It is the penultimate episode of Saving Hope’s third season and we have a description and images for the episode entitled “Fearless”. Here is how CTV describes the episode:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) is asked on a ‘consult’ by the ladies at Hope Zion Hospital, and starts her day off with a great surprise. Later, while on rounds, Alex confides in Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) that she hasn’t been too honest with the women in her life. After an emergency lifesaving manoeuvre on a very chatty mother of two, Alex begins to wonder if it’s time for her to make an important call. Meanwhile, Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) has something he needs to ask Alex, but before he can find a private moment, a mini‐van with several Varsity hockey players comes rushing in – and it’s up to Joel, Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji), and a very high‐tech piece of equipment to save them. Dr. Sydney Katz’s fiancé comes into the hospital – but unbeknownst to Sydney and Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) – not for the reasons one might ever expect. Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) is visited by the Spirit of a young man who dispels primal and philosophical advice – prompting Charlie to consider some big actions of his own.

“Fearless” will air Wednesday, February 11, 2015 on CTV at 10pm ET/PT.

In a press released today, CTV has teased what is in store for our favourite doctors of Hope Zion as season 3 of Saving Hope concludes on February 18, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT.

Here is the description of the episode:

The Season 3 finale sees Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance), Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross), and Dr. Rian Larouche (Danso Gordon) face their Surgical Boards – and the biggest day in Alex’s career is also about to become the biggest day of her life. With potentially life-altering changes in store for the doctors at Hope Zion Hospital, the finale will leave viewers on the edge of their seats as the season comes to a shocking and dramatic end.

It seems the episode will probably have Alex giving birth but I am wondering what the tragedy would be? It obviously might feature a character’s death. I don’t really want to speculate but it could be Joel and that might allow him to experience the spiritual world. So who or what do you think this tragedy is? Or how do you think the season will come to as CTV describes it “a shocking and dramatic end”. Sound off in the comments.

Saving Hope Season 3 Episode 17 “Fearless” Recap

Before we start this recap, congratulations are in order to Erica Durance and her husband David Palffy as the actress and her husband welcomed a son on February 10, 2015. It was reported on EricaDurance.TV that the couple named their son Lochlan William Palffy.

Okay now on to the recap.

It is the last episode before next week’s season finale and I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get any movement on the Charlie and Alex front. The two barely interacted in this episode save for a brief period when Alex experienced Braxton Hicks contractions and Charlie made a joke about liking their album.

But that’s not to say nothing happened. So let’s begin.

Maggie and Sydney

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin

While Sydney is in the midst of wedding planning, unbeknownst to her, her fiancee Hershel shows up in the ER complaining about stomach pains and believe he is dying. Hershel doesn’t want Sydney to know he is in the ER and he also cannot see Maggie as per Jewish custom so Jackson is there to conduct the blood work. While Jackson is doing his thing, Herschel goes on and on about how Sydney never shuts up about Maggie and seems to know her very well.

Maggie does tell Sydney that Hershel is in the hospital and she goes to see him. Hershel’s test results seem to indicate that he might have cancer so Maggie needs to perform a biopsy to know for sure if he has lymphoma or not.

Thinking that he is dying, Hershel confesses to Sydney that he ate pork. Hershel thought he was going to a Kosher restaurant but it wasn’t and had brussel sprouts made with bacon and confesses he went back to the restaurant twice. Sydney is appalled and says she doesn’t know Hershel and walks out of the room. Maggie thinks that Sydney is using the pork thing as an excuse not to marry Hershel, which Sydney denies.

The result of the biopsy is negative for cancer but a PET scan reveals that Herschel has a tapeworm that has migrated to his naval cavity. GROSS. Good news is Maggie can pull it out through his nose which she does. Double gross.

While Hershel recovers, Sydney tells him that she can’t marry him. Hershel thinks it is because he broke Kosher law but Sydney says it is because she is gay. Hershel wants to know who else knows and Sydney says just him and Maggie; Hershel thinks the two are together. Sydney says that she can’t marry him because she is afraid of what the their community will think of her but she is also afraid of the life she will lead if she stayed. Hershel asks her to leave and reading between the lines pretty much says that she is a hypocrite for not forgiving him for the pork thing but being gay is way worse.

In the on-call room, Maggie comforts Sydney who feels like she is free falling.

Alex

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Stacey Farber as Sydney Katz

Dana grabs Alex on the pretext of a consult. While on their way, Dana asks how she is doing since she is very near to giving birth and also her board exams are coming up. Alex complains about all the paperwork she needs to fill out, how she needs to change her will and how she has to talk to her mom since she hasn’t told her she is pregnant.

When the two ladies arrive for the “consult” it is actually a surprise baby shower with balloons, cupcakes with inappropriate frosting (you thank Maggie who baked them while also studying for her board). Missing is Dawn who was called to a board meeting. Mal gives Alex the gift of a stroller and when Sydney asks if Alex is ready, she says she is not even close. But the baby shower gets gut short because of a motor vehicle accident that calls most of the doctors away except for Dana and Alex.

Alex realizes Dana stopped her from heading down to the trauma. Dana says she doesn’t need the stress but has a real consult for her. Alex is to perform thyroid cancer surgery on Theresa (Linda Kash), a difficult woman who does nothing but complain and belittle her kids and does so freely in front of them. Theresa pretty much emotionally abuses her daughter. When Theresa’s surgery get postponed a bit because of the motor vehicle accident, she gets very angry and hopes the kid dies (more on that later) so she can have her surgery.

During the surgery, Dana and Alex wonder how a woman like Theresa can talk about her kids in that way. Dana then asks why Alex hasn’t told her mom that she is pregnant. Alex explains that her mom started drinking after her dad died and there was a revolving door of not nice boyfriends that led her to raise her brothers by herself.

While talking to Theresa’s daughter, Christine about her mom’s surgery, Theresa has a complication; she has a hematoma and can’t breathe. Alex splits he throat open so she can breathe but Theresa needs Type O blood that the hospital doesn’t have much of because of the motor vehicle accident. Alex learns that Theresa’s other daughter is the same blood type but the two haven’t spoken in years but Alex gets Christine to call her sister in.

Lauren and Alex bond over having difficult mothers. Lauren shares how her mom disowned her after she got pregnant and has only seen her granddaughter Lucy twice since she was born and now she is five. But despite her mom being a monster, her words not mine, Lauren doesn’t want her to die and tells Alex to continue taking the amount of blood they need to save her.

Theresa ends being okay as Alex was able to remove the hematoma but a complication of the surgery resulted in her vocal cords being damaged and she can’t talk for a few weeks. Christina thinks it is a good thing. Theresa wakes up and Lauren goes to leave but Theresa wants her to stay. Lauren says if she stays, she wants her mom to listen to them as they let into her how she treated them affected them negatively and if she really wants her to stay to her that. Theresa nods that she does. Later we see the three ladies starting to mend fences as Lauren shows a picture of Lucy to Theresa on her phone. Seeing this inspires Alex to phone her mom.

Later, Dawn gives Alex her baby shower gift: a binder filled with all the paperwork that Alex needed to fill out like insurance papers and mat leave all prepared for her.

Joel and Charlie

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

Daniel Gillies as Joel Goren

As the motor vehicle accident, Zach notices the engagement ring Joel took out of his pocket. Joel wonders how Zach managed to get married since he is a busy ER doctor. Zach says that he shouldn’t take any advice from since he is divorced.

The accident rolls in and it involves two hockey players. One is Hayden and he complains that he can’t feel his legs but does have some pain on his spine, which Joel takes as a good sign but needs to get into surgery right away or he won’t walk again.

Hayden’s girlfriend, Cheeti, speaks to Joel and says his mom is on the way and asks about the status of his best friend Sean Danes.

Sean is the one that bumped Alex’s patient and unfortunately, he did die. Sean’s spirit appears to Charlie asking him to help save Hayden from paralysis as the accident was his fault as he was texting and driving.

When Joel is about to go in and operate on Hayden, Shahir bumps him because Hayden has a brain bleed. But Charlie figures out a way for Joel to get in an operate before Shahir.

Joel updates Cheeti about Hayden and tells her the bad news that Sean has died. Cheeti begs Joel not to tell Hayden or he will give up. Joel doesn’t want to but says he will tell Hayden after everything is over. But when Hayden asks about Sean, Joel doesn’t say anything just that he needs to prep him for surgery. Hayden believes Sean is dead but Joel lies and says he is okay.

The surgery to fix Hayden’s spine involves some high tech scanner that creates a 3D images that will help them complete a 4 hour surgery in two. As Joel operates, his phone rings (it’s Hayden’s mom, which Joel updates her on his condition). The point of this scene is to get Shahir to get Joel’s phone but instead pulls out the ring box, which allows him to voice his opinion.

Sean is a wise spirit. We learn that Sean was the enforcer on the hockey team and it was his duty to protect Hayden. Sean says fighting allows him to experience life and love also lets him do that. Sean asks is Charlie’s in love and if girl the knows it. Charlie respons that it is complicated. Sean says he loves someone but she doesn’t know it. It is Cheeti and he says he didn’t fight for her because of Hayden. Sean then tells Charlie that he has to fight for love and it was his mission in life to fight for Hayden. I was really hoping that Sean’s speech would inspire Charlie to go up to Alex and just lay a passionate kiss on her but alas that didn’t happen.

Hayden’s surgery is a success as he can move his toes. Joel tells Cheeti the good news this Joel tells ok what up with Hayden. We see Cheeti later by Hayden’s side and Joel sees the devotion and gets inspired to go ask Alex his question.

However, when Joel finds Alex in the doctor’s lounge, sees that she is crying. Alex hopes that Joel’s question isn’t too deep and tells Joel that her conversation with her mom, the first since Luke died didn’t go as planned. The only thing she wants is to give birth to a healthy baby boy and to be the best surgeon. When Alex asks Joel what it was he wanted to ask her, Joel hesitates for a moment but doesn’t propose and in fact says the question can wait.

And I breathe a sigh of relief. I am so glad that Joel didn’t propose but even if he did, I think Alex would have said no as I think she knows that Charlie is the One.

Next week is the season finale and it looks like Alex is going to give birth but Joel is with Zach at some military base and Charlie is seeing a white horse roam the halls of Hope-Zion. Sounds like we are in for quite a ride.

Next week is Saving Hope’s season 3 finale (sob!) I have to say that I’ve really liked this season. I thought the show jumped the shark by having Alex get stabbed and be in the spirit world, which I thought she might be for the whole season. But I loved have the show explore Alex’s aftermath of coming back from the world with fleeting memories. Didn’t like Alex and Charlie breaking up and her hooking with Joel. Erica Durance’s real life pregnancy necessitated Alex being pregnant too so that added more drama to the show. I also loved the growth of Dawn and the addition of Stacey Farber as Dr. Sydney Katz.

So in Episode 18 “All the Pretty Horses”, CTV describes the season finale thusly:

A devastating accident requires the help of Hope Zion Hospital’s doctors at an offsite army base, and Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) and Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) flip a coin to decide who will take the call. When Joel wins the toss, he and Dr. Zach Miller (Ben Ayres) depart for a heart‐pounding day as they attempt to save the life of a soldier in dire circumstances. Meanwhile, Charlie and Dr. Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden) work to save a victim of hypothermia, and it’s do or die time for Hope Zion Hospital’s surgeons-in-training when Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance), Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross), and Dr. Rian Larouche (Danso Gordon) finally face the future and their Surgical Boards. But for Alex, the biggest day in her career is also about to become the biggest day of her life.

All of the pictures are about Alex, Maggie and Rian taking their board exams and one of them clearly shows Alex going into labour.

“All the Pretty Horses” airs Wednesday February 18, 2015 on CTV at 10pm ET/PT.

[Warning! The following recap contains spoilers to Saving Hope’s season 3 finale. If you don’t want to know what happens then stop reading now!]

CTV teased that the season 3 finale of Saving Hope would be tragic and boy were they ever right.

So let’s dive right into it

Alex

Alex is getting her final checkup from Dr. Katz, with Shahir by her side. Shahir wants the three of them to wear Team Shalex (Shahir + Alex) t-shirts when it comes time for Alex to give birth, which apparently is a week from now.

Not only is Alex ready to pop. today is the day she, Maggie and Rian take their board exams.

As Alex goes to leave for it, she meets up with Joel, who is on his way to an emergency offsite with Zach (more on that later), gives her words of encouragement.

Danso Gordon as Rian Larouche

At the board exams, the written exam is over and now comes the oral examination part. As they await their instructions on part 2, three discuss the written test when Alex’s water breaks.

In the woman’s washroom, Maggie exams Alex and the good news she hasn’t dilated yet. Maggie thinks that Alex should postpone taking her boards until the next year. Alex doesn’t want to as she doesn’t want to be a new mom and a resident. So Maggie tells Alex that if her contractions become 5 minutes apart then it is time to head to the hospital to give birth.

Erica Durance as Alex Reid

We then see three doctors answer the same board question differently. And it really looks like Alex’s contractions are starting to get closer together but she wants to push through as she only has two more questions. In one room, the board asks her a question but it was during a contraction that it takes her a while to answer. Then in her last question, Alex is pushing through the pain and answering the question quite well and hilariously says thanks to board but she is leaving to deliver her baby.

Julia Taylor Ross as Maggie Lin and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

In the ambulance, Maggie is trying to call Joel but no answer (there is a reason why that is) and then calls Shahir to page Sydney. Charlie is also called. It should be noted that Maggie skipped out on her final board question to help Alex. Alex is also panicking as she isn’t ready to be a mom as she and Joel come from screwed families and Charlie is an orphan. Maggie assures her that everything will be fine.

While on their way to Hope-Zion, there is some complications as the baby’s shoulder gets stuck in Alex’s pubic bone but eventually Maggie does safely deliver a healthy baby boy.

When Alex, the baby and Maggie arrive at Hope-Zion, Sydney asks Maggie what procedure did she do to deliver Alex’s baby. When Maggie outlines what she did, Sydney informs her that she had just answered her final board question and has passed, much to Maggie’s delight.

I will get to the rest of Alex’s storyline after I recap what happened to Charlie and Joel.

Charlie

Charlie is sleeping in an empty office when he wakes up, he sees a white horse outside in the halls. Charlie’s patient is a young man who comes in pretty much frozen as he fell in a lake going after a guitar. When Charlie asks Graham why he fell in the river, he keeps on saying mystery. Charlie asks for Dawn’s help with Graham as it looks like his heart is frozen. While in surgery, everything with Graham’s heart goes fine but unfortunately three of Graham’s fingers or so frost bitten that it has to be amputated. Also during the surgery, Charlie gets a call that Alex is in labour. After the second call, Dawn gets Charlie to go while she finishes up with Graham’s surgery.

When Charlie goes to the ER to meet the ambulance, he sees the white horse again. And in the ambulance bay, Charlie tells Shahir that he feels something bad is going to happen. Alex and baby are brought in and Charlie and Shahir go to be with her. More on Charlie and Alex later.

Later as Graham recovers, Dawn finds him playing his guitar with his remaining fingers. Dawn learns that Graham wasn’t saying mystery but Misty his ex-girlfriend. Graham threw her guitar in the river but changed his mind and a whole set of comedy of errors occurred and he ended up almost frozen at Hope-Zion. Graham notes that Dawn seems sad and she says that her ex-husband just became a father (she thinks – she bet on Charlie as the baby daddy) and she is truly happy for him.

Joel

Charlie and Joel are called to the ER where Zach informs the two he needs an orthopedic surgeon to come with him to an army base to remove a mortal shell out of the gut of a soldier. Both men want to go so Zach tosses a coin that Joel wins.

Joel and Zach arrive via helicopter to the military base. I was afraid that Zach or Joel’s arm would get cut off. I thank ER for that thought as I will never look at a helicopter the same again after seeing Dr. Romano’s arm get cut off.

I digress. Joel and Zach get updated on the field medic, who gets them to turn off their cells as anything could trigger all the bombs around. We see the unexploded mortal shell sticking out of Sergeant Marcel’s gut. Zach and Joel discuss disarming the bomb but Marcel is the bomb expert. Marcel tells the men that anything can set the bomb off so they need to be careful.

Zach and Joel try and remove the bomb out of Marcel but it deeply embedded in his pelvic bone. So Marcel is carefully moved to the medical tent where Joel dismisses the field medic so it just Zach, Joel and Marcel. Zach and Marcel bond over both being fathers to boys while Joel works to drill holes in Marcel’s pelvis to free the bomb.

The drilling does work and Joel starts to chisel some bone away to make sure the bomb can be removed. Each time Joel hit that hammer, I really thought the whole thing would blow and the three of them would be dead. But Joel’s last hit caused something to happen that he orders Zach to get some more supplies. Marcel knows that Joel sent Zach away to save him from what Joel is about to do. Halfway to the bases medical facility, Zach realizes that too and orders to be brought back.

Just before Joel pulls out the bomb, he gives Marcel his St. Christopher necklace and Marcel gives him dog tags. Just before pulling out the bomb, Joel tells Marcel that he is in love with a woman (Alex) and that he thinks he is going to be a father.

Joel manages to remove the bomb and slowly moves out of the tent. While outside, Zach is there and the soldiers there try and get the bomb safely from Joel. All of a sudden, Joel sees a white horse (the same one that Charlie saw) galloping on the field and the bomb goes off and Joel is gone as we see blood splatter everywhere.

Charlie and Alex Reunite

In her hospital room, Charlie comes in and gives Alex some burger and fries. Charlie asks what the baby’s name would be. Alex tells Charlie that it is going to be Luke. Alex then asks Charlie if he would like to hold Luke and of course he says yes. As Alex hands over Luke to Charlie, she fully remembers her time in the spirit world with him. Alex tells Charlie this and even says that she wanted to have a baby with him. Charlie nods that she did indeed say that to him. Alex then declares her love for Charlie and he reciprocates.

We all knew that Charlie and Alex would reunite. This show is built around their love story and now that she remembers her time in the spirit world, it should make next season interesting.

Farewell Dr. Goren

As Zach returns to Hope-Zion with Marcel, who is going to be okay, Maggie wants to know where Joel is. We don’t hear Zach deliver the news but we see Maggie visibly upset and grieving the loss.

Zach goes to tell Alex and Charlie and again we don’t hear him say the news. Instead, we see Charlie go to Marcel, who gives Charlie Joel’s necklace asking him to give it to Joel’s family.

We see Dawn in her office, grieving over Joel’s death and we then see Jackson deliver Joel’s body to the morgue as we hear Alex tell Maggie, who is holding baby Luke, how she first met Joel.

Joel’s spirit then enters the room, looks at baby Luke then goes over to Alex and kisses her on the forehead. Joel then sees Charlie and asks him to watch over Alex and the baby. Charlie doesn’t say anything and the episode ends as Alex and Charlie just look at each other.

And so ends season 3.

With Daniel Gillies having two major roles on two TV series, we always knew one show had to give and I guess Saving Hope was that show. It’s really too bad that they killed Joel off but it probably needed to be done. I think the show tapped out of the love triangle storylines and the way that Charlie and Alex declared their love near episode’s end, it was obvious Joel’s time on the show had come to an end. So fans of The Originals will now have Elijah on a full-time basis.

I am interested in seeing what a season 4 of Saving Hope would look like now without Daniel Gilles’ Joel Goren.

Tell me what your thought of the season finale. Sound off in the comments. Do you think Joel had to die?

Erica-Durance-Saving-Hope After quite a literally explosive season 3 finale, the fourth season of Saving Hope is set to being in Toronto on June 1, 2015.

In a CTV press release, it summarize the show’s third season and teases what season 4 will look like:

Saving Hope’s emotional Season 3 finale saw life and death collide as Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) became a new mom, delivering a healthy baby boy named Luke Reid. In a shocking turn of events, the episode culminated in a devastating accident at an off-site army base, which saw the death of one of Hope Zion’s own. Season 4 picks up nine months after the devastating accident, as the Hope Zion staff continue to deal with the aftermath of the death of their colleague and friend, Dr. Joel Goran. Alex (Durance) is back at work following maternity leave, trying to balance motherhood and a busy O.R. Meanwhile, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) continues to be haunted by his ghost-seeing abilities and the looming question of whether or not he is Baby Luke’s biological father.

To fill in the void that Daniel Gillies left, the press release notes the show is adding Kim Shaw (The Good Wife) as Dr. Cassie Williams, a book smart intern learning how to practice medicine, not just read about it, and Max Bennett (Anna Karenina) as Dr. Patrick Curtis, a surgical fellow who has been filling in during Alex’s mat leave. Travis Milne (Rookie Blue) will also appear in a four-episode arc.

These three will join returning cast members, Durance, Shanks as well as Wendy Crewson, Michelle Nolden, Benjamin Ayres, Julia Taylor-Ross, and Huse Madhavji.

Missing from this list is Stacey Farber as Dr. Sydney Katz, who status is unknown of whether or not she will be returning. I recall that Farber got cast in a TV show that got picked up for the fall on a US network so it is possible that she will no longer be on the show. If that is true, that’s too bad. I felt there was more to explore with Dr. Katz and her relationship with Maggie. Another actor missing is Mac Fyfe, who played Dr. Dey. Personally, I didn’t connect with Dr. Dey so if he isn’t a recurring character on the show then I am fine with that. I hope the show brings back Kristopher Turner as Dr. Gavin Murphy.

Jason Priestly, Michael Shanks and Peter Stebbings are set to direct episodes this season.

Shooting is set to run through December 2015 with a premiere date yet to be determined but most likely sometime this fall.

We are one week away from the season 4 premiere of Saving Hope and CTV has released a description and images for the episode entitled “Sympathy for the Devil”:

Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) makes a splash on her first day back from maternity leave when she arrives at Hope Zion Hospital with a car crash victim she encountered en route. But things get messy for Alex when she’s forced to play nice with a new General Surgeon on call, the very charming, very British Dr. Patrick Curtis (Max Bennett, Anna Karenina). The day gets even more chaotic when Alex is called away to treat Ted Crenshaw (Travis Milne, ROOKIE BLUE), a convicted murderer brought in for emergency treatment of an ulcer. When complications arise in both cases, Alex has to race against the clock to save the lives of her patients. Meanwhile, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) is forced to babysit the car accident victim’s baby, and he begins to confront his feelings about the paternity of Alex’s child, all while juggling an insistent Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) who is looking for backup on his proposal for a new Alzheimer’s study. In the E.R., Dr. Zach Miller (Benjamin Ayres), who’s still reeling from the death of his friend Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies), launches headlong into a case when a patient is admitted with symptoms mirroring those of Ebola – putting himself and Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) at risk of exposure to the deadly virus.

Saving Hope Season 4 Episode 1 “Sympathy for the Devil” Recap

Welcome back to our Saving Hope recaps now in its 4th season! We have a bit of a time jump, approximately 9 months since we last saw our crew. We get new faces and some out of character behavior but one thing that is back is the central love story of Alex and Charlie so lets start with them.

Alex and Charlie

Michael Shanks as Dr. Charlie Harris and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Michael Shanks as Dr. Charlie Harris and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Alex is in bed and is wide awake, nervous for her first day back at work. Charlie wants to help her relax via sex but baby Luke interrupts their sexy times.

As the pair get ready for work and Alex giving the babysitter instructions, Charlie opens the mail to find Luke’s long form birth certificate, reminding him of the unknown identity of Luke’s paternity.

Alex prepares to say goodbye to her son and says to Luke to say good bye to daddy and we see Luke call Charlie dada. As they go out the door, Charlie tells Alex just to go slow and steady throughout the day.

Unfortunately, Alex’s day doesn’t go that way as she enters the Hope Zion ER on a gurney trying to save the life a young mother involved in a car crash. Naomi is more worried about her baby as she is the only parent her daughter, Felicia, has. Alex tells Naomi that Felicia is with Charlie.

Maggie and Zach welcome her back and assist Alex. One of the new faces, Dr. Patrick Curtis (Max Bennett) arrives to lend a hand and he and Alex butt heads over the best course of action after fluid enters Naomi’s belly. Alex wants to take her to the OR but Curtis wants to take her to imaging and Curtis wins out.

Alex asks Maggie about Curtis, whom she thinks is great. Both women find it odd that Dawn would hire another doctor with an accent and Maggie says that Dawn hired him because she couldn’t wait for Alex to come back from maternity leave. Later on, Naomi does need surgery and Alex asks Dawn to scrub in on Curtis’ surgery; Dawn says she can. Dawn didn’t have a major story line tonight except that she is learning Mandarin.

During Naomi’s surgery, we learn that Curtis is a thorough surgeon and plays by the book and by the rules and doesn’t stray from it. When Curtis has some difficulty in clamping off a leak in Naomi’s aorta, he doesn’t want to pass it to Alex but relents. When Alex does manage to close off Naomi’s aorta, we see that Curtis’ ego is bruised and gets all passive aggressive on Alex.

Meanwhile, Charlie tries to pass Felicia off to Jackson but the baby gets fussy so he takes her to the Joel Goran Fracture Clinic, named of course in memory of Joel Goren who, if you remember, was tragically killed in the season 3 finale. There Shahir hijacks Charlie’s time to try and get him to be part of his Alzheimer’s study that requires an orthopedic surgeon. Shahir wants Charlie to help him present in front of the funding board. However, the presentation is that afternoon so Charlie says no. Shahir is miffed and said that if Joel was still alive, he would have said yes. Before hand, Charlie gets Shahir to take the baby to the doctor’s lounge so a nurse can look after Felicia.

Later, Alex and Charlie meet up where she notes how much Hope Zion has changed since she has been away. Charlie then brings up Luke’s long form birth certificate. Alex realizes that it probably is time to learn who Luke’s father is but didn’t want to burst their little bubble they have been living in. Before any decision can be made, Alex is paged to help perform an awake surgery on a prisoner who was convicted of killing his wife.

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

The prisoner’s name is Tom Crenshaw (Rookie Blue’s Travis Milne) and during the surgery, Alex gets him to talk about himself so he can relax during iy. Unfortunately, Tom starts to feel the pain of having his guts opened so Alex is forced to do a tracheotomy (Tom can’t be intubated) so he can be under for the surgery. Alex manages to repair the ulcer in his abdomen.

However, we see Tom’s spirit in an orange jumpsuit in the lobby of Hope Zion. Charlie sees him and Tom tells him that he is innocent. Charlie is distracted when he sees Naomi’s spirit looking for Felicia. Charlie leaves Tom and brings Naomi to Felicia. We learn that Naomi adopted Felicia and is worried what will happen to her baby. Charlie says that she will be placed in the system. The nurse looking after Felicia says that the foster system gets a bad rap and tells Charlie that any one that takes on parenting a child whether it is their child or not is a hero in her book. We can see Charlie taking this to heart.

As Shahir goes into his presentation, Charlie agrees to be part of this study after learning that the reason why Shahir is so passionate about the study is that his grandmother was recently diagnosed with the disease. At the funding meeting, Charlie assists in demonstrating the benefits of Shahir’s study and we learn that he got the funding.

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis

Later on, Curtis tells Alex that Naomi is going to be okay. When Alex asks if Naomi has seen Felicia, Curtis says no because children aren’t allowed on the ward. However, we see Curtis bring Felicia to Naomi. So Alex’s influence is rubbing off on Curtis so he’s not so by the book after all.

As for Tom, he starts to pull out his breathing tube but there were some complications in trying to calm Tom down that results in Alex having to put him in a medically induced coma. Alex tells Curtis pretty much that this isn’t her first coma rodeo.

Zach and Maggie

Benjamin Ayers as Dr. Zach Miller

Benjamin Ayers as Dr. Zach Miller

Alex notes how Zach has changed, which is into some sort of horn dog. Zach broke up with Melanda 3 months ago and she transferred out of Hope Zion 6 weeks ago. Zach is now dating Selena, a hospital clerk.

Julia Taylor-Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin

Julia Taylor-Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin

Maggie treats Viv, who came into the ER complaining about stomach pain and vomiting. Maggie learns that Viv recently came back from a trip to the Ivory Coast and Zach goes into high alert thinking it is Ebola.  Viv went to the Ivory Coast to realize her childhood ream of seeing pigmy hippos before she turned 50. Viv’s boyfriend, Sam, encouraged her to realize her dream but she before she went on the trip, she broke up Sam because he is 18 years younger than her. Even though Sam said the right things that the age gap doesn’t bother him nor that he wants kids, Viv says that Sam doesn’t realize what he wants until he doesn’t have it. Viv thinks she is going to die alone.

Later when Viv starts to have seizures, Maggie and Zach have issues with their protective gear so Zach enters without it and saves Viv. Maggie thinks he has a death wish but Zach says he did what he did to save Viv.

As Viv wakes up we see that Sam has kept vigil outside her isolation room. In Love Actually style Sam has several message written on a card that proclaims that Viv is his future. That romantic gestures really makes Viv hope that she will be okay and she will be. Viv doesn’t Ebola but contracted parasites from the pygmy hippos. We later see Sam and Viv cuddling in her hospital bed.

At the end of their shift, Maggie thanks Zach for a great job and says she misses Joel too and if he wants to talk, she is there. But Zach makes a quip of her hair and leaves. Something tells me these two will get together at some point this season.

Episode End

Alex turns down Maggie’s offer for a drink so she can go home to baby Luke. When Alex gets home, Charlie tells her that he doesn’t care about doing a paternity test. It doesn’t matter who Luke’s father is as long as he is Alex’s. Alex says that Luke is theirs and she loves Charlie even more. Charlie wants to pick up where they left off in the morning but a sleeping Luke wakes up. Charlie goes to take care of Luke, who is looking all cute standing up in his crib. While trying to get Luke to go back to sleep. Tom’s spirit appears in Luke’s room pleading with Charlie to help prove his innocence. Charlie is shocked to see Tom there and wants him to leave but Tom says that since Charlie is a bone doctor that he can help prove the ME lied on the stand. Before Charlie can get a word in edgewise, Alex comes into the room to spend time with her son.

So the spirits are no longer confined to the walls of Hope Zion but now can follow Charlie anywhere. I wonder if Charlie will tell Alex about this since she is aware of Charlie’s gift.

And do you think we will learn the identity of Luke’s father or are you like Charlie and don’t care as long as the three of them are a family. Vote in the poll below and sound off in the comments.

CTV has released tons of images for Saving Hope’s second episode of season 4 and while the description below makes no mention of Travis Milne’s Tom Crenshaw, his character is featured heavily in the photos.

Here is the synopsis for “Beasts of Burden”

Back from maternity leave for just two days, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) is given the privilege of assisting renowned surgeon Dr. Clara Levine (Kate Lynch, THIS IS WONDERLAND). When Alex begins to question Dr. Levine’s surgical decision she quickly finds herself on the wrong side of the operating table, replaced by the ever-charming and ever-tactful Dr. Patrick Curtis (Max Bennett, Anna Karenina). After seven surgeries on a leg that is showing zero improvement, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) is given the unenviable task of convincing his patient that, in the face of spiraling self-medication and the very real possibility of a lifetime of pain, sometimes we can only move forward when we give up what’s holding us back. Meanwhile, when an alcoholic advertising executive wanders in off the street with a head wound, Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross), who’s weighing the very real possibility of leaving Hope Zion Hospital, does everything in her power to put her patient in detox in the hopes of making things right.

“Beast of Burder” airs this Thursday October 1, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT.

This week’s Saving Hope, we pick up the next day after the last episode with….

Charlie

Charlie goes to see a comatose Tom in the hospital and reams him out for coming into his home. Alex walks in and wonders what’s up and why he didn’t come to bed. Charlie passes it off that he has lot on his mind and leaves to say he has to meet another doctor.

SH4_EP402_D5_KW_0167-1024x683Later, Charlie is treating Dean who has a severely damaged leg that was crushed when a forklift landed on it When Charlie asks about pain medication, Tom appears and apologies for coming to his home.

In the morgue, Tom apologies once again and Charlie only agrees to help if it mean getting him out of the hospital but it has to be on his terms.

Back to Dean, Shahir is testing his leg for nerve damage and tells Charlie it is best to amputate or Dean will continue to self medicate the pain.

Charlie’s tells Dean the bad news but he doesn’t take it well and wants a new surgeon that will keep his leg.

Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris and Travis Milne as Tom Crenshaw

In the elevators, Charlie pretends to be on his cell phone while he talks to Tom’s spirit, who offers to find out what is really scaring Dean. Tom reports back to Charlie that Dean is hiding his pain from his wife because he is proud. Tom shares when his wife, Amy, killed herself, he didn’t want to show weakness by crying over her death. Instead his pride caused him to look guilty and ruined his life.

At the hospital cafe, Charlie talks to Dean gets him to admit to being afraid of not being able to provide for his family. Charlie manages to convince Dean to have the surgery to amputate his leg as that will help him live his life again. Later we see Charlie showing Dean and his wife a possible prosthetic leg.

Once again at the morgue, Charlie tells Tom that he has asked for Amy’s x-rays and wants to know what happened. Tom shares that Amy tried to hang herself two years ago and kept that suicide attempt a secret. The medical examiner said that the broken bone in Amy’s neck was consistent to abuse than hanging. Tom says that medical examiner has had cases overturned. Charlie asks if Tom killed his wife; he says no and that he loved her.

Maggie

We learn that Dr. Sydney Katz has gone to a hospital in Cleveland and recommended Maggie for a job there. Maggie is tempted and asks Alex for advice who says that it might not be a bad idea to take something out of town as staff jobs hard to come by.

In the ER, Maggie finds Zach on one of the beds talking about a fondue kids party gone bad. Maggie shares her thoughts about possibly leaving Hope-Zion and missing her friends. Zach shares a study that when someone leaves a workplace, they are forgotten within 2 days.

Jackson interrupts so Maggie can see a patient with a cut on her forehead. Natalie is all skittish and doesn’t want help but eventually allows Maggie to treat her cut. When Maggie tries to draw blood to do some tests, Natalie starts to freak out and gets violent. Maggie says its best for Natalie to come clean to say what she is withdrawing from so she can help.

We find out that Natalie is an alcoholic that has 35 drinks a week to calm her anxiety. Natalie tried to quick cold turkey but it didn’t help. Natalie reluctantly accepts Maggie’s help but she then starts to have seizures. When Maggie goes to treat Natalie, we learn that she is also addicted to pills.

We get Natalie’s full back story. Because of her addition issues, Natalie’s husband has left her and taken their daughter and she has lost her advertising job. Natalie’s parents and sister have passed away so she has no support system.

Later, Zach realizes that Maggie really is thinking about leaving and learns about the job in Cleveland and says if she does take it, he will miss her.

Maggie sends Natalie to detox and says she will be okay. However, Natalie checks herself out of Hope Zion and refuses Maggie’s help and leaves.

The Natalie incident and seeing Zach go off with Selena, has led Maggie to make a decision about the job in Cleveland.

Alex

Kate Lynch as Clara Levine and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Kate Lynch as Clara Levine and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Dawn is in a happy mood and gifts Alex with a surgery assisting Dr. Clara Lavine (Kate Lynch), a legend at Hope-Zion and someone that Alex admires. Side Note: Dr. Lavine is played by Kate Lynch and if you are a fan of Anne of Green Gables like I am, you may recognize her as playing Pauline Harris in Anne of Green Gables: The SequelEnd Side Note

The patient is Cynthia, a vet who was kicked by a horse and needs her spleen removed. When Alex tries to say how Lavine inspires her, she is brushes Alex off to find her cell phone.

While scrubbing, Lavine asks Curtis to scrub in too. During the surgery, Lavine gets to know a bit more about Alex and starts to share fun stories about a young Dawn who trained under Lavine.

During the surgery, Alex suggests a better course of action to closing up the spleen but Lavine takes offense to it and asks Curtis to assist instead. After Lavine leaves, Alex is hurt that Curtis didn’t have her back but he tells Alex that she should have kept her mouth shut as Lavine has been performing surgeries before they were born and there is a hierarchy in the OR.

Later Alex checks up on Cynthia and Dawn thinks something is wrong if Alex isn’t with Lavine. Alex tells Dawn she will bring up her concerns with Lavine herself Dawn says Alex is lucky to work with Lavine as she can learn a lot from her.

Alex goes to see Lavine about Cynthia and shares her concerns about her blood pressure. Lavime dismisses these concerns and when Alex tries to get Lavine to listen, she gets offended at being questioned and orders Alex to follow her course of treatment.

When Alex goes to see Cynthia she notices bleeding in her surgical area and rushes to operate again but Curtis thinks it is career suicide to do so without Lavine’s knowledge. Alex is more concerned with saving Cynthia and needs Curtis to support her. Getting Cynthia into surgery gets more important when her chest tube gets dislodged.

During the surgery, Cynthia’s blood pressure is still low and realize that Lavine has knicked something during the original surgery. Alex and Curtis work together to find it and fix it. Lavine interrupts the surgery all pissed off and starts lecturing about it is not the place of a junior surgeon to defy a senior surgeon. Dr. Sharp, the anesthesiologist, tells Lavine to shut up and let Alex and Curtis save Cynthia’s life.

After the surgery is over, Alex says she will speak to Dawn and take the fall but Curtis says he has her back. At Dawn’s office, Alex is ready to take the consequences when Cynthia’s file is brought in. Dawn realizes the error that Lavine has made and shows her the file. Lavine can’t believe she could make such an error and when she and Dawn are alone, announces that it’s time for her to retire.

As Dawn sees Lavine pack up her office, she calls someone to pick up a cake.

Episode end

At Lavine’s retirement party, Shahir and Maggie say their good byes. As Lavine herself leaves, she tells Alex that she still has to prove herself to the male surgeons.

As Maggie leaves the party, she calls Dr. Singh to accept the job in Cleveland. I really hope that Maggie doesn’t leave. I don’t think I can take any more cast turn overs!

Later, at Tom’s bedside, Alex manages to get Chsrlie to say it is a ghost thing that is bothering him but he doesn’t want her to worry about anything. Both are getting used to the idea that they can share the ghost thing with each other and it is nice to see. It would have been nicer that Charlie told her what ghost business is bothering him but baby steps.

Back at the morgue, Charlie looks at Amy’s x-rays and from what he sees Tom has grounds for an appeal, which is music to his ears. Charlie says he will work on proving his innocence and once again says it has to be on his terms. Tom agrees to his terms.

Looks like next week we get introduced to more new faces.

Dejan Loyola as Dr. Dev Sekara, Kim Shaw as Dr. Cassie Williams and Parveen Kaur as Dr. Asha Mirani. Let's hope that Maggie gets the Fellowship that allows her to stay at Hope-Zion.

Dejan Loyola as Dr. Dev Sekara, Kim Shaw as Dr. Cassie Williams and Parveen Kaur as Dr. Asha Mirani.

More fresh faces join Hope Zion tonight as we get our first taste of Kim Shaw as Dr. Cassie Williams, Dejan Loyola as Dr. Dev Sekara and Parveen Kaur as Dr. Asha Mirani.

Before we get to the newbies, Dawn calls in Patrick, Alex and Maggie and other doctors of Hope Zion to her office. Dawn starts handing out application forms for a prestigious fellowship that comes with a cash reward that lets the winner do research over the next two years. Maggie didn’t get an application form because she is leaving for Cleveland but was paged into Dawn’s office for a favour, which brings us to….

Maggie

Maggie is the first one to get introduced to our new trio as Dawn asks her to give them a tour of the hospital. All the newbies stand in awe when a stop of the tour includes the OR. Maggie is a bit distracted as she prepares for he big move to Cleveland. While Alex will miss Maggie, she plans on visiting her and gives a file filled with stuff they can see in Cleveland such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the world’s largest hand stamp and a building that looks like a picnic basket. As Maggie starts to prepare her life in Ohio like getting her driver’s license, she gets a phone call that tells her the funding for her job fell through so she is now staying at Hope Zion.

Alex tries to get Maggie to fill in the application form for the fellowship but Maggie says it’s too late for her to do so. Alex has to drag Maggie to the fellowship dinner later that evening (see Fellowship Dinner for more).

Zach

Zach’s patient is Angelo, who he doesn’t recognize as one of Hope-Zion’s janitors. Angelo has a really bad elbow that has tons of bone fragments in it. Charlie says he can try and piece the elbow together or he can give him a brand new elbow. Either way though Charlie and Zach recommend that he cannot continue his job as a janitor. However, that is not an option for Angelo.

At first, Zach is a bit aloof with Angelo until he learns that he was poker pals with Joel and that the late Dr. Goren owed him $100 because he passed the LSAT. Clearly, Angelo is a very intelligent mand and dismisses Zach as a rich boy. However, Zach says he comes from a working class family and that his father worked in the steel factory for over 35 years. The two start to bond because they are both from Sault St. Marie and over their friendship with Joel. Later, Zach gives Angelo the money Joel owed him and a bit more that would allow him to start his law school education. Angelo then invites Zach to the Hope-Zion Saturday poker game.

Shahir and Patrick

It seems that Patrick might have a history with one of the newbies as he quickly hides from them when Maggie was giving her tour (see Fellowship Dinner for more).

Patrick’s patient (I am calling him that now instead of Curtis) is Ava who suffers extreme pain when someone touches her face.

Shahir is called in for a consult. Beforehand though, Shahir asks Dawn’s help in determining what’s wrong with his heart as he had a cardiac event during sex with his boyfriend.

Back to Ava. Shahir determines that Ava has some sort of nerve condition that is causing her pain and she has two options: 1) drug therapy that will help ease the pain 2) surgery but it could result in paralysis. Ava opts for surgery because before all of this she was about to move to Paris to be with her boyfriend. The surgery allows Ava’s boyfriend to touch her without her being in pain.

Huse Madhavji as Dr. Shahir Hamza

Huse Madhavji as Dr. Shahir Hamza

During the surgery, Patrick is buttering up to Shahir because he is on the jury of the fellowship. Shahir goes over Patrick’s impressive resume until he questions him about an 18 month gap; Patrick deflects as he wants to concentrate on the surgery.

As Ava is in recovery, Shahir wants Patrick’s help in breaking up with his boyfriend until they are alerted that something is wrong with Ava.

When they get to Ava’s room, her left arm flails uncontrollably while at the same time Shahir’s heart rate is elevated. Shahir manages to stop Ava’s arm from flailing by placing a water bottle in it. Shahir determines the nerve condition was hiding that Ava has multiple scleroris.

Later on, Dawn determines that Shahir is find and that his heart rate went up due to stress. We learn that Shahir’s boyfriend said he loved him but he didn’t respond back. Dawn encourages him to tell his boyfriend how he feels.

Back at Ava’s room, Shahir encourages Ava not to give up on love or her boyfriend because she now has MS.

Alex and Cassie

The episode opens with Luke standing and Alex feels that he is going to take his first steps any moment. Charlie has to pick her up to get her to leave home.

The only thing Alex wants to do is get her work day done so she can go home and see her son take his first few steps. Because of this, Alex is at first a bit rude to her patient Ralph Lively, a colon cancer survivor, suffering from abdominal pain.

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Alex enlists Cassie to assist her on the surgery even though she tried to pass it to Dev. When Ralph meets Cassie, he is taken aback at how young she looks and hopes she doesn’t make a mistake. Cassie determines that Ralph is suffering from gallstones.

While prepping for the surgery, Charlie comes to show Alex video of Luke taking his first steps and she is heart broken that she missed it. But this doesn’t stop Alex from doing her job or teaching Cassie during the surgery. When Alex gets Cassie to do a part of the procedure, things are going ok at first until she nicks something and bile starts to fill the cavity. Cassie is shocked at what she did and leaves the surgery leaving Alex to do a quick stitch to make Ralph stable before taking to Cassie. Cassie admits to being frightened at doing the surgery and Alex said they all had moments like that but she can’t just abandon her patient. With that pep talk, Cassie and Alex goes back into the surgery and finish up.

Later, Cassie visits Ralph to apologize for her error but Ralph is okay with everything because he is going to be okay. Alex checks up on Ralph and apologizes to him for being so distracted to start. Alex admits that she wanted to see her son’s first steps but missed it. Ralph says when he got diagnosed with cancer he was worried about missing the milestones of his three daughters but it’s not about missing milestones but that he will be there for the start of something great and the same will be for Alex.

Cassie over hears that and tells Alex that while she may have missed her son’s first steps, she was there for hers.

Dawn

Throughout the episode, many of the characters note how happy and chipper Dawn seems to be. Shahir notes that Dawn is an amazing woman and wishes that a man would see that too. We see that there is a man that is putting a smile on Dawn’s face as he comes to escort her to the fellowship dinner. This man has no name yet but according to IMDB it’s Lane Berkely and is played by Shaun Benson who I remember from CTV’s The Associates. One thing I am curious to know about Dawn is if she is still the foster mom to Giselle? I hope so.

Fellowship Dinner

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis

Here is what we learned at the fellowship dinner: Shahir has a date with his boyfriend Jonathan later that night, Patrick still won’t say why he has an 18 month gap and he has an obvious history with Cassie who slapped him on the face when he sees him again. I wonder what sort of history they had or have? A romantic one that turned south? A medical school rivalry? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid and Julia Taylor Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin

Max Bennett as Dr. Patrick Curtis and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid and Julia Taylor Ross as Dr. Maggie Lin

And who is up for the fellowship? Two doctors from Hope-Zion that we don’t know, Patrick, Alex and Maggie. Patrick and Alex owe Dawn 50 hours of free overtime for Maggie’s late application.

Later on Alex and Maggie discuss being in competition with each other with both proclaiming they each will win. I have to say that Erica Durance was looking quite beautiful in tonight’s episode.

Charlie

Most of this story tonight is about helping prove Tom’s innocence. In the morgue, using a CPR dummy, Charlie asks Tom to recount what happened the night Amy died. Tom recounts coming home and finding her in the bathtub and trying to pull her out and give her CPR. Charlie mentions that Amy had a skull fracture that Tom explains was a result of him putting Amy down roughly on the bathroom floor.

To show how Canadian this show is, Tom talks about using his ghost abilities to sneak into a Toronto Maple Leaf game. When Charlie says he shouldn’t waste that gift on the Leafs, Tom said better them than the Oilers and talks about 1988, the year Gretzky got traded. That conversation has no bearing on proving his innocence.

Tom’s story about how Amy got her skull fracture doesn’t add up to Charlie. Tom admits that he shook Amy because he was angry at her. Tom says he spent half his marriage on suicide watch and when he goes out for an hour, he comes home to his wife drowned. Despite his anger, Tom says he loved his wife. It seems unclear that Charlie will continue to help Tom or not.

Since Travis Milne’s arc is almost over, I have a feeling that Charlie will prove is innocence and Tom will wake up from his coma and be set free.

Since I am Canadian, wishing all my recap readers a Happy Thanksgiving and see you next week!

Saving Hope Spoilers: Images and Description for “Miss You”

CTV has released images and description of Saving Hope’s 4th episode of season 4. Thrown in are some behind the scenes photos showing the crew prep a mannequin to look like a burn victim patient that we see in later images. The images also show us a bit more of Dawn’s new love and what perhaps is Charlie telling Alex that he can see Tom’s spirit.

Here is the description for “Miss You”

Worried about the lack of family in her baby Luke’s life, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) gets more than she bargained for when Kyle Sawyer (Yani Gellman, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS), the man responsible for her deceased brother’s drug problem, is admitted to Hope Zion Hospital with a life or death stomach complication. Unable to be objective, Alex quickly gives away the surgery, but when a second surgeon is required for the operation Alex must struggle to save the life of the man who ruined her brother’s. Meanwhile, when Elizabeth Grant (Charlotte Sullivan, ROOKIE BLUE), the victim of a horrific acid attack, is rushed to surgery, Dr. Cassie Williams (Kim Shaw, THE GOOD WIFE) struggles to remain objective, putting the life of her patient at risk. It’s up to Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) to teach the young surgeon to put aside her own feelings and focus on the medicine in order to save their patient’s life. In the E.R., Dr. Zach Miller (Benjamin Ayres) must get a patient suffering from self-imposed psycho-paralysis to confront her past to regain the use of her legs.

It’s too bad that it sounds like Charlotte Sullivan won’t be sharing any scenes with Erica Durance and it’s probably deliberate. If you are a Smallville fan, like I am, then you will know that Sullivan appeared in a season 8 episode (“Instinct”) as Maxima was jealous because Lois broke her hold on Clark. The two memorably had a fight that involved the B word before Clark stopped Maxima from really hurting Lois.

“Miss You” airs Thursday October 15, 2015 on CTV at 9pm ET/PT.

In tonight’s Saving Hope, we see a vulnerable Dawn, an old face from Alex’s past shows up at Hope-Zion, Charlie is dealing with two Rookie Blue spirits, Cassie takes things too personally and isn’t baby Luke like the cutest baby ever on TV.

Dawn

Shaun Benson as Lane and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Shaun Benson as Lane and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Lane, Dawn’s boyfriend, pays her a visit to not only give her a breakfast smoothie but also a beautiful diamond necklace. Dawn is overwhelmed with the gift and breaks her no PDA rule at work to give Lane a hug and a kiss. The two then make plans for lunch. When Lane comes for their lunch date, he sees that Dawn isn’t wearing the necklace and wonders why. Dawn says it isn’t practical for her to wear it as she always has to take it off when scrubbing for a surgery so she fear losing it. Lane looks a bit upset but passes it off as a joke. When Dawn is ready to leave for lunch, Lane suddenly remembers he has an emergency meeting so can longer make lunch and asks for a rain check. Later, Lane comes back with umbrella in hand doing a little Singin’ in the Rain dance asking for his rain check. Lane realizes it’s cheesy but Dawn loved the gesture and admits to being afraid of where their relationship is leading. Lane is understanding and it seems their relationship is back on track. I am really hoping that Lane isn’t abusive because this guy seems too good to be true.

Zach

Coming into the ER is Anita, a young woman in a chicken costume. Anita complains of numbness in her leg but doesn’t want to stay because she is the designated driver for an anniversary party.

However, Anita soon has no feelings in her legs and freaks out. Shahir consults and determines that Anita has conversion syndrome, meaning that Anita’s paralysis is all in her head. Shahir wants Jackson and Zach to let her remain in the ER and appear to be treating her so they can get to the root of her problem. Zach and Jackson don’t want to take up an ER bed but decide to help. Jackson and Zach remember Anita mentioning a friend of hers, Samantha Smits, was treated in the ER. Jackson and Zach find out that Samantha was killed by a drunk driver, one year ago today.

Zach goes to talk to Anita who opens up about not being able to pick up Samantha and blames herself and seeks her family’s forgiveness. Zach tells Anita that it is not her fault and should not blame herself for what happened to Samantha.

As Anita leaves, Zach tells her that he can relate about losing a friend and tells her about Joel.

Dana and Cassie

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams and Wendy Crewson as Dana Kinney

Kim Shaw as Cassie Williams and Wendy Crewson as Dana Kinney

Dana’s patient is Elizabeth Grant (Charlotte Sullivan), who has come in when someone threw acid on her face. Charlie is assisting Dana on repairing Elizabeth’s arm and saving the other burned arm. Cassie comes in late to the surgery and is tasked to remove the burned skin. However, Cassie is having a hard time concentrating as she is taking the case very personally. When Elizabeth’s heart rate increases, Dana sees that there is no pulse in her burned arm and they need to do something or she will lose it.

While working to save Elizabeth’s arm, Cassie is having a hard time doing a procedure. Dana says that she needs to stop thinking about the patient or she won’t be able to do her job. Cassie makes a remark that someone has to think of the patient, something Dana doesn’t take too kindly.

When a police officer asks about Elizabeth and wanting to be kept informed, Cassie tells the cop that she hopes they catch the bastard that did that to Elizabeth. Dana pulls Cassie aside tells her she can’t get emotional over every patient. Cassie admits that one of the reasons she is taking this so personally is that her sister dated a bastard. I am thinking that this must be Curtis but who knows.

Elizabeth condition gets worse as she starts to crash and is septic. Dana and Cassie manage to stablelize Elizabeth. With Elizabeth’s parents on their way, Dana asks Cassie what would she say to her parents. Dana then asks how long Cassie’s sister dated that bastard and Cassie says too long. Dana then advises the young doctor to move on and look to the future. We later see Dana and Cassie talking to Elizabeth’s parents.

Charlie

Travis Milne as Tom Crenshaw

Travis Milne as Tom Crenshaw

Tom tells Charlie his spirit will be going back in his body. The two bond over being orphans from the Prairies at a young age. Tom is happy to have Charlie in his corner.

While Charlie doesn’t indicate that it’s Tom’s spirit he is seeing, he does tell Alex that he is seeing ghost when their conversation is interrupted by Tom’s presence.

Tom isn’t the only spirit haunting Charlie. Elizabeth is too and blames herself to what happened and disappears.

When trying to find Elizabeth, Charlie finds Tom instead who tells him where to find her and that she remind him of his friend Marina Pitts, back during his days in Hay River, Alberta.

In the morgue, Elizabeth is a therapist and was working with a really violent client, named Jake, and should have known that this would have happened. Elizabeth wants to know how badly burned her face is. When Elizabeth sees this, she gets upset and Charlie says they will do what they can to restore her face. Despite her better judgement, Elizabeth admits to being in love with Jake.

Charlotte Sullivan as Elizabeth Grant and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

Charlotte Sullivan as Elizabeth Grant and Michael Shanks as Charlie Harris

When things were going south for Elizabeth, Charlie talks to her but ends up sounding trite. When asked what Elizabeth would tell herself, she said she would wait till she was ready to talk. We later see Elizabeth tell Charlie that she is ready.

Charlie has managed to find out Tom’s friend Marina. Unfortunately, Marina has been dead for 15 years and was killed in a similar way that Tom’s wife was killed. Charlie realizes that Tom is really guilty and says that he will rot in prison once he wakes up. Tom isn’t happy and all of a sudden the lights in the morgue and basement goes off. Tom’s voice also goes deep in an evil way and tells Charlie that he won’t forget what Charlie has done to him. Charlie says that Tom will but once he wakes up, he gives Charlie such an evil glare. Let’s see if Tom truly remembers his time in the spirit world and if this will bite Charlie in the butt. If so, I hope that Alex and baby Luke aren’t in any danger.

Alex

The episode begins with Alex showing a photo album she made for Luke. It is only filled with pictures of the three of them as they have no immediate or extended family to speak of. Alex is reluctant to tell her son about how his grandpa committed suicide, his uncle plunged to his death and his grandma is a drunk.

Alex’s patient is Kyle, the man that got her brother Luke hooked on drugs. Kyle has come to Hope Zion to see Alex because he is sick as he starts coughing up blood.

Alex pawns Kyle off to Patrick because she cannot keep her personal feelings out of it. But when Alex takes a look at Kyle’s file, she sees that he has a tumor in his stomach and the surgery required is something she has done before.

Patrick takes Alex to see Kyle’s wife Maya. Alex learns that Kyle has a son named Lucas, that Luke told Maya how he blamed her husband for his drug problems and that Luke became Kyle’s sponsor. Maya hopes that Alex will see Kyle after he comes out of surgery; Alex is hesitant to say yes.

Dr. Mirani tells Alex that Patrick got pulled out of the surgery for an emergency in the ER. So Alex performs the surgery and once in sees that the tumor has attached to everything. Dr. Mirani wants to close up so Kyle can spend his remaining days with his family. But Alex is determined to save her little brother’s best friend as that’s what he would have wanted.

In ICU, Alex visits Kyle and shares that she too named her son Luke. Alex has forgiven Kyle and he mentions that the Reids all have a big heart. Kyle thanks her and her family for saving him and how her mom really saved him from the hell that was his life. Maya and her son Lucas pay and visit and three share a nice family moment.

Back at home, Alex is showing baby Luke family photos of herself and Luke when they were kids. Alex notices that there are not pictures of her mom so she calls her to ask for one. While on the phone, Alex puts her on with her grandson.

And this baby the show got to play baby Luke is absolutely adorable.

A quick note, I am away on business next week so I won’t be able to watch this episode until Sunday October 25.

With that out of the way, that was quite an episode.

Zach and Dr. Dev Sekara

This week, we get to now more about the cute Dr. Dev Sekara who was assigned ER duties, along with Cassie. AFter the first patient that comes into the ER dies (see Charlie and Dawn), Zach vows to the two newbies that no one else dies in the ER this day (which happens to be the anniversary of Joel’s death). Dev’s next patient is Doug, who has come in with abdominal pain and concussion like symptoms. Doug’s imaging results all come up negative and Dev just wants to discharge him with some ibuprophen and on to the next patient. However, Zach wants Dev to put Doug through the concussion protocols. Dev does a half-ass job and sees nothing wrong. Later, Dev officially discharges Doug. As Zach celebrates that they went through the day killing no one, Doug comes back in the ER dead. Zach tells Dev it wasn’t his fault and has to forget about this death. However, in the doctor’s on call room, we see that Cassie consoling Dev.

We start the episode with Alex and Charlie celebrating baby Luke’s first birthday. At Hope-Zion, Alex is reflecting with Zach that this day is also the day Joel died.

Tara Spencer-Nairn as Janice Fenn and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Tara Spencer-Nairn as Janice Fenn and Erica Durance as Alex Reid

Alex’s patient in this episode is Taylor a motorcross rider. Taylor came in after an accident but during surgery to repair some internal bleeding, Alex discovers that Taylor has Leukemia. Unfortunately, Taylor’s mom, Nancy isn’t a match. This news forces Nancy to tell Alex that she isn’t Taylor’s mom but her sister Janice is. The problem is Janice is a junkie. Nancy reluctantly brings Janice in who agrees to be tested to see if she is a match and vows that she is clean. However, during testing, Alex sees that Janice is still using. The good news is that Janice is a match and vows to get clean so she can be a donor. Nancy relents to allow Janice to meet Taylor but cannot reveal their true relationship as it could set Taylor’s recovery back. Janice meets Taylor as a family friend and we see the three ladies just relaxing and talking at episode’s end.

Charlie and Dawn

Their two cases are related in this episode. The patient that dies in the ER is Brynn, who killed herself via self-inflicted gun shot wound. Brynn’s spirit visits Charlie because her father refuses to let her go.

Shaun Benson as Lane and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Shaun Benson as Lane and Michelle Nolden as Dawn Bell

Meanwhile with Dawn, she is going to be doing a heart transplant, which her boyfriend Lane wants to observe. Dawn doesn’t think it is a good idea and but relents. During the surgery, Dawn introduces Lane as a member of the board (which he really is) and he introduces himself as her boyfriend. When Dawn removes the heart, Lane collapses and Maggie has to stitch up an embarrassed Lane’s nose. When the heart that Dawn received ended up being a dud, she and Lane get into an argument where their relationship is on shaky ground.

Because the heart was a dud, Dawn is hoping to have Brynn’s heart since she is a match for her patient. When Charlie approaches Brynne’s dad to get him to agree to donate her organs, he shuts him down. Brynn tells Charlie that she killed her self because her father has been sexually abusing her since she was 8 and has kept it to herself all these years and she just wanted to escape the pain. Charlie uses a story about being a father and how all father’s don’t want to fail their chlid to get Brynn’s father to sign the organ donation form.

Dawn gets Brynn’s heart and it is successful and Brynn’s spirit disappears.

Charlie then goes to Brynn’s father and tells him that he knows what he did to his daughter and cannot hurt her anymore.

After the surgery, Dawn goes back to her office to find Lane waiting for her. It looks like the two are patching things up and are about to have a sexy hookup in her office but it turns south real quick as Lane gets too aggressive and rapes Dawn. In the aftermath, we see a shaky Dawn looking for a needle and thread to sew up her skirt that Lane ripped. At first Dawn’s hands are all shaky but she manages to calm her nerve and it looks like the cold Dawn is back.

I am wondering if Dawn will say anything or keep this to herself. I hope that she does open up to someone about this and just when you thought that Lane would be a good guy. Also, I hope that effectively ends their relationship, I would hate for him to still be in her life.

In this week’s Saving Hope, we see the aftermath of Dawn’s rape, Maggie butts heads with Dev, we learn the truth about Cassie’s past with Patrick, Dana has a pretty cool surgery and Alex decides to use Charlie’s gift to help save her patient.

Dawn

Benjamin Ayers as Dr. Zach Miller and Michelle Nolden as Dr. Dawn Bell

Benjamin Ayers as Dr. Zach Miller and Michelle Nolden as Dr. Dawn Bell

Dawn comes to her office and finds Mrs. Grace, a board member, worried that the rest of the board might shut down the pediatric cancer wing that she is so passionate about. Dawn says that together they will ensure the project will go through. Their conversation is interrupted by an assistance who has flowers from Lane. At the board meeting, everything seems good between Lane and Dawn despite what he did to her. But after the board meeting, where the project went through, Dawn’s happy facade was all a show. Dawn yells at Lane to never touch her again after what he has done but he play ignorant but this only further pisses her off and yells at Lane to stay away from her.

Later at the ER, Dawn starts having a panic attack where Zach treats her. Zach tries to get Dawn to talk but she doesn’t to. To help keep her mind off her troubles, Zach starts to complain about the state of his ER to Dawn and all the horrible equipment he has to deal with. This manages to put a smile back on Dawn’s face.

Dawn then decides to take a few days off.

Maggie

Maggie is playing mentor to Dev where Alex advises her not to kiss her student (a joke referencing her romantic encounters with Kalfas and Katz). Their patient is General Ann-Marie Walsh, who is 8 months pregnant but complaining of abdominal pain. Maggie finds a mass on her ovaries but says it is nothing to be concerned about and they will simply remove it 6 weeks after Ann-Marie gives birth. However, Dev mentions that it could be malignant and this gets Ann-Marie to panic as her aunt died from ovarian cancer.

Maggie isn’t happy at Dev for telling Ann-Marie this but Dev defends himself saying that she had the right to know. Dev further puts himself in hot water by suggesting that if Ann-Marie gets a C-section then they can remove the mass at the same time rather than waiting for 6 weeks.

It seems that we don’t to wait long for Ann-Marie to deliver her baby as her water breaks. Ann-Marie insists on a C-section but Maggie says there is medically no need for one but Ann-Marie is quite insistent.

But what convinces Ann-Marie to have a natural birth is Dev coming in with an iPad so she can Facetime with her husband Marco, who has been deployed. Marco convinces Ann-Marie for a natural birth and she delivers a healthy baby girl, a month early.

Afterwards, Dev wants to assist Maggie on the eventual surgery to remove the mass and she tells him that she will see what she can do.

Maggie then sees Dawn about her surgical assignments. Maggie tells Dawn that she is a more experienced surgeon and doesn’t know why she is assisting on surgeries with those with less. Dawn agrees that she can swap on one particular surgery but Maggie wants it to be all surgeries going forward. Dawn seems to admire Maggie’s resolve and tells her she will let Shahir (who will interim chief while she is away) know.

Dana and Cassie

Kim Shaw as Dr. Cassie Williams

Kim Shaw as Dr. Cassie Williams

Dana and Cassie’s patient is Eddie, a gambling addict who had his ear cut off because of debts owed. Eddie saved his ear but Dana says it isn’t savable. So Dana explains the surgery she wants to do: Dana will take the cartilage part of his ribs to form an ear, place the newly formed ear under his forearm to do its thing, and then three weeks later take the ear out and re-attach it to his head.

Eddie doesn’t feel he deserves a new ear but is convinced to do the surgery. During the surgery, Cassie doesn’t understand why Dana is doing this surgery as she feels that Eddie is just going to keep on gambling and probably lose his other ear. Dana realizes that Cassie’s ex was a gambling addict.

Once out of surgery, Eddie too worries about wasting his second chance. Dana suggests a treatment facility but Eddie says he tried one in Sudbury but it didn’t take. Dana says that Eddie can try again and can recommend a doctor in Northern Ontario to the re-attachment surgery. Eddie can’t leave Toronto because of his son but Cassie says that getting help will help him be with his sone. Combined with her speech and one Dana gives about her fighting her cancer, convinces Eddie to get the help he needs.

Later on in Dana’s office, we see her wince in pain when Cassie comes to see her. Cassie tells Dana that Eddie went off okay when they are interrupted by a text saying Dr. Patrick Curtis has left Hope-Zion for a position in Dublin.

Cassie mutters that Patrick didn’t say good-bye and this is were we learned that the two met at Oxford and were once engaged Patrick apparently gambled away Cassie’s last year of tuition that forced her to come home and she almost didn’t become a doctor because of him. Cassie tells Dana there is no job in Dublin and him leaving like that is part of his MO. Cassie asks Dana not to tell anyone. Dana agrees as along as Cassie doesn’t tell anyone her cancer is back.

At the doctor’s lounge, Cassie goes to see Dev and it is clear that there is something going on between them. Dev sees that Cassie is upset about Patrick and gets a bit frustrated that she won’t open up. Cassie wants Dev to be understanding but understands if he walks away. Dev doesn’t and instead takes Cassie to the baby he delivered.

Charlie and Alex

Alex is with Asha but before she can mentor her, she is called away on a consult. But, really this consult was a way for Charlie to get some alone time with Alex. However, their hospital PDA is interrupted by Nurse Alice (Allison Wilson-Forbes) who gives Charlie a file from Tom Crenshaw about his appeal.

Both Charlie and Alex are paged to the ER to treat Nick who has a pretty nasty leg injury that turn serious. When asked if they should call someone, Nick says there is no one and that he is all by himsel.

In surgery, Nick’s spirit visits Charlie and when he cleans up his leg, he and Alex step out to scrub up for the real surgery. While scrubbing up, Alex wants to know what Tom Crenshaw’s lawyer wants with Charlie. Charlie explains how Tom’s spirit wanted his help to clear his name but then realized he was being played. Alex thinks the two need to come up with a code when talking about spirits and says they should say doing taxes. During the surgery, Alex talks about taxes and how Charlie does a lot to please them. The anesthesiologist thinks they are talking about sex and puts his head phones on.

While Nick is in recovery, Charlie learns that Nick has a identical twin brother. We see that Nick doesn’t talk to his family. All of a sudden, Nick starts to feel pain on his side that progressively gets worse. Charlie brings in Alex who can’t seem to see what is wrong. Alex learns from Nick via Charlie about where he feeling pain. Alex determines that it has something to do with his kidneys.

Shawn Roberts as Nick Desmond

While scrubbing up, Asha wants to know how Alex knows it is Nick’s kidneys. Alex gives some convincing answers but when they go into surgery, Nick’s creatine levels don’t watch what they are seeing of his kidney’s. Alex wants Charlie paged but Asha doesn’t understand why as it is not a bones issue. Charlie and Nick enter the OR and once Charlie mentions Nick’s identical twin, does Alex realize that he got a kidney transplant as a child.

Parveen Kaur as Dr. Asha Mirani and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Parveen Kaur as Dr. Asha Mirani and Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid

Alex manages to save Nick’s life and Asha is wondering how Alex knew all of this that was present in his chart. Again, Alex has convincing answers.

Later, as Alex is writing up her charts, she asks Charlie what does he do. Charlie says he writes as little as possible. Alex then finds Asha pouring over books about the surgery trying to figure out how Alex knew what she knew. Alex says it is just instincts, something that Asha will learn to hone. Alex also tells Asha that sometimes there are things that just can’t be explained but she disagrees.

Back at home, Alex tells Charlie that she doesn’t know how he does it, the lying. Charlie says that it is something that he has learned to live with. Alex realizes that while she wants to be supportive of Charlie’s gift, she can’t do that anymore. Charlie is back to doing his own “taxes” and while the two go to bed, I am not 100% sure what to make of this scene as Alex turns to her own side and Charlie just lies on his back.

Alex knows Charlie’s gift but wants no part of that side of him. Can they still share a life? Was that the significance of that scene that perhaps not? What do you all think?
