. Maggie is offended but Katz believes it is true and banishes Maggie from the delivery room and tells her to keep David company.

Julia Taylor Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin and Joris Jarsk as David Zarb

Julia Taylor Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin and Joris Jarsk as David Zarb

Maggie goes to see David and go over the pregnancy bag that included a blanket that Lara was brought home and her mother before he. Lara wanted to do the same for her baby. David then refers to the baby as Ezra and tells Maggie about a boyhood stuffed toy of his. Maggie decides that David should see his son being born. At operating room window, David asks tons of questions as he can’t really see what is going on. So Maggie then decides he should be in the room. Katz lets them and little Ezra is born. David cuts the cord and worries that Ezra isn’t crying but a moment later cries are heard. But more complications ensues for Lara as she starts to crash. Katz tells David to say goodbye to Lara but he isn’t ready. After, David is with Lara and tells Maggie that he had hoped that she would wake up and hoped for a miracle but Maggie calls Ezra, who was brought into the room, that he is their miracle. Katz is present for this conversation and later tells Maggie that she was hasty in writing that email and then plants a kiss on Maggie.

Episode’s End
In the doctor’s lounge, Charlie tells Alex that he knows about her and Joel. Alex tells him that she wanted to tell him but didn’t know how as they were starting to get better between them. Alex tells Charlie she doesn’t want to break his heart but he tells her that she is his whole heart and world and that she is it for him. Charlie is flummoxed on how he is not that to her anymore and how easily she can move on to Joel. Alex asks what she can do, Charlie asks her to buy out his half of the condo as he can’t stand the thought of Joel being in the home that they shared. Alex agrees and goes to shake on it and Alex has a flash of a heart being drawn on a beach and Charlie’s face also in her flash. After Charlie leaves, Alex looks confused

Next week looks like Joel and Alex are starting to fray and Chalrie might be tempted into a one night stand

We are nearing the winter finale of Saving Hope and from reading the episode description there seems to be trouble in Alex’s and Joel’s relationship and despite what the promos show, I don’t think Charlie will be tempted from the woman from The Listener.

Here is what episode 9 “The Other Side of Midnight” is all about:

Dr. Zach Miller (Ben Ayres) pulls together a ‘polytrauma team’ to save the life of Nathan “The Rocket” Stewart (Peter Valdron, Backlash) after his latest race track injury, causing Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance), Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies), Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji), and Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) to tag in and out of the marathon surgery to fix the driver. When Alex and Joel butt heads over the best course of treatment for the patient, they can’t help but reflect on their own bumps in the road as “the right team.” It’s Dr. Charlie Harris’ (Michael Shanks) day off – and his expectations of a quiet morning are interrupted with the arrival of a beautiful woman passing time in the hotel bar. Charlie contemplates a romantic life without Alex…until an emergency has him rushing back to the hospital. Meanwhile, Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) tries to help a frustrated patient – only to be told by Zach and Dr. James “Jimmy” Dey there’s more to her story than meets the eye. Plus, Maggie decides to confront Dr. Sydney Katz (Stacey Farber) on a matter she can’t ignore. The episode also guest stars Lauren Lee Smith (THE LISTENER) as Astrid Rae and Rebecca Dalton (SPUN OUT) as Nora.

“The Other Side of Midnight” will air on CTv on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.

SH3_EP309_D5_KW_0183Tonight’s episode answered the question whether or not the show will write in Erica Durance’s pregnancy or not as so far they’ve started to hide with her carrying a lot of charts or sitting down a lot. So let’s get down to the action at Hope-Zion.

I am going to start with this pair first because what happens during this storyline has an affect on another later.

Maggie and Dr. Katz

Maggie is at Alex’s condo looking for an expensive sweater that Alex borrowed. Maggie finds Alex’s engagement ring and tries it on. When Maggie gets spooked from an alarm clock, she loses it. Later Maggie asks Rian for advice on what to do and he says best to just confess. Maggie does confess to Alex towards episode’s end in the on-call room but Alex is too tired to be pissed.

When Maggie arrives at the hospital, she helps lighten Katz load, who promptly gives her a save the date for her upcoming wedding. Maggie is surprised to learn Katz is engaged after learning she was only dating the gentleman for 10 weeks. Katz tells Maggie that there was no reason to wait but Maggie can think of something referring of course to the kiss from last week.

Katz fiancé Hershel brings her lunch but it is an egg salad sandwich, which unfortunately she is deathly allergic to egg. Hershel asks if she likes tuna but Katz jokes that she likes a BLT (both are Jewish).

At the doctor’s lounge, Maggie asks Rian, Shahir and Joel what it means when a heterosexual woman kisses another heterosexual woman means. Rian wants Maggie to spill the beans on who kissed her but Maggie stays mum. When Joel tries to bring up his two-cents, Maggie throws all of his past relationships in his face including his fling with Dana, which Alex hears, much to her surprise.

Later, Maggie confronts Katz about their kiss. Katz says it was nothing and was bored. Katz tells Maggie that at her age and within her Orthodox community she should have been married by now especially with her education. Maggie says someone doesn’t get married to someone they hardly know. Katz says she wants to get married. Maggie ask if she loves him. Katz does not answer.

Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza, Erica Durance as Alex Reid, and Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller

Huse Madhavji as Shahir Hamza, Erica Durance as Alex Reid, and Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller

Alex and Joel

The episode actually begins with Alex has gone to the hospital to do some paper work where Joel finds her wondering why she left his place. Joel suggests Alex get rid of her condo and move with him, which she laughs off. Joel then suggests they go to Liberia as doctors are needed there. Alex questions this and is non-committal to giving him an answer. Later, Zach, Alex and Joel talk about Selina as Zach sees Joel ignore a call from her. Before Alex can ask any further questions, an emergency comes in. It is superstar race car driver Nate “The Rocket” Stewart (Peter Valdron) who suffered a pretty serious crash that involves injuries to his brain, abdomen and feet. Nora (Rebecca Dalton), Nate’s much younger girlfriend is in quite the panic and calls in Nate’s ex-wife Tawny. While Shahir is working on Nate’s brain, Tawny arrives with Nate’s daughter, Rachel in tow, and tells Joel and Alex all about Nate’s past crashes and the surgeries involved. Nora and Tawny starts to argue about how best to care for Nate.

Joel is anxious to work on Nate’s feet but Shahir’s brain surgery is taking longer than expected. Alex sees that Nate’s abdomen is getting worse to the point where he will soon no longer breathe so jumps the queue to go next. However, during surgery, there are complications that delays Joel from fixing Nate’s feet.

When Joel finally gets into surgery, there is trouble as he finds motor oil on Nate’s bones that can cause problems if it gets into his blood stream. Rian, Alex and Joel talk about the best course of action. Joel and Alex go talk to Tawny about options. Alex suggests that amputating Nate’s feet is the best way to save his life. Joel believes he can save Nate’s feet while not putting his life in danger. Alex tells Tawny that Joel’s option will only lead Nate to be in constant pain for the rest of his life. Nora hears the news about amputation and argues with Tawny that Nate wouldn’t want that option. Tawny decides to try Joel ways. Alex and Joel argue over this decision but Joel says he is expert so they go into the surgery.

During the surgery to fix Nate’s feet, Alex ask if there is anything else she needs to know about his love life; Joel says no (of course we know there is more). Also during surgery Alex wonders what would they say to the family if the surgery doesn’t work. Joel says he only knows one thing he will say and that is to answer the question when Nate asks when he can race again. After the surgery is a success, another missed call from Selina causes Joel to confess that Selina kissed him but it meant nothing.

When Nate wakes up in the ICU he asks the question when can he race again. We don’t hear Joel’s answer as we go to the doctor’s lounge.

Alex wonders if there are more surprises in store for her. Joel says no and says again the kiss with Selina meant nothing, Alex asks why she don’t know about Joel working at the clinic and knife fight. Joel says that the clinic was a good thing for him and Alex brings up him wanting to go to Liberia. Alex sees a pattern again in their relationship. Things are great at first then Joel starts to get bored and they implode. Joel says they will make it work this time but Alex says they won’t because they are too different and she effectively breaks up with him.

Alex later runs into Charlie and the tow briefly share their hectic stressful day.

Charlie
Let’s get to Charlie’s day. It is Charlie’s day off and he is having breakfast at his hotel. Charlie is reading the financial section of the paper when a flirty guest, Astrid Rae (Lauren Lee Smith) gets all flirty with him talking about stocks. Later, Astrid talks to Charlie about what stocks to invest in. Astrid wonders if Charlie is staying at the hotel, he confesses that he is living at the hotel. Astrid travels a lot in her job in the private equity world. Astrid confesses her constant travel is hard on her marriage and she asks if Charlie is married. Charlie tells her it is complicated. Astrid then offers some advice on how to get a girl then invites him up to come up to her room (1501 in fact). Charlie declines and Astrid leaves. When Charlie pays his bill, he tells the bar keep he will pay Astrid’s bill too. But the bar keep asks what lady. TWIST. Didn’t see that one coming. This is one Charlie knows something is wrong with Astrid. Charlie rushes to her room and after forcefully getting housekeeping to open her room, finds Astrid passed out on the bathroom floor.

When Astrid is rushed to Hope-Zion, Charlie tells the doctors that she had a miscarriage.

Charlie goes to Dey wanting to find Gavin as he needs to talk to someone that knows about him about what happened. Instead, Charlie confides in Dey how he hallucinates and today couldn’t tell between the two. Dey asks if anything recently happened that may be the cause. We don’t hear Charlie answer but we know it is all about Alex

When Astrid wakes up Katz tells her that her placenta detached and that she lost her baby. Astrid asks if Charlie was the one that found her, he says that he heard her call out. Astrid thanks him then asks if he bought the stocks. This surprises Charlie as Astrid is the first person that he as seen that remembers their encounter. However, Astrid shrugs it off as being a dream. Astrid is saddened that is alone when the worse thing has happened to her (her husband is on his way). Charlie says she is not alone and comforts her.

Dana

Dana is treating Megan, a woman with some chest pains. Dana says she is fine but Megan tells her she wants her implants removed. Dana says that since there is no medical reasons for it, it would cost $6000.

Later, we see that Megan has done it herself after Dana off handedly tells her how to earlier and is brought into the ER bleeding. Dana learns from Zach that after Megan comes out of surgery, she is being sent to the psych ward.

When Megan gets out, Dana says she is going to be okay. Megan confesses to Dana that she did what she did because her abusive ex gave her the implants because he told her she looked like a boy and every time she looked her breasts, she thinks of him. Dana says Megan will be in the psych ward for a while because she self-harmed herself but Megan wants out as she is not crazy.

Dana then goes to talk to Dey about not getting her committed. They go back and forth for a bit as to why Megan did what she did but Dey says will he talk to her.

Later Dey tells Dana that Megan is being discharged. However, Zach gives Dana and Dey some information that might change minds of letting her go. Dey and Megan confront Megan about the different accidents she had over the years and believes that there was no abusive ex but that she has body dysmorphic disease. Megan denies it but Dana says she can get real help now. But Megan says that Dana has already helped her leaves. Dey tells Dana that they have no choice to let her go. Back at her office, Zach brings Dana a cup of coffee. The two believe that Megan will try this again with another doctor that doesn’t know about her. Dana blames herself for not catching the signs. Zach says she is a good doctor and not to blame herself.

Zach and Mal

Very briefly we see that Zach and Mal are still going strong romantically but is keeping their relationship a secret from the rest of the Hope-Zion staff.

End of Episode Musical Montage

Tawny and Nora seem to be getting along, Joel is in his car speeding at a very fast rate, Charlie is with Astrid as she rests looking at stocks and Alex is at home looking at three positive pregnancy tests. So we now know they are writing in Ms. Durance’s pregnancy! And of course the baby has to be Joel’s.

Next week, Lexa Doig is back and looks like she and Joel will be hooking up. And if Alex finds out then they are definitely not getting back together, baby or no baby.

This should be the winter finale of Saving Hope as next week is Christmas Eve so for the last episode of 2014, here is what we can expect in episode 10 “Days of Heaven” as described by CTV:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance), Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross), and Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) spend the morning hearing celebrated surgeon Thor MacLeod (Currie Graham, DALLAS) talk about his near-death experience. When a fellow fan loses control and nearly dies, Alex finds herself in the hospital alongside Thor in an effort to save the man’s life. But when Thor’s connection to the patient is revealed, Alex can’t help but wonder if the doctor is truly who he appears to be. Meanwhile, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) avoids Thor’s “insights” and tries to bounce an idea off Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) that could help solve the medical mystery of the patient’s spirit. Feeling less like himself than ever, Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) escapes Hope Zion Hospital by immersing himself at the street clinic – only to face a day of bad news and heavy consequences. Plus, Maggie must find the courage to confront Dana on an issue involving her daughter, Molly Kinney (Eliana Jones, HEMLOCK GROVE).

“Days of Heaven” will air this Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT (not it’s usual 10pm ET/PT). The show will return on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 with back-to-back episodes.

Tonight’s Saving Hope was the last one for 2014 and it sees one of its main characters possibly heading to the slammer. Who that may be, you will have to read on to find out.

Let’s start with…

Joel

Joel is MIA at Hope-Zion and Charlie is picking up his slack. Where is Joel? Well, he is at the Street clinic helping Selena out. While treating a patient, a man named Brad bursts in saying he wants to see Selena. Joel tells Brad that Selena isn’t there but will tell her that he was looking for her.

When Selena does return to the clinic is was from a meeting a city hall. Unfortunately, she couldn’t get an injunction to prevent the building where the clinic is housed from kicking them out. When Joel tells Selena that a man named Brad was looking for her, Selena starts rambling that Brad has been banned from the clinic.

Later, Joel wants to help Selena keep the clinic but she doesn’t want Joel’s help especially when he wants to treat her broken wrist that supposedly occurred from her bike accident in a previous episode.

As the clinic is closing up, Selena is screaming over the phone. When she gets off, Joel learns that there is no injunction, the clinic is being kicked out at the end of the week.

Later in the exam room, Selena finally relents and gets Joel to check her wrist. It is broken and as Joel puts it in the cast, Selena wants to know why he is at the clinic. Joel is evasive and Selena knows that he is at the clinic to avoid his woman problems after noting him ignore a text from Alex asking if he is okay. In answer, Joel plants and passionate kiss on Selena and the two proceed to have sex.

Afterwards, in the clinic’s parking lot, Joel offers to give Selena a lift so she won’t have to ride her bike with a broken wrist. Selena declines and tells Joel that their hook-up, while good, was a mistake.

Selena rides off and as Joel starts to get into his car, Brad appears and pulls him out and starts to beat the crap out of him. However, Joel fights back and punches him so hard that Brad falls back and its his head on a parking spot barrier. Joel sees his head bleeding and he does take off but to get help.

Brad is brought into Hope-Zion. Charlie and Zach try and save his life but Brad dies. Selena arrives and we discover that Brad was her abusive husband that she got a restraining order on.

Later, Joel comforts a mourning Selena who is the morgue with Brad’s body. Jackson informs Joel that the police want to speak to him so he leaves Selena to grieve.

Joel tries to explain to the police what happened but the police still need him to with them so they place him in handcuffs, apparently under arrest.

Alex and Charlie

Alex, Maggie and Dana are listening to renowned neurosurgeon Thor Maclead (Currie Graham) giving a lecture about his about that details his near death experience that involves an out of body experience of him watching his own surgery. Dana and Maggie snicker at the talk while Alex actually gets flashes of her own time in the spirit world and seeing her own body being operated on.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Alex goes to get a copy of Thor’s book signed and makes small talk to a man behind her, Robert, who happens to be a patient of Thor’s. Alex notes that he doesn’t look well but Robert assures her that he will be okay.

After Alex gets her booked signed, it is Robert’s turn. Thor is not happy that he is there but Robert insists on hearing Thor say that there is a heaven. Thor says there is and that is exactly what Robert wanted to hear so he then proceeds to pull out a drill and puts it to his skulls and pulls the trigger.

Robert is taken to the ER where a drill bit is sticking out of his skull. Thor tells Alex and Shahir that he is treating Robert for depression using DBS (deep brain stimumation) electrodes and that he was starting to get suicidal thoughts. Thor and Shahir argue over the best course of treatment but Alex comes up with an alternative that meets both their satisfaction.

As they scrub for the surgery, Thor tries to get Alex to tell of her near death experience but she is not up to sharing. Neither is Charlie when pressed by Thor to tell him about his near death experience.

As the surgery is going on, Charlie happens to see Robert’s spirit, begging for his help. Robert tells Charlie that Thor lied about there being a heaven. We also learn that Robert is afraid to go to sleep because he doesn’t want to miss his wife coming home, who apparently told him she would be back in an hour and that was a year ago. During their talk, Robert seems to go blank and it happens later during a conversation in an elevator.

Eventually, Alex does open up a bit about her time in the spirit world to Thor as they watch the surgery.

The surgery is a success but Shahir wants to perform an MRI to make sure there is no possibility of a stroke. Thor rather do the MRI himself after Robert is transferred back into his care.

Later there is some complications and Alex believes that Robert’s DBS implants were placed incorrectly that is possibly causing abnormal cortisol levels and not a tumour as originally suspected. Charlie also believes that is the cause of Robert’s insomnia.

In another conversation with Robert, Charlie learns that Robert’s wife was killed by a drunk driver and he blocked the news from his mind so he wouldn’t have to cope. Robert wonders if he will remember any of his time in the spirit world, Charlie hopes that he will.

We also learn that Thor deliberately placed the DBS implants incorrectly to try and trigger a near death experience in Robert to try and get him to have an out of body experience. Alex is disgusted at Thor for using Robert as a guinea pig. Shahir has to go in a fix Thor’s mistake.

When Robert wakes up, he does remember that his wife has died, so perhaps he does remember his time in the spirit world.

Later, Alex is about to tell Charlie that she does remember seeing him in the spirit world when Jackson interrupts to say that Joel has been arrested.

Dana and Maggie

Dana’s daughter, Molly, has gotten a job at Hope-Zion as a porter. Dana is thrilled especially after hearing that Molly wants to enter medical school at Dalhousie.

When Maggie and Katz go to see a patient who has recently given birth, Molly is there after helping the patient to the bathroom and also clears her meal trays. Maggie notes that some of the patient’s pain killer medications are missing.

Maggie first goes to Molly asking about it, which she denies taking. Maggie then goes to Dana to tell her about her suspicions, which Dana takes it nonchalantly. When Molly completes her first day and tells Dana about her encounter with Maggie. Dana says it is just a misunderstanding that can be cleared up. Dana isn’t quite ready to go home yet so she gives Molly some money for food. When Molly leaves, Dana goes through Molly’s purse to try and find the missing drugs. Molly returns and sees her mom rummaging through her stuff and is pissed at her mom for not trusting her and believing Maggie.

Dana then storms into the doctor’s lounge and reams out Maggie for accusing her daughter of stealing drugs and if she doesn’t it again, she will take legal action.

Maggie isn’t happy being yelled at by Dana so she goes to clear the air with her. Dana seems to have forgotten their past confrontation and the two doctors seem okay. Katz, who was in the lounge when Dana came in, gives Maggie a comforting hug.

Outside the hospital we see do see that Molly did actually steal the drugs and we her popping a pill before Dana comes out to take her home.

The episode ends as we see tonight’s cast watch Joel being led in handcuffs by the two cops outside of Hope-Zion.

So what will happen with Joel? We will find out on January 7, 2015. In the meantime, let me know what Joel’s fate will be in the comments.

To ring in the New Year, Saving Hope returns next week with two back-to-back episodes on January 7, 2015.

Here is how CTV describes episode 11, entitled “The Parent Trap” and episode 12 “Hearts of Glass”:

In Part 1, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) gears herself up for a night home alone, but an emergency phone call has her playing “aunty Alex” to Dr. Dana Kinney’s (Wendy Crewson) daughter, Molly Kinney (Eliana Jones, HEMLOCK GROVE). Dana barges to Alex’s condo, where Alex gets a taste of the push-and-pull between mother’s and teenage daughters, before asking Dana a very important question of her own. Meanwhile, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) faces a tough fight night of his own when two female MMA fighters go for Round 2 in Dr. Zach Miller’s (Ben Ayres) ER. In spite of their tough exteriors, Charlie must gain the trust of one fighter if he is going to be able to save her limb…and life. Plus, a foster mother places her heart in Dr. Dawn Bell’s (Michelle Nolden) hands, while her foster-daughter is keen on breaking hospital rules to keep the two of them together. Also, Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) discovers that the Hope Zion Hospital staff have been rated on “Grade Your MD.”

Part 2: When a donor heart becomes available, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) and Dr. Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden) jump at the opportunity to provide the ailing Leila (Samantha Kaine) with her sorely needed replacement. Wanting the heart for himself, however, is the litigation‐happy Elliot Stout, who’s also on the transplant list. Ready to sue to get a heart, Elliot creates an ethical and legal dilemma for Hope Zion Hospital doctors with major repercussions. Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) and Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) meet a patient with exotic hardware implanted into his legs, only to discover that he’s risked his health by resorting to Medical Tourism in the hopes of lengthening his limbs. After falling asleep in surgery, Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) is having a hard time balancing studying for the boards and fulfilling her hospital duties. When a patient forces her to think outside the box, she enlists Dr. James Dey (Mac Fyfe) to get back on track. This episode of
SAVING HOPE is directed by actor and director Jason Priestley (HAVEN, CALL ME FITZ) and guest stars Adamo Ruggiero (DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION).

Let’s hope for episode 12 that Stacey Farber is in it so we can have a mini Degrassi reunion.

Saving Hope returns on January 7. 2015 on CTV at 9pm ET/PT.

Happy New Year Saving Hope fans. It is our first new episode of 2015 and it is Part 1 of two back-to-back episodes. We are also Joel-free tonight as his arrest in the last episode was a good excuse for Daniel Gillies to take off and film The Originals. A question for you The Originals fans, how does that show handle his absence (if he has any) when he’s off filming Saving Hope? Let me know in the comments.

Joel has been bailed out by Zach but no one at Hope-Zion can reach him.

A running joke throughout the episode was Maggie discovering the website “Grade your MD”. Here are the results: Charlie has a score of 3.5 out of 20 where one reviewer says he talks to himself a lot; Zach got a 12 based on one 1-word review: hwful (yes it was spelled that way), Shahir got a smokin’ hot score, and Maggie too. The highest rated surgeon at Hope-Zion is of course Joel.

Let’s get to the action in tonight’s episode. I am going to leave Alex last as I have a very important poll question to ask.

Dawn

Dawn patient is Leila (Samantha Kaine), who has a badly damaged heart but believes she can remove the damaged part while keeping the heart. Leila’s foster daughter, 12-year old Giselle has high hopes that the surgery will be successful. In fact, she needs it to be successful as Leila has put in papers to official adopt her. Rian, also in on the surgery, takes Giselle under his wing as she reminds him of his sister, who we later learned died at age 11 of cystic fibrosis.

Also on Dawn plate is Malanda, who is being sued by Elliot Stout, a patient in the ICU with C. Difficile. The basis of the lawsuit is that Elliot feels that Malanda hasn’t done all he can to treat him, Dawn goes to speak to Elliot to try and get him to drop the lawsuit but instead he also sues. Elliot also asks Dawn to find his mother’s mission pillows.

While Dawn starts to prep Leila for surgery, she notices Giselle in the gallery and tells her she can’t be there. Outside of the operating room, Giselle says Elliot told her it was her right to watch. Dawn tells Giselle that it is not hospital policy so Rian drives Giselle back to the respite home she has been staying at.

During the surgery, Dawn discovers the heart is too damaged and that Leila’s best hope is a transplant, which she tells her when she wakes up. Later, Dawn finds Giselle has returned to the hospital and is sleeping in a supply closet with Elliot’s pillows. Dawn returns the pillows to Elliot, who tells her that he is still suing. Later, we see Dawn set up blankets and pillows in her office for Giselle to stay while her mom recovers.

Charlie

Charlie’s patients are two competitive MMA female fighters. One, Tammy, comes in with a dislocated elbow, which Charlie quickly sets. When Tammy hears her rival, Kara, next the bed over, the two immediately continue their brawl that was prematurely cut short. Tammy manages to take Kara down before Charlie can separate them.

Charlie notices that Tammy is a very angry woman, who learned how to fight to stop her drunk father from beating her mom. Charlie tries to get her to calm down but then she starts to get nosebleeds. Charlie thinks she might have a concussion and puts her on a watch. Tammy says not to worry about her as she always gets nosebleeds, which Charlie tells her that no one always gets nosebleeds.

We learn that Tammy doesn’t have a concussion but her arm, which had the dislocated elbow, starts to swell up. Charlie rushes her to the operating room but Tammy refuses to go in a wheelchair. Tammy wants Charlie’s assurance that he won’t cut off her arm.

During surgery, Charlie notices her arm feels like butter and she starts to bleed from her GI tract. Tammy spirit appears and wants to know why Charlie is not operating. Charlie tells her that she is unstable and wants to know if she is taking steroids? Tammy stays silent so Charlie goes to Kara and their mutual trainer Noelle. Noelle is washing her hands of Tammy and her constant bad behaviour, especially her stick of falling to ground after every match pretending not being able to get up. When Charlie hears this, he realizes that it isn’t an act but that Tammy has lupus. When Charlie goes back to the operating room to resume the surgery, he shares his findings with Maggie, but she says there is nothing in her chart that indicates lupus. But Charlie knows he is right as Tammy confirms she was diagnosed at 15.

Tammy’s surgery is a success and while recovering is visited by Kara, who put aside their rivalry. Kara even asks Tammy to train her while she recovers as she has dumped Noelle. We later see them cement their new partnership by playing a game of thumb war.

Alex and Dana

Just before Maggie starts the night shift, she notices that Alex has been throwing up a lot and thinks that she must be coming down with something.

Alex then receives a phone call and when she goes it is to rescue Molly, who is visibly drunk, in front of a broken up house party. The police think that Alex is Molly’s mom, which she doesn’t correct. The police let Molly go with a warning and Alex takes her back to her place.

At Alex’s, Molly begs Alex not to call her mom but too late, Dana has managed to track Molly down thanks to the Find My iPhone app. Mother-daughter get into an argument about her almost arrest and her lies (especially about not stealing the meds from a previous episode) and her drinking and who is responsible. When Dana wants to take her home, Molly starts to feel sick so runs into Alex’s bedroom bathroom to throw up.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Wendy Crewson and Dana Kinney

While alone, Dana pours herself a glass of white wine and confesses that she is more upset that Molly called Alex and not her. Alex leaves to go check on her but she has been gone for awhile, Dana notes.

Alex confesses that they were taking turns throwing up and tells Dana that she is pregnant. Dana is delighted with the news and offers her congratulations then asks who the father is. Alex says it is an orthopedic surgeon, meaning that she doesn’t know who the father is. Okay, here is my mea culpa. I just assumed it was Joel because they recently slept together and I wasn’t too sure the last time she slept with Charlie. This is what you get for assuming.

Alex then asks Dana to be her baby’s god mother but before she can answer, they here noise from the bathroom and find the door locked. Alex opens it and find Molly in a bathrobe and has knocked over and broke a bowl of Alex’s. Dana tells Molly that she can’t just take a bath without permission.

The mother-daughter have another argument and Dana tries to take her home but Molly storms off. Alex goes to talk to Molly, who confesses that she was having a hard time when Dana got sick. Alex assures Molly that Dana is cancer-free but Molly believes that she will probably get breast cancer too so she might as well party. Alex urges Molly to talk to her mom.

Wendy Crewson and Dana Kinney and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

As Alex leaves Molly alone, she tells Dana that the best thing right now is not to fix Molly but just be there for her. Dana takes those words to heart and goes to talk to Molly but when she finds her, she sees that she has thrown up and has overdosed on heroin. Alex rushes in and calls 911. Dana is futile has a doctor but acts more like a panicked mother while Alex remains calm and helps keep Molly as stable as possible before the ambulance arrive.

At Hope-Zion, Dana feels helpless but Alex tells her to trust Zach as he knows what he is doing. After talking to Molly’s dad, Dana tells Alex that don’t let what happened tonight put her off parenthood that being a parent is worthwhile and Alex will make a great mom. Dana also agrees to be the godmother to Alex’s baby.

Later, Molly wakes up and the two reconcile and Dana insists that Molly go to rehab.

Back to Alex, who is waiting in the ambulance bay for Charlie. Alex blurts out that she is pregnant. Charlie’s reaction is that having more Alex Reids in the world is a good thing and gives her a big hug and leaves. Alex then pulls out her cell phone and leaves Joel a message saying they need to talk.

so here is the big question:

I personally want it to be Charlie’s.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

It is the second part of Saving Hope’s back-to-back episode and you know who else is back: Joel.

We will get to Joel’s return soon but let’s start with…

Maggie

Dr. Katz catches Maggie sleeping during a surgery, which she is reprimanded for. Maggie is stressed out and can’t sleep because she is juggling studying for her boards and still working her regular surgical shifts. After a study sessions, Lana wants Maggie to give her some advice about her weakness in cardiac. Maggie suggests that Lana sit in on a heart surgery (this becomes important in the Alex and Dawn section).

Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller

Benjamin Ayers as Zach Miller

Maggie is called to the ER by Zach to take a look at Helen Kruger (Catherine Fitch) with an apparent broken wrist. But Helen has a phobia of doctors and refuses to be seen by Maggie and Zach. So Maggie goes to Dr. Dey for a consult but she interrupts a meditation session. Maggie wonders if it will help her relax and Dey says it should. So Maggie asks Dey to first help her with the consult so he can then show her how to meditate.

Even with Dey present, Helen is still very skittish. So Dey comes up with the idea that Maggie should examine Helen in civilian clothing. Dey theorizes that Helen probably had a traumatic experience with a doctor so seeing one not in its usual garb can help. As Maggie changes, we do see Dey try his best not to take a peek even after Maggie asks if he is still on his vow of celibacy.

Dey then gets Helen and Maggie to play a little roll reversal. Maggie opens up a little bit about being stressed and this gets Helen to slowly open up too. Eventually, Helen shows Maggie her wrist. Helen tells Maggie at first the bump on her wrist was nothing so didn’t get it checked out but then it grew three times over the last month. Helen is afraid it is a tumor and she is going to die. Maggie tells her it isn’t a tumor but a ganglion cyst (which I actually have one on the back of my right hand, but it is really tiny). Maggie tells her she won’t die and there are two options: surgery or something that requires her to look up in her text book. When Maggie asks for the text book, I pretty much know what she will do with it. Maggie pretends to read the treatment for it and ends up using the text book to smash the cyst. I was told from my doctor that he could smash my cyst but it probably will come back so I shouldn’t bother unless it grew (it hasn’t).

Later, at Dey’s office, the two start to medidate and there is sexual tension in the air but no sex as the two just meditate and after it is over, Dey sends Maggie to write Dawn’s practice board exam. These two are so going to sleep together, sooner rather than later but I really do miss Gavin.

Joel

Apparently Joel knows that Alex is pregnant and while waiting to get coffee, he coos to a 6-month old boy in front of him, whose mother asks him to hold him while she pays for her food. Charlie comes upon him and Joel tells him the baby isn’t his. Charlie jokes that he probably has said that many of times. In all seriousness, Joel believes that he is the father of Alex’s baby and won’t run away. Also, according to Zach, there is a baby daddy pool at Hope-Zion (Zach thinks it is Joel’s) and if it is, what will Joel do: marry Alex or leave Hope-Zion.

In the ER, Joel treats Donny (Adamo Ruggiero), who has come in with a broken clavicle. Unfortunately, Donny’s treatment is a bit hindered by two medal rods sticking out from both legs. Donny tells Joel that he broke his legs while paragliding in Aruba. When Joel notices the name of the clinic on the rods, a quick Google search reveals the clinic was actually for limb lengthening.

Joel sees that the monorails are really causing more harm than good for Donny, who wanted it to gain two more inches so he can join the air force, which is a family tradition. When Donny goes to lengthen his legs again, it further damages his legs that Joel has no choice to remove them.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

During the surgery, Charlie scrubs in and talk flips between how to tell Donny that he will probably go back to his original height and back to the baby daddy drama that is between the two.

After the surgery, Joel gives Donny the bad news but has a pilot friend of his talk to Donny that while he can’t join the air force, he would make a fine pilot, which he has a pilot license.

Alex and Dawn

Alex is studying for her boards with Rian, Lana and Maggie when she realizes she has an appointment with Dr. Katz about her baby.

Katz asks her what her birth plan is but it is clear that Alex hasn’t thought things through. Katz wants to know how involved the father is but Alex confesses she doesn’t know as apparently there was an overlap between Charlie and Joel. Alex wants to perform a paternity test. Katz says that the best way to do that is an amniocentesis but thinks it is a bit invasive when it is not necessary. Katz suggests that if the baby daddys can wait then so can she.

Dawn’s day starts with her breaking a date with someone later that night and continues with Giselle grabbing her when Elliott Stout is in cardiac distress. The Hope-Zion team manages to save him. Elliott realizes that this incident bumps him up to priority 1 in the heart transplant list provided his C.Difficle infection is at bay.

Dr. Rocca and Dawn summon Alex to let her know that she will be Elliott’s doctor from now on. When Alex is examining Elliott, he is being his usual charming self and wants Alex’s name so he knows who exactly is caring for him so that he perhaps can use for a future lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Giselle is doing Leila’s hair and Leila shares with Alex how Giselle letting her do her hair is when she knew that the young girl would finally open up to her. Their bond is quite clear that you can probably see the heart break coming. As Giselle climbs into Leila’s bed to get some sleep, Dawn calls Alex out to tell her some good news.

A heart has become available and the top two candidates are Elliott and Leila. Dawn rules out Elliott because of his C. Difficile infection so Alex tells Leila and Giselle the good news that she is going to get a heart.

Giselle is so happy her mom is going to get a heart that she shares the good news with Elliott (who actually thanked Giselle for getting help when he was in cardiac arrest). Giselle hopes that Elliott gets a heart soon. When Giselle leaves, Elliott makes a quick phone call.

Just as Dawn is about to cut Leila opens, Rocca comes in and stops Dawn. Despite his how he feels about Elliott, Rocca is taking the heart for him as he actually had priority and his infection is cleared. Dawn didn’t check for that and is the reason why she lost Leila’s heart. You can see that Dawn is clearly pissed at this news.

Glenda Braganza as Melanda Tolliver and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Glenda Braganza as Melanda Tolliver and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

As Leila is being wheeled back to ICU, Giselle notices this and Dawn has to tell her a mistake has been made and Giselle sees Elliott being wheeled in and she realizes that he stole her mom’s heart and wishes he would die. During this, Alex gets accidentally knocked over and then goes to Katz to get her baby checked out. Alex wonders to Katz how can she juggle being a doctor, studying for boards and having a baby and doing so all alone. Alex tells Katz that she needs to know who the father of her baby is and doesn’t want to wait. Katz respects her choice.

During Elliott’s surgery, Dawn reminds all the doctors that they will do their best to treat him. Lana comes in to observe. When Dawn removes Elliott’s bad heart, Lana quips that she is surprised there was a heart in there. This gets Dawn to stop and after a brief pause gets a nurse to put a towel over Lana’s face and slaps it hard. Dawn tells Lana to stay quiet and Alex explains to Rian that the towel kept Dawn sterile.

The surgery is successful and Dawn tells Lana that she was thinking the same thing. Mal then comes in to say something is happening with Leila. We know it is bad news as Charlie sees Leila’s spirit wandering the halls of Hope-Zion looking for Giselle.

Mal, Alex and Dawn are doing their darndest to save Leila but to no avail. Dawn breaks the news to Giselle, who of course is very upset. Leila tells Charlie that she can’t leave until she knows that Giselle will be okay (we know she will go back to foster care) but when we see Dawn and Giselle grieve together, Leila’s spirit disappears and I get teary-eyed. I am not quite sure what this means? We know that Dawn wants to be a mom so will she adopt Giselle? Might just be because you don’t spend two episodes with these characters and not have it lead somewhere.

Dawn returns to her office when Joel storms him wanting to know his fate at Hope-Zion. Dawn doesn’t want to deal with him right now but Joel insists so she suspends him as she can’t have someone with a manslaughter charge working at the hospital. Joel sees that Dawn has lost a patient and it not thinking straight. Joel makes an impassioned speech about saving people’s lives that Dawn reverses her decision.

Dawn then goes to supervise the mock board exam where she lets Rian, Lana, Maggie and Alex know what happened to Leila and how well Elliott is doing. When Dawn goes to apologize to Lana, she says it isn’t necessary and quits the surgical program as she has been really struggling.

After Lana leaves, Dawn tells the rest that the mock test isn’t important and sends them all home. The episode ends with a still grief-stricken Dawn with tears falling.

What I am looking about this season is we are really seeing growth from several characters, especially Dawn, who was first introduced as some cold woman and really was her. But certain situations have warmed Dawn’s heart from adopting that hamster to what has happened to Leila and Giselle.

And I am glad that the show no longer has to hide Erica Durance’s pregnancy!

It seems like the next new episode of Saving Hope won’t resolve Alex’s baby daddy drama as she goes away for a hike in the woods for some presumably alone time to clear her head. For those that are wondering, the last time I checked my poll Charlie and Joel are deadlocked as to who is the father.

But back to episode 13, entitled “Narrow Margin”. CTV describes the episode thusly:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) steps away from the hospital for a hike in the woods, but can’t get away from medicine when she finds a trapped teenager in a dire situation. Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) needs Dr. Joel Goran’s (Daniel Gillies) help when a woman from the clinic won’t be seen by anyone else, and Dr. Zach Miller (Ben Ayres) has his hands full when an exotic dancer comes into the ER.

The images that CTV released all deal with Alex trying to save this young boy while his really cute dog looks on in concern for its master.

“Narrow Margin” airs Wednesday January 14, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Update on the Alex Baby Daddy poll from last week. Joel 45.83% of the votes. Charlie is at 44.79% and Clark Kent is at 9.38%. If you are a Smallville fan like I am and the reason why I love Erica Durance, will get why I made Clark a choice. It stems from a line that Lois tells Clark in the season 10 episode “Scion” where Lois mentions how when (and she says when not if) they have kids of their own that Clark would make an amazing father.

But I digress. Speaking of Alex’s baby daddy, lets start with those two.

Joel and Charlie

The two men are in the Hope Zion elevator. They talk about Alex’s decision to wait till the baby is born to get a paternity test. Both men are impatient but agree to Alex wishes and be patient for her sake.

Later at the doctors lounge, Charlie asks Joel to switch a surgery with him but he is distracted by his upcoming trial but Joel agrees to get his mind off of his troubles.

In the ER, Charlie goes to see a mute patient, a Cambodian lady named Sue. A young woman is with her and tells Charlie that she doesn’t talk and only wants to see Joel. Charlie tries to treat her but finds Sue’e teeth are falling out. Sue turns out to be a patient of Joel’s at the clinic and when he examines her, he finds a tumor on the roof of her mouth that has also made it difficult for her to breathe. Charlie asks Zach about what happened to the young woman who was with Sue. Zach says that Sue came in alone. Of course the woman would be a spirit.

Later Charlie and Joel tell Sue the bad news that they can’t operate on the tumor without doing damage to her hard palate. The doctors ask Sue who they can call. The young woman mentions her son and Charlie asks if that is who they want to call. Sue nods yes and Joel wonders how he knew. Charlie lies and says he got that information from the admission chart. We learn the woman is Jen and is Sue’s sister and been with her 40 years. Jen died escaping Cambodia and the reason Jen is still with Sue is Sue had to eat her to survive. Jen also tells Charlie of Sue’s son and how she had him after she came to Canada but he was taken away from her. The son is now grown up and could take care of her and it would mean a lot to her.

Joel gets inspired by something Zach says about another patient and realizes he can use Sue’s scapula to reconstruct her hard palate. Joel goes over with the team what to do. Charlie says that Sue has an 8% chance of survival but believes Sue will live.

Just before heading into surgery Joel’s lawyer calls but Charlie needs Joel so he tells the nurse to call the lawyer back. It is a fascinating surgery seeing Charlie and Joel remove the mouth tumor. The good news is the two are successful in taking the whole tumor out. Charlie gets ready to take the scapula out when Joel get call from lawyer, who takes the call and wonders if he is going to trial

Sue is recovering in the ICU, Charlie tells her she will be ok and tells Jen that that she can leave. But Jen won’t as who will take care of her and watch over her. Later Sue’s son comes and tells his mom he is there for her and I got a bit teary eyed. And Jen spirit has left.

In the ambulance bay, Joel tells Charlie over cans of Heineken that video surveillance footage has cleared him so he won’t go to trial. But Joel still feels bad over killing a man. Charlie sits with him to lend an ear and a new bromance is born.

Zach

Mal has missed Zach and is all flirty with him about paint balling (euphemism for sex) but Zach is distant and brushes Mal off, who notices him limping funny. Zach patient is Bernice, a stripper complaining of abdominal pain and wants doctor note for workers comp so she won’t have to go back to the strip club. Bernice’s now ex-boyfriend is a bartender there and was cheating on her and scamming her and playing the same game with other girls there.

The ultrasound finds nothing and neither does her blood work comes. After Bernice throws up on Zach’s favourite pair of shoes, he asks what did she drink the night before. Zach realizes boyfriend poisoned her with antifreeze that has methanol. The treatment is an ethanol drip but Jackson says Hope-Zion doesn’t keep an ethanol drip so Zach gets him to find some or Bernice will go into liver failure.

Zach gives Bernice some vodka to counteract the methanol. Bernice sees that Zach is distracted and he admits he thinks he has prostate cancer. Zach had a biopsy two days ago and that is why he is distracted and distant. Bernice surmises he is worried about the side effects of treatment on his sex life. We see Zach get the results but we don’t know what it is yet but we see him walk the halls of Hope Z taking off his tie, lab coat, untucks his shirt and unbuttons it. We see a half naked Zach (nice body there Benjamin Ayers) pay Mal a visit in the on call room. Zach admits he was afraid to tell Mal that he thought he had cancer but tells her he is clean and the two proceed to get it on in the on-call room.

Bernice is also okay after getting the ethanol drip and Zach shares he will be okay too. Zach gives her the doctor note and tells her to call the cops to arrest her ex. Later, Zach goes back to Mal in the on-call room and the two cuddle.

Alex

A very pregnant Alex is about to step into a surgery with Maggie when Katz stops her. Katz is worried about the radiation in the operating room and how it might harm the baby. Alex insists she will be fine but Katz insists she takes it easy, doctor’s order and assigns her to do paper work. As Alex is doing said paper work, she tells Maggie that she is bored so Maggie suggests she go for a walk.

Alex ends up taking a hike in the woods and talks to Shahir who is a worry wort about her walking alone in the woods and asks her to be careful.

On her walk, Alex sees a golden retriever and a cry for help from a teen boy who is stuck under a huge log. Sam is the young teens and and his trusty dog is Farrow. Sam was out for a trail run the night before and storm blew down a tree onto him. Sam’s leg is broken so while Alex puts it in a splint gets him to tell a little bit about himself. Sam says he is allergic to peanuts and discusses things he likes such as Andy Samberg and talks about why likes running. Alex leaves to get better cell reception but before going gets Farrow to lie down on Sam to keep him warm.

Alex does find a signal and manages to call an ambulance before getting cut off. When Alex returns she finds Sam unable to stay awake as he is hypothermic. To keep him awake and his blood pressure up, Alex uses his epi pen. Eventually the epi pen does run out and Sam starts to fade so he asks Alex to tell his dad that he forgives him for leaving him but Alex is having none of it.

The ambulance does arrive and Sam is rescued. The paramedics want to take Sam to the closest hospital but Alex says that hospital don’t have the proper staff on hand to treat him, Before getting in the ambulance, Sam goes into cardiac arrest but eventually comes back and is taken to Hope Zion, after Alex convinces the EMT to do so.

Shahir will be operating on Sam for his spinal injury while Alex will deal with his leg and the two discuss the best course of action.

The surgery goes fine and when Alex emerges, Katz insists on a full body scan on Alex because of the stress of the day. During the scan, the baby is fine and healthy. We also learn the sex of the baby and Alex is having a boy (Erica Durance is having a boy too).

Alex is by Sam’s side when he wakes up and tells him is ok. Sam wiggles is toes to make sure. Sam’s mom is with him while he recovers and his wayward father comes to visit him too.

Later in doctors lounge, Alex tells Shahir that she is having a boy. Shahir offers congratulations. And while Alex works out her baby daddy drama, Shahir volunteers to do all the stuff the father of the baby would do during Alex’s pregnancy like going to lamaze classes with her. Alex happily accepts and when Shahir asks how mother and surgeon Alex Reid feels, Alex says she feels like herself.

Next week we get to meet Joel’s father and we see how contentious that relationship. Let’s see if that encounter might give Joel some perspective in being a potential father himself.

Saving Hope Season 3 Episode 14 “Trading Places” Recap

Tonight we finally got to learn more about Dr. Sydney Katz and it is about time. I was starting to get worried they were really under-utilizing Stacey Farber, whom I’ve been a fan since her days as Ellie on Degrassi: The Next Generation.

So let’s start with Dr. Katz.

Dr. Katz and Maggie

Alex and Maggie are treating a lesbian couple, Ruth and Nashama, from Montreal. Nashama is 33 weeks pregnant and has a possible appendicitis. There is also an issue with the baby, who has a condition where its lungs isn’t able to fully form properly so a balloon had to be inserted in its trachea to help the lungs develop.

As Alex and Maggie examine Nashama, Katz comes into check on her and it is very obvious that Nashama and Katz have a very contentious history as Nashama refuses to be treated by Katz.

Nashama then starts to feel abdominal pains and there are fears the appendix might have burst. So Alex and Maggie go in to remove the appendix, which is a success.

As Nashama recovers, her water breaks and her baby needs to be delivered. But Ruth says it is too early as the lungs haven’t full formed yet. But Maggie says there is no waiting and they need to first pop the balloon in the trachea and once the baby is delivered will put it on a ventilator. The catch is Katz is the best person for the surgery. Nashama refuses and rather fly in her doctor from Montreal. But Nashama is made to see reason that Katz is her best chance to save the baby.

Nashama is awake for the surgery albeit a bit loopy from whatever was given to her. It is revealed that Katz blabbed to Nashama’s parents that she caught their daughter kissing a girl. Nashama’s parents performed a the Jewish ritual of a Shiva effectively declaring their daughter is dead to them. Katz manages to deflate the balloon and is ready to deliver the baby but Nashama refuses to have Katz touch her baby. So Maggie is tasked to do so but the baby is breech. Katz apologizes to Nashama for blabbing and blames her youth for that indiscretion. Nashama lets Katz deliver her baby, a girl, whose lungs seem okay. We later see Nashama and Ruth enjoy their new daughter.

In the doctor’s lounge, Maggie tries to console Katz, who feels extremely guilty for betraying Nashama and blames herself for Nashama being shunned. Maggie asks about her upcoming wedding to Hershel. Katz tells Maggie that she doesn’t understand the pressures of being Orthodox and tells her how Hershel would declare his intent of wanting sex (he would throw his yarmulke on the bed).

But since Katz kissed Maggie, we suspect her next confession: she had a crush on Nashama when they were teenagers and was jealous of seeing her kiss another girl. But Katz decides to stay in the closet for now.

Later, in the on-call room, Katz admits to Maggie that she likes girls and the two start to kiss passionately. And so much for me thinking that Maggie was going to hook up with Dr. Dey.

Joel

Joel is trying to write a speech introducing his father, Dr. Barrett Goren, who is receiving the Bernard Taylor Award for his stem cell research. When Alex sees what he has wrote, it nothing much.

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

Joel goes to the Royal York Hotel to meet his dad for lunch. When Joel goes up to his room, a woman opens the door and Joel and the audience thinks that she is an escort. However, it turns out she was a massage therapist. While on their way to lunch, Joel asks about his 26-year old step mother. Barrett replies that they are getting a divorce. Joel is not surprised to hear this news and says that makes 5 failed marriages.

Nigel Bennel as Dr. Goren and Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

Barrett all of a sudden starts to feel abdominal pain and collapses near the St. Andrew Subway station (at least I think that was it – I used to live in Toronto). Joel goes searching for his dad’s insulin (he has Type 1 diabetes) but he says that he doesn’t need insulin as he has been cured. Joel grabs a taxi and heads to Hope-Zion.

Alex is there to meet them. Barrett is surprised to see that Alex is pregnant and tells her that Gorens make terrible fathers and that Charlie is one lucky man. Joel tells Alex that he didn’t his dad about the baby because the uncertainty in paternity.

We learn that Barrett has pancreatitis and his pancreas is completely black. Alex has to go in and remove all of the bacteria and hope it doesn’t spread and shut down other organs. Alex also informs Joel that his dad’s blood sugar levels are normal and they’ve taken several tests.

Joel then realizes that his dad used his stem cell research to test on himself to cure his diabetes and lectures his dad on the dangers. Barrett tells Joel that he is just like his mother. Joel doesn’t want his dad to bring up his mom again since he was the one to abandon them. It looks like Joel and his mom are pretty close.

Before going into his surgery, Barrett needs to complete his award speech and wants Joel to deliver it but he refuses. Barrett then asks Alex, who agrees despite her not being good at public speaking.

As Barrett is being rolled into surgery, Barrett gives Alex money for the baby as he believes Joel will do nothing. Alex tries to refuse but Barrett insists.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

At the awards ceremony, both Alex and Joel are surprised to see each other. Joel also tells Alex that he knows his dad gave her money for the baby. Alex says that she isn’t keeping it.

The ceremony starts and Joel starts to give the speech that his dad wrote (something about Greek or Roman mythology) but puts it away and instead shares a story about the first time he saw his dad in his element and how he was a good, generous, kind doctor. Joel then announces that his dad has donated the prize money to start a street clinic at Hope-Zion. Joel thanks his dad for that generous donation on behalf of Selina.

Afterwards, Joel knows that his father wasn’t the best. Alex agrees and says her parents weren’t great either. Joel continues on to say that he doesn’t know if he will be good either but he knows he wants to be a father to Alex’s baby.

I was a little fearful that Alex might consider getting back together with Joel with that speech and they way the two were in this episode, I feared it might happen until I understood the point of Charlie’s storyline tonight.

Charlie

Charlie is treating Iris Pratt (Janet Leigh Green) who has come in with a torn rotary cuff. Her grandson, Cameron, is with her. Iris likes to play tennis but Charlie says it isn’t a tennis injury. Iris explains that she was just clumsy and fell.

When Charlie goes through her MRI and x-rays with Zach and both see several hairline fractures. Charlie, and me, suspect elder abuse. The suspicions are heightened after Charlie talks to Cameron, who seems agitated at his grandmother for not being careful when running after the phone.

Charlie goes to talk to Iris about his suspicions but only after Cameron leaves the room. Iris denies it and just says that she is clumsy and that Cameron needs her. There is a commotion outside with Cameron yelling at other patients demanding a phone and gets quite aggressive and is taken away into the psych ward. Dr. Dey tells Charlie that Camera is manic depressive and is supposed to be taking lithium to help his condition. Dey also tells Charlie that Cameron has no history of violence. Charlie wants to call social services but Dey thinks it is better not to separate Cameron from his grandmother.

During Iris’ surgery to repair her rotator cuff sees that the bone is thin and spongey. Charlie suspects something and gets a toxicology screen done on Iris and asks Dey to come to the surgery. Charlie informs Dey that Cameron has been giving his grandmother his lithium that causes bone loss and clumsiness. This convinces Dey to commit Cameron.

When Iris wakes up, Charlie tells her about Cameron but Iris refuses to give up on her grandson and he thrives under her and wouldn’t if he stayed with his mom. Dey eventually allows Iris to see Cameron and grandmother and grandson have a sweet reunion.

Throughout Charlie’s storyline, a spirit named Henry needs his help in finding his body. Each time Henry thinks he has found his body it turns out to be wrong boy. The two go to the morgue to see if his body is in there. They go and take a look at the last door but Henry feels his heart beat and goes to reunite with his body and eventually his family and friends.

However, Henry is outside a surgery where a girl is receiving his heart. Charlie tells Henry the bad news that he died, Henry doesn’t know what to do or where to go and is sad that he will never see his parents again. When Charlie mentions that Henry has done the greatest thing someone could do and that is be an organ donor, this allows Henry’s spirit to be at peace and leave.

Without revealing the identity of the donor, Charlie gather the girl who received Henry’s heart and the two boys that got his kidneys together to talk about how their donor was a great guy and his favourite baseball player was Derek Jeter. It seems the tree kids might know Henry and are thankful to him for giving another chance at life.

Alex sees all of this and looks especially moved when Charlie starts to play Go Fish with them.

And from the look on Alex’s face, she sees that Charlie would make a great dad and she might just be falling in love with him again.

Update on the Alex Baby Daddy Poll: Charlie: 46.50% Joel: 44.59% Clark Kent: 9%.

So it seems that some of you think that Charlie would make a great dad too!

Let’s hope that Charlie isn’t committed to the psych ward based on next week’s episode.

Remember Giselle from episode 12 and 13 and how I predicted that she might get adopted by Dawn? From CTV’s episode description for episode 15 “Remains of the Day” it seems that prediction might come true.

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance), Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross), and Dr. Rian Larouche (Danso Gordon) could use a little help studying for their surgical board exams – it seems a good teacher goes a long way. So when a high school English teacher comes in for treatment, Alex finds herself receiving a few life lessons of her own. Dr. Joel Goran’s (Daniel Gillies) consumed with a patient’s vanishing bones. A patient, who is very particular with her lists has Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) working through a long list of medical reasons as to why she could be flatlining in the OR. Dr. Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden) and Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) have proof of their own – and Charlie has to come up with a defense that doesn’t rely on the help of a ghost. The future of a teenage girl rests in Dawn’s hands – and a future she doesn’t know if she’s ready for – weighs heavy on her heart. | Writer: John Krizanc | Director: Eleanor Lindo | Guest Stars: Krystin Pellerin (REPUBLIC OF DOYLE), Paul Braunstein (HAVEN), and Olivia Scriven (DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION).

Saving Hope Season 3 Episode 15 “Remains of the Day

We are in the home stretch of season 3 and tonight we might have a winner in our Alex baby daddy sweepstakes and a prediction I made about Dawn in episode 13 might just be coming true so let’s start with Hope Zion’s Chief of Surgery.

Dawn

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Dawn returns to her office to find Giselle there sitting on her couch eating a cracker. Dawn wonders why she isn’t in school and Giselle claims it is a Pro-D Day. Dawn calls Mr. Perez, Giselle’s social worker to come in and take her off her hands and into another foster family. It seems that Giselle has run away from another foster family.

While waiting for the social worker to come, Dawn finds Giselle in the ICU sleeping in the same bed that Leila, her foster mom that died, was in. Mal doesn’t want to disturb and Dawn agrees as then she will know where to find Giselle when Mr. Perez shows up.

It seems that Mr. Perez is taking his time coming to Hope-Zion and when Dawn goes to find Giselle she is no longer in the bed in ICU so she gets Mal to call in a code yellow.

Eventually, Dawn finds her in the hospital cafeteria and she splits her sandwich with Giselle. Giselle wonders why Dawn is always alone and why she doesn’t have friends. Dawn says she has friends but when she can’t explain why she isn’t eating lunch with them but with her, Giselle offers that they must be busy. Dawn says that is the reason.

Mr. Perez does show up and the two talk about Giselle’s foster family situation. Hearing this Dawn suggests that perhaps she could be Giselle’s foster parent. When Mr. Perez goes through the process that includes home visits, which means Dawn will have to cut down her hours, she realizes that she can’t be Giselle’s foster parent as she watches her eat a snack in her office. So Dawn tells Mr. Perez to take her away while she hides in the office next door.

While Dawn is using her dust buster to suck up the crumbs left behind by Giselle, she comes to a realization and runs to catch Mr. Perez and Giselle. Dawn offers to take Giselle for the week while Mr. Perez finds a foster family.

I am going to skip Dawn introducing Charlie to Giselle till later but want to get to the scene where Dawn is driving Giselle home. A part of me thought a terrible car accident was going to happen but thankful it didn’t. But Dawn gives Giselle a look that I can’t tell if she regrets taking the young teen in or is thankful she made the right decision.

Maggie

Sydney meets up with Maggie in the elevator and it looks like her engagement to Hershel is broken. I made this assumption because Sydney got a gift card to a seafood restaurant as an engagement gift and she wants to give it to Maggie. Maggie thinks it is a kiss off gift after what happened to them but Sydney assures it isn’t. Sydney just wanted to give her something to treat herself. Maggie would love to accept but she is sort of allergic to seafood. As Maggie leaves the elevator, Sydney wonders how someone can be sort of allergic to seafood.

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Mac Fyfe as Dr. Dey

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Mac Fyfe as Dr. Dey

Later on, it seems that Sydney gave her gift card to Dr. Dey who promptly asks out Maggie. Maggie wonders about Dey’s vow of celibacy, which he says is over. Maggie agrees to go out with him and when they leave for their date, Sydney sees that Dey is going to use the gift card to take Maggie out. Sydney looks a little hurt but Maggie invites Sydney to join them. You can tell that Dey totally doesn’t want Sydney to join them but is a gentleman and says she is welcome. At first, we think Sydney is going to say no but she accepts their invitation.

Alex and Joel

Alex’s patient is Bill Halperin, a remedial high school English teacher. Bill fell off the stage while rehearsing as the Ghost of Hamlet’s father. Bill has some bruised ribs and when Alex goes to examine him, Bill recites some of his lines and this triggers a memory that Alex had while in the spirit world or even a childhood memory of her father’s suicide. Alex hand starts to cramp and ends the exam. Meanwhile, Bill’s students are outside, very much worried for their teacher.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Erica Durance as Alex Reid and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Alex goes to Charlie for a consult and tries to open up to him about what he say but Larouche calls him into surgery (more on that later). We later see Alex use Maggie’s name to get her dad’s medical files.

Because Charlie was busy, Joel is brought in to consult on Bill and it is determined that surgery is required. While in surgery, Joel sees something interesting and brings in Dr. Rocca for a consult. Joel believes that Bill has vanishing bone disease and while Bill recovers, Joel tells him the news and that it requires more surgery to fix the problem. Bill wants the surgery and Joel goes off to book the ER. Alex takes his vitals and Bill having difficulty remembering his lines. But when Bill calls Alex Julia, Alex believes that something else could be wrong with Bill.

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

When Alex tells Joel this, Joel seems a bit peeved at Alex as he has booked an OR for Bill and now Alex wants to call in a psych consult because their patient called her the wrong name. But Dey was brought in to see Bill and he rushes out his room to grab the doctors. Bill is having seizures.

Meanwhile, Bill’s students are waiting news on their teacher. It is clear they want the play to go on but without their leader that inspires them, they don’t see it as being possible.

Now Joel is at a lost as to what is wrong with Bill so he works together with Alex, Rocca and Shahir to see what could be wrong. Shahir says they will know for sure if they do a brain biopsy. During the biopsy, Bill is awake and shares with Alex that Julia was his wife and she died of breast cancer.

The result of the brain biopsy reveals that Bill has a terminal illness because of a genetic disease that I cannot pronounce or even spell the name of but it apparently causes lesions in the brain, seizures and bones to easily break. Joel and Alex break the news that he won’t live past 50.

To cheer Bill up, Alex wheels him to the hospital’s lobby. There his students put on Hamlet, with a female Hamlet. Bill’s stage manager, takes over the role of the Ghost. Through tear-filled eyes, Bill looks on proudly as his students perform the play.

Charlie

Zach brings in Charlie to the ER to treat a woman that veered in front of his train from Georgetown with her bike. Charlie wonders why Zach is coming from Georgetown as he doesn’t live in that area. My guess Zach was coming from Mal’s. Wonder why these two are keeping their relationship a secret? A question to be answered in another episode.

Back to Charlie. His patient is the cyclist. Her name is Elaine and her leg is in awful shape. Also, Elaine has OCD and is very particular in how her care should be.

During Elaine’s surgery (it was the surgery that Charlie was called into when Alex asked him for a consult), things are going well with Maggie and Larouche helping. Elaine’s spirit appears and she gets all panicky because the doctors aren’t boy girl boy. Charlie tells Elaine that is how things are going to be but Elaine’s vitals start to spike and only calms down once he gets Larouche and Maggie to change places. Of course, Larouche and Maggie don’t quite understand why but Charlie tells the two that surgeons need to learn how to operate from different sides of the table. A very plausible reason.

When Maggie removes the clamps off of Elaine’s leg, Elaine all of sudden starts to complain of blindness. Charlie asks Larouche and Maggie what could cause blindness during surgery and the two offer a reason so they move Elaine to see that helps. Unfortunately, Elaine still complains of blindness and all of sudden starts to suffer migraines. Charlie tries to get her to breathe but Maggie thinks Charlie is talking to her. Charlie then realizes that Elaine is having a stroke due to a hematoma pressing on her brain. Shahir is immediately called but he taking forever to arrive so Charlie performs neurosurgery thanks to how Elaine’s spirit is clutching her head.

After the surgery is complete, everyone from Maggie, Larouche, Shahir and Dawn all wonder how Charlie knew Elaine was having a stroke before any of the machine’s picked up on it. Charlie doesn’t want to elaborate but Dawn make him present his course of treatment in front of other doctors by going through the surgery video.

While Charlie looks over the video, he tells Elaine he look crazy. Larouche and Maggie come in and have to ask how Charlie knew. Since the two doctors were asking Charlie for a practice oral board exam, he sets them to watch the video and come up with their own theories as to why.

At this meeting, Charlie looks like he is about to reveal his secret as he starts off how he can see things other people can’t. Dawn seems intrigued at this as I think she set Charlie up so he would confess what he can do. But Charlie is saved by Maggie and Larouche who offer very plausible medical reasons as to how Charlie was able to diagnose Elaine. Later on (during the scene when Charlie meets Giselle), Dawn tells Charlie she doesn’t believe Larouche and Maggie’s reasons for one minute and that it was Charlie’s supernatural gift that helped him.

In the ICU, Charlie tells Elaine that she had two strokes. One that cause her bike to swerve into the train and the other during surgery. Charlie says that it won’t happen again as they know why it happened (a hole in her heart) and they can fix it. To help Elaine with her OCD, Charlie gently nudges her to try and eat three delicious looking dumplings. At first Elaine looks like she won’t be we later see her stab one of those dumplings with a chopstick and eat one.

Later on in the doctor’s lounge as Charlie is clearing up the Chinese takeout, Alex comes to see him. Alex tells Charlie that she used Maggie’s name to get her father’s medical record. Charlie said he could have done that for her. Alex knows that he could have but shares what she found out. Her dad had lung cancer that had spread, possibly to his brain that most likely lead him to commit suicide. Alex needs to believe this is true and Charlie says it probably as has who would ever leave her.

Then the baby starts to kick and Charlie asks if he can feel it too. Alex takes Charlie’s hand and places it on her pregnant belly and puts her hand over his as they feel the baby kick. All of a sudden, Alex has a vision of the beach again but this time she sees Charlie who picks up the baby and starts to play with it.

The look on Alex’s face make me think that she knows that Charlie is the father of her baby and the looks that they share, it is clear that the two are in love again. And all is right in the world.

I am going to keep on updating you guys on the Alex Baby Daddy poll until the show for sure reveals who is the daddy. So here are the results this week: Charlie at 50.53%, Joel at 41.58% and Clark Kent is at 7.89%.

Till next week where we see Charlie and Alex go out on a coffee date yay!

Just when I was really hoping the love triangle between Charlie-Alex-Joel wsa actually over, it seems it is just heating up. But before we get to that, tonight’s episode of Saving Hope got a little bit personal for me so lets start there.

Maggie and Zach

Maggie is checking up on Paulette, a woman who in a RV accident with her husband, Mike. The two of them were on their way camping in Churchill, Manitoba to see the Northern Lights.

Zach is treating Mike, who has a bad scratch on his arm. When Mike starts coughing violently, Zach goes to hear his lungs and doesn’t like what he hears so wants to do a chest x-ray. Mike tells him not to bother that he knows he is dying and doesn’t want his wife to know.

Later, Zach shows Maggie the results of Mike’s chest x-ray and he has stage 4 lung cancer and tells her that Mike doesn’t want Paulette to know. Mike just wants to use the remaining time has with the love of his life smiling and not worrying about him. Paulette is oblivious to what is going and is happily making plans to resume their road trip.

Mike insists on leaving and before they can get out of the ER, he collapses. Even after all of that Mike refuses to tell Paulette and Zach’s and Maggie’s hands are tied as they must honour their patient’s wishes. Every time Paulette wants to know what is going on, Zach says nothing but we see that he is having a hard time not to. Eventually, Zach gets Mike admitted so he is no longer his patient and therefore is someone else’s problem. But Paulette keeps on pestering Zach to know what is wrong with her husband. So without betraying Mike, Zach has Paulette follow him to where Mike is receiving some sort of treatment for his lungs from Maggie.

With the truth out, Paulette wants to know ever course of treatment there is for Mike. Unfortunately, even with chemotherapy, Mike has a 10% chance of survival and that when he diagnosed, his cancer had already spread.

Maggie tells Mike and Paulette that he collapsed because of a clot in his lungs and it will need to be removed. Mike knows that he is dying and their road trip is dead and is saddened how he will never see the Northern Lights.

Zach isn’t happy that Mike refused to tell his wife as their lives could have been lived much differently. Maggie wants to know what is wrong with Zach and he later confesses he went through the same thing with his father. He was 17 when he dad was diagnosed with lung cancer but Zach’s parents decided not to tell him so he was your regular teenager: staying out late, sleeping in and arguing with his dad. Zach tells Maggie that if had known, he would have spent the last year of his dad’s life differently.

The surgery to remove Mike’s clot is a success but Maggie tells Paulette that it will probably return and it is unlikely he will make it through the night. Paulette then goes to Mike’s bedside to be with him. Zach sees this and tells Maggie that he wants to do something for the couple.

With the help if Mal, Zach simulates the Northern Lights in Mike’s ICU room. Mike is overwhelmed by what he sees and has tears in my eyes. As Mike continues to rest, Maggie asks if Paulette will continue on the road trip with their beast of an RV, she answers that she will and that Mike said that he will be waiting for her when she arrives. And I got a bit misty-eyed. To get a bit personal here, this story line really got to me because I lost my mother to lung cancer when I was 19 but I did know she had it and I did get a chance to say goodbye, which is something Maggie tells Paulette and how not many people get that chance.

Joel

Joel’s patient is a paraplegic, Brianna, who is also a bride-to-be. Brianna is part of Joel’s and Shahir’s mobility study and their is discussion of some surgery on her legs which give Brianna hope that she might be able to walk down the aisle. Joel tells her not to get her hopes up so high and if anything Brianna will be using a walker to go the down aisle.

While getting coffee, Shahir wonders about using exoskeleton legs to help Brianna walk Joel doesn’t want to use that option yet. Talk turns to Alex’s birthing plan and Shahir wants to know if Joel wants to be on the call list. Later on, Joel tells Shahir that he wants to be the first person called when Alex goes into labour.

In the physiotherapy room, Brianna is attempting to walk using the rails but she falls and dislocates her shoulder. While mending her shoulder, Brianna tells Joel why it is important for her to walk down the aisle, she needs to prove something to her father and friends and it is her fault that she can’t walk. You see Brianna drove drunk but thankfully only she was hurt. Joel then hears how Brianna’s leg cramped up and that is why she fell.

Later, Brianna’s father isn’t happy with Joel as he tells him that his daughter needs to accept that she can’t walk. Joel turns the tables and tells her dad that he needs to accept Brianna.

Joel treats Brianna’s leg with some botox as that will help her brain to stop sending messages to her leg to contract. Joel then mentions that they want Brianna to use the exoskeleton legs so she walk down the aisle and he reunites her with her dad. We then see Brianna successfully walk with the robot legs and her dad comments that it was like watching her take her first steps all over again and how proud he was and is. Joel sees this scene and from the look on his face gets inspired to do something. More on that after we talk about…

Charlie and Alex

Alex’s dad starts off with her pronouncing a man dead. As the day goes along, we see the man’s spirit hanging around Alex.

Alex and Charlie’s patient is Travis, whose leg got dislocated from a mugging gone wrong. Also on Travis’ leg is an ankle monitor as he set to go to jail in three days time. When Alex uses an ultra sound to see what is in his stomach, Travis gets all nervous and he really needs to leave. But Charlie needs to have him in surgery to fix his leg and for Alex to fix something on her end.

During the surgery, Alex and Charlie are working really well together, they notice some bruising on his legs and abdomen. The two start complementing each other and there is definite chemistry there as the two look at each other. When the spirit of Alex’s patient is outside the OR, Charlie goes to speak to him. The spirit says he has something to give back to Alex and starts saying things like “I will never let you go” over and over again and doesn’t remember where he knows it from but knows it is connected to Alex. Later on the spirit starts to quote some bad habits of Charlie’s and realizes that Charlie is the person he is talking about and now knows what he needs to do.

We learn that Travis is a drug mule and wanted to smuggle in drugs to prison to make some money to send back to his pregnant girlfriend.

One of Travis’ drug package might have burst in his stomach so Alex, with the help of Larouche go in and start to remove a lot of bags of cocaine. Unfortunately, one of the bags that Alex takes out and bursts open. Alex is scrambling to remove the rest of the bags of drugs and when she does, Larouche and she go in to get drugs out of his system.

When Travis wakes up, Dr. Dey is there to tell them him to folly of his plan and if he was found with drugs, his three sentence would have gotten much longer. Dey offers to help Travis.

Later on, Charlie and Alex meet up and her hand starts to bother her again. Charlie goes to take a look at it and starts to rub her hand gently. While he does that, Alex has a memory of her time in the spirit world with Charlie where the two “kissed”. When Alex comes out of her memory, she asks Charlie out for a coffee and we see such love in both of their eyes. But first, Charlie needs to meet

up with the spirit and will catch up with Alex later.

In the morgue, the spirit gets Charlie to open up the drawer where his body is but wonders where his clothes are. Charlie fed up with his games starts to leave until the spirit says what he has to give Alex is in his pocket of his jacket. So Charlie finds the jacket and inside is a note with Alex’s handwriting in it. As Charlie reads, he realizes it is Alex’s vows to him. The spirit is the taxi driver that they were in and we flashback to the Pilot. The taxi driver meant to return it but he never had anyone write such words of love to him. The taxi driver asks Charlie to return it to Alex and he promises he will and his spirit disappears.

As the episode ends, we don’t see Charlie and Alex happily reunite over returned vows, shared memories and coffee but with Joel going to a jewelry store to buy an engagement ring for Alex.

And from next week’s previews, Joel will ask his question and a spirit encourages Charlie to fight for Alex. So who will Alex choose? From our baby daddy poll, it seems a lot of you guys want the father to be Charlie, who has pulled quite a bit ahead of Joel.

From tonight’s episode, I truly believe that Alex will choose Charlie. What do you think?
